Top 5/10 are drama, and bottom 5/10 are musicals or comedies.

As usual the critical favorites are movies that have not ranked very high at the box office. Current ranking of movies for the year 2010 follow (many will move up):

5 Inception
31 The Social Network
45 Black Swan
53 The Fighter
83 The King's Speech

2 Alice in Wonderland (2010)
34 Red
51 The Tourist
77 Burlesque
113 The Kids Are All Right

I would have chosen True Grit (box office #22) over Black Swan

I don't think that the outcome was a total shock. Barney's Version was in only 4 theaters so no one has seen it, but actors love Paul Giamatti.
What is getting to be typical is that no movie in the top 30 of the year (except Toy Story) won an award in any category.

Animated films that are successful commercially are usually nominated for awards. Only the 4th Shrek film did not get nominated and was instead replaced with a small French film that has only shown in 7 theaters in the USA. But successful live films are rarely nominated, and it is even rarer for them to win.
- Toy Story 3
- Despicable Me
- How to Train Your Dragon
- Tangled
- The Illusionist
