i dont knoe why hybrid cars havent been advised to be purchased to buy instead of gas or electric..I mean wouldnt they benefit both electric makers and combustible engine manufacturerers..seems like a common sense way to leave less of a carbon footprint and be greener..maybe im being OBTUSE...

you seem to totally overestimate the advantages of hybrids. A really un green option.

no i get it. hybrids use gas and electric. i know the pollution problems with the gasoline side and the battery part is not cheapvor environmentally clean BUT they sure get good gas mileage..at least the one I rented for 11 days.. I only filled up ! time in 11 days ..It just seems a better option than gas only cars or electric only..And now with expensive gasoline why not buy a Hybrid, if one is looking to buy a vehicle..

Update: $6.09 in Reno, Nv. for regular. Diesel about .10 cents more. LOL...our county gas tax is going up $1,89 beginning July 1. Voters approved the hike back in 2008.

As I understand things, hybrids are best suited for short-haul drives and what the EPA calls 'city' driving. The systems onboard keep the gas engine running until the batteries are fully charged, and then the electric system takes over. The gas kicks in when you need extra power, like when the blue lights come on, or when the battery charge starts getting low.

This keeps the gas engine operating optimally and in the best power band, whilst the electrical system does all the optimizing, including regenerative braking.

Since I don't commute anymore, and live out in the country, I have passed on considering hybrids.

Hybrids can still get 50+ mpg on the highway which is better than any other gas car I've heard of. They get worse mileage in colder weather, and at faster speeds above 65 mph. If you're driving desert roads at 100 mph where the speed limit is 85 mph, the gas mileage will go down. The number one maintenance issue is keeping the fan filter for the HV battery clean. Be sure to run the air conditioner if it's 100 degrees out.

Nevada currently has the distinction as the most expensive gas in the nation, compared to average income.

I still think Nevada incomes figures are horribly biased. In Nevada a high proportion of workers are tipped employees and most of those tips are not accounted for.

$4.99 in Western PA, although this report may be somewhat time delayed for security reasons.

Gas in Reno now around $5.79 for regular. The local gas tax hike was 2 cents. I still think gas needs to be higher, way too many cars on the road. Get the people who have no business owning a car off the roads. Teenagers doing burnouts, racing, etc just means gas is still too cheap.

I'm sure everyone has seen drivers who turn off their engines at stoplights

on the web there is a great deal of discussion about this mostly leaning towards - yes - it is a good idea to do this

I have not done this but I may start doing it

according to the link - the environmental defense fund - which may be biased - you will save lot by doing this

from the edf article:

" Frequent restarts are no longer hard on a car's engine and battery. The added wear (which amounts to no more than $10 a year) is much less costly than the cost of wasted fuel (which can add up to $70-650 a year, depending on fuel prices, idling habits and vehicle type). Idling actually increases overall engine wear by causing the car to operate for longer than necessary."

In case you're among the crowd with older cars where frequent starts are still hard on the equipment (or is undesirable because the air conditioning cuts out), I have heard that shifting an automatic transmission to neutral at stoplights can provide some modest benefit.

That’s fine and great until I have to sit idling through 2 red lights now because the people ahead of me took too long to start up and proceed through the light!

I've had to upgrade to premium gas (93 octane) and it's got a wide spread of price in my area. But my last fill up was $4.37/gallon. I'm getting 27 to 33 mpg now so a tank can get me up to 450 miles if the pumps go dead for awhile. I hear gas could skyrocket in price soon with the Red Sea situation. Cargo ships are already charging 4X more for shipping than a couple weeks ago.
