odiousgambit's thread questioned the validity of the names assigned to collective groups of animals (e.g., "Pride" of lions, etc.), which raises the question, "What are we; this group that gathers on the Wizard's discussion board"? Make suggestions now, since if we don't start it ourselves, we run the risk of it being assigned by the same person who thunk up "Murder" of crows. It there are enough (or any) we can vote later.

I want to reitarate something. The question is not about what to call gamblers, but what to call the particular gamblers who gather in this forum. Now, most of us look to the Wizard for instruction and advice in gambling, therefore we know we play the best games possible. Of course we stray into pair+, fire bets, hard 12s, and other side/sucker bets, but at least we know what we're doing!

That's the optics through which to look and that's why I replied intelligence should be part of the name. I just can't think of an appropriate one.

I won't claim "intelligent" so much as "informed." I can only go to Vegas or AC 3 times a year at best, so I'm still at the mercy of the random variance, or luck. But I do like to know what I'm up against and to practice the games on a simulator in advance and read the advice here and on WoO so that I can see the best way to play a game I enjoy, even if the house edge is never going to be in my favor. It will always be just entertainment for me, but I'm not the type to let ignorance be the thing to beat me up, just the inevitable house edge.

I see people holding the worst stuff when they play video poker, and I keep my mouth shut knowing their bad play is what keeps the pay schedules competitive.

Don't worry, i'm sure there're lots of others "keeping mouth shut" when you act similarly. With the casinos "laughing all the way to the banks", of course.

I hesitate to make this a battle of semantics. So I'll just give you my thoughts on the matter. On my first two trips I had no idea what I was doing, how many gmaes were played or even that there were different paytables on VP. My excuse for the first trip was that I really went to see the sights more than to gamble. For the second trip I have no excuse. I think that being uninformed about gambling is not a smart thing to do if you intend to gamble, therefore an infomred gambler is a smart gambler.

But that's a bit simplistic. after all, you can be ifnomred and still play hunches, or simply say "hell with it, I'm betting this sucker bet for the big payoff." If you play $20 on the pair+ and $5 on the ante when you know what that means for your chances, then you may be infomred but not smart.

So, sure, let's say "informed" gamblers.

Hmm. A Data of Gamers?

A trove of bettors?

Oh, I'll play Triple Double Bonus, which is a horrible game, but I'll only play it for pennies on a 50-play machine to lower the volatility. I like to play it, but I know it's a bad game.

I'm talking about the people playing Deuces Wild and holding a king, like they'd get paid for Jacks or Better, or the lady holding Q7 suited, or the guy holding a pair of 6's, plus an Ace kicker. I'll play a bad game, but I won't play a game badly. I bought Gambling 102 and follow the optimal plays.

Fair enough, but i was referring specifically to those stupid things (on some greater level) which all of us UNKNOWINGLY often do.

The adjective that used to be used for such players was "sharp" or "sharpies". Maybe that could be incorporated somehow.

This is a fun little riff on collective nouns more than a "name the community" anyway, so the above suggestion didn't really fit the bill either.

Using both verb and noun applications of the word, how about a "study of gamers/gamblers/players"? I like the idea that we're (mostly) on this site to learn and improve how we play casino games and that the Grand Poobah Wizard is in no small way tutoring us.
