DELANO, Calif. — A California man attending a cockfight has died after being stabbed in the leg by a bird that had a knife attached to one of its limbs.

The Kern County coroner says 35-year-old Jose Luis Ochoa was declared dead at a hospital about two hours after he suffered the injury in neighboring Tulare County on Jan. 30.

More U.S. news Texas teens killed in Mexico triple homicide
Three teenage boys were shot to death in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, at least two of them U.S. citizens and high school students in Texas, authorities said Monday. Full story

...An autopsy concluded Ochoa died of an accidental "sharp force injury" to his right calf.

Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt says it's unclear if a delay in seeking medical attention contributed to Ochoa's death. Tulare officials are investigating, and no arrests were made at the cockfight.

Cockfighting is a sport, illegal in the United States, in which specially bred roosters are put into a ring and encouraged to fight until one is incapacitated or killed.

"When deputies arrived, people started fleeing," Sgt. Martin King told kget.com in Bakersfield. "One of the roosters jumped at the decedent, inflicting some type of injury and causing his death."

Authorities told kget.com that this is the first time they have seen a human die as the result of a cockfight.

"Number one, the sport is illegal in the state of California," King told the website. "As far as the dangers, this was just an unfortunate freak accident. I really can't compare it to anything or say anything else because that's basically all that it is."

Ask any nurse or doctor how such a person could die, and they will immediately say the chicken got his femoral artery. If you cut your femoral artery, you will lose consciousness instantly and die within minutes. The femoral is the 'jugular' of the lower limbs.

PS: for the calf, a tourniquet will save your life. But cut it in your groin, not sure what you do. Outdoorsmen are cautioned not to try to be cutting things in their lap with a big knife btw.

All rooster use blades, not knives, in cockfights. It's a barbaric diversion, like bullfighting or boxing. I'm surprised one got close enough to a leg to do damage, though.

BTW I thought the femoral artery runs along the thigh, not the calf. Does it run down the whole leg?

I would imagine the number of people killed by knives at cockfights over the years is in the tens of thousands. However, the assailant is rarely one of the combatants.

Which makes me wonder if the rooster was really the killer, or there's something more going on here.
