I have to admit that I am horrible at recognizing "celebrities" on the street. For some reason, they just don't register as "special" with me, and I would just as soon step on their toe as ask them for an autograph.

Outside of being in the audience at a show/concert/event, what famous folks have you seen in Las Vegas? Please code your encounter:

"S" - Saw from a distance
"T" - Talked
"P" - Photo With
"A" - Autograph
"O" - Other

I did recognize basketball legend, "Dr. J." - Julius Erving playing slots at the MGM (before it became Bally's). He was hard to miss since his head stuck out above the machine even though he was sitting down. (S)

I also saw James Doohan ("Scotty" from Star Trek) at the Hilton playing slots on the opening night of the Star Trek Experience. I don't think this really counts as random since he was there for the grand opening. I have to admit that I probably would not have recognized him if I wasn't keyed to look for Star Trek cast members. (S)

I shot craps with Alyssa Milano(T) at the Sahara back in 2002. Actually tried hitting on her, but was soundly rebuffed. I also played BJ with Abe Laborial, Jr (T) at the MGM Grand in 2002 while there to see the 2 Paul McCartney concerts in April of that year. Ole Abe is his drummer.

When I was a bartender in Santa Barbara in the 80's, one evening a drunk Englishman, in an expensive silk suit with no tie, came in with a drop dead gorgeous blond on his arm. I didn't usually serve people who were that drunk, but this guy was so overwhelmingly 'cool', I gave him his double Dewar's on the rocks. He started playing pool and one of the customers said to me, 'Hey, that guy is Joe Cocker', and it was. He had a few more drinks in the next half hour, and completely passed out cold on the floor. His blond girlfriend had us carry him out by the arms and legs and put him in the back of a new red pickup truck. This happened all the time, apparently, there was a mattress in the bed of the truck. There was one of his songs on the jukebox and somebody played it, and Cocker sang right along with it as he played pool, in a voice that was exactly like what was on the record. There was a big crowd in there by that time and everybody was thrilled. If he drank like that all the time, its a wonder he's still alive today..

I've met Dave Foley, but didn't know who he was, so asked him "who are you, and why does everyone know you?" thinking he was one of my friends/friends. He laughed and said "I was on TV" and carried on chatting to us about the hockey game we'd just seen.

I've also be at a wedding with Bob Hoskins (and a cast member of The Bill). Nice guy, big ears, can't dance very well.

That's about as celebrity as I can think off worth mentioning. I'd never approach a celeb just cos they are a celeb... even if I liked what they did. I don't want to know they have feet of clay. I used to see someone worth mentioning about once a month when I worked in Central London.

EDIT : I missed the point, didn't I?

Earlier this year a group of ~ 30 of us on a junket to Harrah's Resorts were waiting in the terminal of the airport where private aircraft take off from. All of a sudden some really tall guy walks by and I say to the guy next to me "That's Magic Johnson." I was going to leave him alone but a couple others in the group recognized him and asked him for his autograph. Planes were grounded because of a storm and he stood there and talked to us until they lifted the ground stop. (T)

I have seen numerous celebrities over the years staying at Caesars. Not being much of a celebrity watcher I never bothered them for autograph or chit chat since I feel they deserve their space. Besides I usually couldn't remember their name anyway only that I had seen them on TV or the movies.

The most memorable time was sitting in the small bar in Caesars that overlooks the main pit. It was relatively empty when we sat down for a drink when Daryl Strawberry, Reggie Jackson and many other ball players grabbed all the remaining tables in the bar. We sat beside them for about 1/2 hour and listened to the banter before leaving. It was the week after the world series and they talked to many other players that wandered past the bar. I am not much of a baseball fan and can't remember any of the other names. We talked to the bar tender the next day and he named most of them.

America's greatest hero OJ Simpson. At Mccarran the day after he made bail for his Kidnap thing. I was noticing that the terminal was filled with TSA and cops. I was watching to see what all the cops were for when I almost walked in to him. All I could muster was "Cool". Figured he was not in the mood to chat.

Not exactly "greatness," but one night back in 03, I was at Mirage playing cards (god bless Rounders) and ended up hanging out with the guy who played one of the kids on "Adventures in Babysitting." Good guy, his buddy was just a normal guy, we ended up hanging out at Fontana until his buddy threw up!

OK, it's not gambling, and it's not Vegas. Nevertheless,

My FAVORITE rock & roll song of all time is "96 Tears". I was 12 in '66. When I first heard that greasy farfisa riff I was completely and totally hooked; I would hold the transistor radio up to my ear way past midnight just to hear it once more before falling asleep. (Remember those radios, with the 9 volt battery? Mine was red.) To this day, that song just hits me right in the pleasure center of my brain.

Fast forward 20 years, it's 1986. Me & my girlfriend Sue are going to The Decade, the heart of rock and roll in Pittsburgh, to see Joe "King" Carrasco & The Crowns. And on keyboards for The Crowns is Rudy Martinez... aka "?" of ? and the Mysterians, AND THE WRITER OF "96 TEARS".

And of course, they killed, and they end their set with "96 Tears", and everyone goes wild. The Decade is a small club, holds a couple hundred. So after the show is over, I go up to Rudy, and introduce myself to him, and tell him how I've dug his music for the last 20 years, and he's a really nice guy and he sits at the table with me and Sue and we buy him a couple drinks and talk music.

I got to buy a drink for the guy who wrote my favorite song of all time, and thank him personally. For me, it doesn't get any better than that.

Fame? One reason I avoid the Palms is to avoid Hollywood starlets or sports figures with entourages and publicity-agent fomented "parties". Oh, don't get me wrong, I know there is a difference between running up and down carrying a football and running up and down dribbling a basketball, its just that I sometimes get confused as to just what the difference is and as to whether anyone should care about it.

About 20 years ago, I saw Tony Randall on the streets of New York City, at a sidewalk flea market type thing.

--

In 1978, a few months before the first casino would open in Atlantic City, Governor Byrne was speaking at the college in Northern New Jersey where I was attending. Through a bizarre circumstance, after his speech, I managed to get into an elevator with him and his aides and security. Everyone was quiet, looking at me. I knew they were thinking, "How'd this kid get in this elevator?" Breaking the silence, I asked him if there would be any restrictions on NJ residents or casino employees from gambling. He looked at me like it was the stupidest question he ever heard, but answered, "No."

Either things changed or he simply didn't know. I now know that there are restrictions preventing employees from gambling, but only within their own casino. At any rate, that's the closest I've come to a casino related brush with greatness, until recently when I met the Wiz.
I invented a few casino games. Info: http://www.DaveMillerGaming.com/ ————————————————————————————————————— Superstitions are silly, childish, irrational rituals, born out of fear of the unknown. But how much does it cost to knock on wood? 😁

I went to the Palms once and they were having a playmate reunion. They had a room set up where you could go in and meet former playmates. I met Julie Mcollough. Mike Seavers old girlfriend on growing pains. She was in full playmate outfit. Very attractive but much older.

I was on the line to get through security at the Vegas airport when the quiet little guy in front of me starts unloading necklaces, clocks, rings, etc seemingly all made of solid gold. After getting through the autograph hounds beset on Flava Flave.

I was on my way through the Wynn last August when William Shattner walked right past me. We made eye contact, and for a split second it looked like he thought he recognized me and was about to say something. Or at least that's how I like to remember it.

I also remember as a kid going on a trip to Reno with my brother. We saw a show with Dom Deloise and Charro, and Charro came to our table, put her hands on my shoulders, and gave me her trademark "Coochie Coochie." It's all been downhill from there!

I was shooting craps at Ceasars back the late 90's when i looked up and realized I was surrounded by a half dozen or so VERY large black men... one of whom was Dennis Rodman. I met with George Bush (Sr) in 1996 when he was sailing on a cruise ship I worked on. I also worked with a number of one time and has been comedians on ships and the one who sticks out the most in my mind is Jimmy "J.J." Walker. He's no stick figure any more. He disappointed the crowd to no end when he refused to do his trademark, "Dy-no-MITE!".

That's awesome. One of the first Vegas shows I ever saw was Charo with Jim Nabors (a.k.a. Gomer Pyle). It was great because he was actually a great singer, and she was, and still is, an amazing flamenco guitarist.

I was playing BJ in Vegas a number of years ago and the girl sitting at the table was a dead ringer for Sandra Bullock. I think it was her. I asked her if she was Sandra and she said nope.
I was walking through the MGM when one of the boxers from the title fight brushed past me. I think it was Hector Camacho, but I can't recall for sure. He had a posse of 15 people protecting him.

I've seen Mike Ditka several times at the Four Winds casino, which isn't far from Chicago. People usually leave him alone, but every craps table he plays at immediately fills up so the people can go home and say they played craps with the big guy.

I saw James Woods, the actor, at a flea market in 1995. The sellers who dealt with him said he was rude and incredibly cheap. You hear that a lot about movie stars. Yul Brenner was renowned for mooching off everybody and never picking up a dinner check. He would even bum the cigarettes that eventually killed him.

I haven't seen celebrities in Las Vegas unless it was at their show. We have seen the Miss America candidates wandering around Planet Hollywood on a couple of trips. I am sure one of them became a celebrity by winning the title, but I can't count that because I didn't even remember which ones we had seen by the time the contest was held...

I did play mini-Bac with James Stephens III. He has been on television and maybe in movies, too. He was performing at Coushatta and seemed to enjoy a little gaming after his shows. I saw him the night before we went to the show, chatted with him while playing a bit, and he ended up paying my commission when the dealer had me pay off the wrong spot when I left the table. The dealer was screaming at my wife that I left without paying; she had no clue what was going on (she was just looking for me to get more slot money), and James took care of it for me. I went back, paid him, and thanked him.

I've only met and talked to one celebrity in my life, and that was Dakota Fanning when she was 8. Ran into her in Vancouver in a store that my wife and I were shopping at. At that point in time, "I am Sam" had just premiered. We were going to see the movie that day and she said that she was too! Inadvertently, she profoundly changed my life, but that's another story.

We ran into many PGA pros as they were staying in the same hotel last year with us when they had a tournament. At Vegas, we think we've seen celebrities but we cannot confirm. We haven't played a table game with one.

Several years ago I saw Janet Jackson at the Venetian. She was there for some club opening and they had a red carpet rolled out with loads of people lined up to see her. I didn't really care that much but my friends and I were leaving the casino when she came in. When I saw her about 15 feet away I turned to my friend and said "Is that LaToya?" That was my lame attempt at being funny but a lot of people seemed excited to see her.

I met Teller outside the Penn and Teller show, but that hardly counts because they meet all their fans after the show.

Back in elementary school on a class trip to a recreational area outside of town, we ran into a pro sucker team doing some physical training. I got Hugo Sanchez's autograph (which probably means nothing even to fans of that alleged sport) for my little brother. He never believed it was legitimate and threw it out shortly thereafter.

That same year on another class trip we all got to meet the president of Israel on an official visit. Israel's president is a figure head, though, much like the VP in the US or the extant monarchy in Europe. I don't even remember his name.

I saw John Juanda walking into the high limit section at Bellagio about 3 years ago. He was alone, so I just went up to him, shook his hand, told him I think he's a great player, and good luck in his next tournament! Then I walked away and let him be.

He was kind enough, but I got the vibe that he was a little nervous. Also, he was playing $100 x 5 VP.

In June of 2003 we only had three kids, so we fit into one room at Bellagio. The NBA Player's Association was meeting there while we were there, and we were heading down one day when we heard "hold that elevator!" and in ducked Bill Walton. The boys were too young to know who he was, and my second son asked "Is that man a giant?" and Bill cracked up and he was so very nice and talked on the way downstairs. To this day, when the kids see him on TV they point him out.

I would never bother someone for a picture or autograph unless they were doing publicity, like when we did a Meet and Greet at the Rio pool with the guys from Toad the Wet Sprocket. They were also cool.

I had a friend who used to do the SCUBA tours for Necker Island the private island of Richard Branson in the Virgin islands which rents for $53K/night (up to 28 guests). If you are renting it for a corporate retreat then you are top level executives. If you are renting it for your family, then you are ultra wealthy or a major celebrity.

So her brushes with celebrities often included being in a small boat for 4 hours. She found Bruce Willis and Demi Moore to be very charming. She wanted to drown Richard Dreyfuss. He refused to show his card to prove he was certified SCUBA diver because obviously he had starred in Jaws.

She wanted to drown Richard Dreyfuss. He refused to show his card to prove he was certified SCUBA diver because obviously he had starred in Jaws.

I thought the star of that movie was named Bruce :P

Most of the time I could care less, celebrity just doesn't matter to me that much. Usually when I've seen a famous person, my propriety has prevented me from bothering them. I'm kind of a lone wolf and don't like to be bothered, therefore I don't make a habit of bothering others.

An exception was one of my favorite bands Reel Big Fish, I approached them and hung out with them a few times. Just regular dudes, a lot more laid back than I thought they'd be. At another concert I turned around to locate the source of the reefer I smelled and Senn Dog and B-Real from Cypress Hill were standing right next to me. It was kind of weird cause we were way in the back by ourselves, but anyways we got to hang out with them for a while. Shooks hands too, which, if your counting, means I was one degree of separation from Carmen Electra's vagina ;) Whatever, I was 17 then. It was a big deal hehe.

I saw Sean Connery in NYC in a Dingus Day parade. I yelled out "S-Words for $600 Trebeck!" He didn't reply.

I was invited to play in a Haudenosaunee Hockey Tournament and while watching other games waiting for ours to start, I stepped back onto someone's foot. Turned around and it was former Buffalo Sabres tough guy, Rob Ray. He was cool about it and it began a good hour of conversation. The dude aint that big but he's got hands like sledgehammers. The conversation ended awkwardly once he found out I was a Leafs fan and my favorite player ever is Tie Domi.

And lastly, I've just returned from Vegas 2 days ago where I competed in the Fastest Card Counter in the World contest. There were quite a few people there, and I at one point found myself talking to this one random Asian dude. Just kinda chatting about counting and Blackjack and random nonsense, you know, typical stuff. He tells me he's the honorary time keeper for the contest, and I jokingly offer him $20 to rig the clock for me. The Director of my site says "I see you've met Mike, make sure you get a picture." I'm like, "Mike? He somebody special?" Turns out he was Mike Aponte, one of the members of the MIT Blackjack team the movie '21' was based on. Ha! It was weird though; MIT super brain who did something wild enough to make a movie of, and again, he was just an everyday guy. Real down to earth. I didn't bother him for a pic, either.

In 1980 they were making a movie called 'Cutter and Bone' in Santa Barbara. At the bar I worked at, some of the crew came in several times a week and I got to know them and they said I could be an unpaid extra if I wanted. There were several crowd scenes, most notably a parade in which hundreds of people could be seen. What a boring gig, lots of waiting around. I got to meet Jeff Bridges a couple times and he was very cool, a real down to earth guy. They later changed the movie title to 'Cutters Way' and it pretty much sucked. If I was in any of the shots, it never made it to the screen.
