Seems like every platform will be passkey eventually. I have passkey on my Ipad but not on my desktop.
A couple questions.
Can you get your computer repaired without giving up your passkey?
I see things like verify your identify with camera on monitor. My main desktop monitor doesn't have a camera.. I can add these I suppose, but just automatically assuming someone has one is annoying.
I remember the FBI opened someone's phone by holding it up to the person's face. So, hey if someone is mugged their phone could be opened.
Also will I have to go to a regular phone account. I like using this pay as you go phone and had closed my regular phone service. I don't know for sure if I can maintain the same number if something happened to this phone. And a stable phone number seems to be needed for backup.

One time 5 years ago the fan on my laptop went out and I had to have a relative replace the fan long distance. I took out the hard drives and included a linux bootable flash drive so he could start the machine. I think I'd get Linux 22 Cinnamon now. I'd never leave my hard drive at the repair shop if I could help it, but problems happen. Maybe get a safety hard drive to stick in there and Windows will still install because of the machine key, and don't use a passkey if that's still possible, and don't set up the e-mail client if it does require a PIN same as the old one. If the hard drive is the problem, well, idk. Most of my experience is about reinstalling Windows on installations that went bad; not on switching Windows hard drives in and out.

Using Linux is a good start. But if you want to be really secure get a set of computer tools, the tiny drivers and things you would use on laptops as well as the more standard things you would use on a desktop, so you can do your own repairs. $10 at Harbor Freight will get you all you need.

I tried to take my new laptop apart to check on the status of an available 2nd hard drive spot (2.5" SSD drive) that wasn't documented. I had to cut up some expired credit cards and use them to pry the back off the machine all around from the top of the machine. HP made this horribly. Previously, a decade ago, it was easy-peasy with one screw. Now it's a freakin' horror show trying to get this thing apart.
I need some ribbon connector I've never seen before instead of the connector I had and I also need a better fitting slot holder case. Still not on the documentation. I put the ribbon on my Amazon wishlist until later. I'm still not sure about the drive holder. The drive holder I have fits in OK, backwards with no screws; which is not gonna work with the ribbon.
The first drive is one of those high speed PS5 SSD type sticks.
This 17" laptop is on closeout at Best Buy but the specs are so much lower and the price is around $500. I got a souped up version that suits me for a few hundred dollars more online elsewhere. It's got 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD drive and a 1/2 TB SD card and a dongle that's worth $180 for extra ports. I use it remotely and almost never use the keyboard itself or look at the screen closeup. I treat it like a desktop and leave it plugged in all the time.
