When I first read Mr. Kim's biography, I thought he was a comic book Superhero. It turns out he is one in real life.
Jonny Kim was born in LA of a South Korean immigrant family. His father was a domestic abuser who was shot and killed by police when Kim was nine. Kim was credited with standing up to his drunken father long enough for the police to arrive and save the rest of the family.
He had a rather unremarkable high school career, joining the swim team, but his work at the family store interfered with his practices. He joined the US Navy shortly after graduating. He completed boot camp and was studying to be a Naval Corpsman ( Medic) when he was invited to take a physical fitness test to become a candidate for the Navy Seals. He completed nearly 18 months of extensive training and won a coveted spot as a Seal Corpsman, where he served on over 100 missions.
While in the Seals, he pursued his college education and was in a program to help enlisted men qualify to become Officers.
Upon getting his BA and becoming a Commissioned Officer, he took time out of his Naval career to go to Harvard Medical School, where he graduated, near the top of his class
Upon returning to the Navy and becoming a medical doctor, he set out to become an astronaut. He is currently the Commander on what may be the first manned mission to Mars.
He accomplished all this before he turned forty.

If there ever is a manned mission to Mars. If it does happen the earliest is probably the late 2030s where this guy Kim would be in his mid50s. Chances of them sending somebody that old are pretty slim. Also if they're saying late 2030s, that means it's going to happen far later than that. They've been telling us we would be having walking talking robots to buy any day now for the last 5 years. And they're still telling us that.

I never read his book but I have read a lot about him and have the utmost respect.
You can't know everything, but you can know anything.

His story made the rounds in my social media, but it was usually framed as "Asian mom's dream child."
I didn't know about his abusive father and the subsequent police action. Thanks for that tidbit!
