a cop in an unmarked cruiser deliberately hits a motorcyclist who shot dead a fellow cop
really shocking and brutal
fast forward to 13:19
.
He was a retired Nassau Cop who built up a nice comic-selling business and had a few thousand dollars worth of my books on consignment. After not hearing anything, I called them last night. The good news is they have my books and agreed to ship them to me.
The bad news is my friend had been sent home with a self-defibrillator and was supposed to wear it 24-7, especially when sleeping. The device was found in his car.
He left an ex-wife and two almost-grown sons, a girlfriend, and a three-year-old daughter.

This is the kind of thing; a follow-up care provider should be provided as a standard. You'd naturally expect some will have issues with following important self-care. Considering ...
Quote:Wearable cardioverter-defibrillators (WCDs): These vest-like devices can also deliver a powerful shock that can be painful and may cause burns.
Just like people not staying on medications for various reasons, they can need important follow-ups to make sure they understand or resolve a problem if possible.

I can sympathize with that. I had to wear a medical pump and take O2 while I slept a few years ago. When I got the OK to go off it my mother wanted me to keep it on until the medicine was gone. But enough was enough. Eventually you say the hell with all this.

My only issue with the death of parents/grandparents, is not asking them more questions before they passed. There's everything from medical issues to family history. Some of it is just mere trivia, that I would like to know, but don't need to. And oh yeah, where they buried the gold.

It's going to be Bring Your Gun To The Supermarket Week! Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
If all this happens and the stores hire security guards, their assigned duty is going to be asset protection. Specifically, the company's assets. That does not include your car, your body, or the groceries you just paid for and walked out with. You are on your own out there.
https://www.foxnews.com/us/investigation-continues-hundreds-cremated-human-remains-discovered-recovered-nevada-desert
Kind of an incomplete yet disturbing story, due to its incompleteness. 315 piles, what does that mean? 315 people, 315 dumps? I've never had anything to do with cremated remains but I assume it's like fly ash or cigarette ash and with the winds in the desert it wouldn't remain in a pile for very long. Depending on the details, it sounds like it could involve something much more sinister than a crematorium breaking all the rules.
And whose idea was it to come up with a portmanteau of "cremated remains?" I have that portmanteau! Sounds awful. Just say "cremated remains."

At the grocery stores I go to with armed guards, the security usually focuses on cash and liquid laundry detergent.
Everything else is too cumbersome to steal enough of to cause meaningful shrink. (Yes, everyone knows about the ribeye bananas going through self checkout. You're on high definition video; they're gathering evidence until it qualifies as a felony.)
If it really becomes a problem, expect choke point cameras at the exits, slightly slower automatic doors, and possible LPR cameras in the parking lot.

One of the old scams on self checkout was to obscure or deface the barcode, and enter the lookup for bananas. Even paying for packaging weight, 49 cents a pound is a steal on ribeye.

I can't imagine why someone wouldn't rather have real bananas.
The last time I worked in a store back in the 80s everything was different. Cigarettes and lottery were treated same as cash. But they were always behind the counter, and also because they were age restricted products. On the floor the high theft items were: batteries, film & flash, playing cards, condoms, and transmission fluid.
And recently it struck me: the motivation for theft of all those things is obsolete. In the demographic that steals the only thing they have now with disposable batteries is remote controls and those batteries last a long time. Nobody but serious hobbyists has film cameras anymore. Few people play cards with actual cards anymore. People would steal condoms more out of embarrassment of being seen buying them than a desire to not pay for them, but that's not considered so disgraceful anymore. Transmission fluid was stolen because automatic transmissions used to be controlled by engine vacuum, and when that seal went the transmission fluid got drawn into the intake very quickly and a car with that problem could burn through a gallon of transmission fluid a day. But now transmissions are usually sealed and few people have to think about transmission fluid anymore.
Stealing the laundry detergent, specifically Tide, I don't understand. Nobody needs a lot of it. It's bulky, and if you think it's too expensive you can get some at the dollar store that works too.

OK that illuminates it a little. It's a product that everyone uses more or less, non-perishable, easily recognizable, and there is little concern for style and size like there is with makeup and clothes.
Of all the products in a Walmart that check all of those boxes, what is the most expensive? Probably Tide laundry detergent.

I read that something like 60% of all food stamps are spent at Walmart. With all the threats Walmart says it will close certain stores for curbside pickup only paid in advance. This has infuriated some upstanding members of society who are going to rob Walmart blind. They are now threatening to steal the groceries being loaded into people's cars. They obviously don't realize this is a totally different crime than shoplifting. Fafo.

A lot of formulated infant food is now displayed in a way that makes it slow to take much from the shelf.
Many detergents are packaged with a convenient carrying handle.
Printer ink was stupidly high shrink back when I was in a store that sold it. We eventually had to move it behind the cash counter, and planograms could take a leap.

Neo is a 5'6' 70-pound robot that seems to be a walking Alexa speaker. Integrated into a smart house,it will learn to perform simple tasks as you teach it. It can answer your door, sign for packages, turn lights on and off, patrol the perimeter of your property and alert you to changes, and act as a security alarm. You can teach it to fetch items, put away groceries, and do your laundry. It also comes with washable clothing and shoes, so you don't take it out in public naked.
$200 deposit gets you on the wait list for leasing the bot at $499 a month or you can buy one for $20,000.

There isn't going to be anything we can do about this, and the remedy is for us all to learn to let these things roll off our backs. If somebody makes AI porn of you, so what? They did it, not you, and it is a reflection of the maker's bad character and sick mind, which tells us nothing about you.

you miss the point entirely
our society makes efforts to protect people from harm
our society will try to protect you or help you to some extent from robbers or killers (with police and in other ways)

it is a huge problem

As you have identified what you believe is a problem, you should start looking for a solution. Until AI starts causing people to make death threats, it isn't a priority of mine.
If a person on a website calls me a doody head, what should I do
If someone says they hope my dog gets hit by a car, what should I do?

What does AI have to do with any of it?
Quote: billryanWhat does AI have to do with any of it?

it's greatly upsetting some people, maybe especially females - not you of course - it hasn't happened to me, and is not likely to - but if it did I'm sure it would upset me
I linked this before - here it is again - how this female judge was terrified by it
from the link:
"In the clip, an animated man wearing a red, white and blue face mask can be seen following a woman on the street before he attacks her with a hatchet. After several blows from the weapon, he then draws a gun and shoots her multiple times in the head while onlookers scream in the background.
That video is still difficult to watch, especially thinking about my children that saw that on social media,”
Johnson went on to add that in the full video “he named me. He talked about my divorce, my remarriage, my name change, my children, where I live and where I work. And so it was a very scary time for me and my family.”
She said it took five months before the threat was taken seriously by law enforcement. Ultimately, the man who made the threatening video went to trial in November 2024 and was convicted, receiving the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison."
you could care less about it all - everybody gets that

I totaled my car last week, nobody was injured, and am seeking some advice about replacing my ride.
1. Will CarMax haggle?
2. Is Carvana a good choice to buy from?
3. My car was a 2019 Kia Sorrento, and I really loved the car. Would buying another one (used) or a Hyundai Santa Fe still be a good choice?
4. Would a Toyota Rav 4 be a better choice?
5. With about $30k to spend, what would your preferred choice be (SUV)?
6. Any car shopping advice beyond what is asked here?
My insurance carrier has offered a fair settlement on the ACV of my car.
Lastly, my personal ability to get to a dealership for test drives and other shopping chores is limited as my age has caught up with me.
Thanks for your help.

Carvana seems to be be a good place to buy. I know a few who have and were happy.
I had a Mazda CX5, while my partner had a Rav4. We both preferred the Mazda.
AARP has a program that supposedly will save you money if you buy through a dealer.
It took my insurance many months to pay a claim and they never even sent anybody out for an estimate and refused to accept estimates I got from another garage since the one they told me to go to was booked for months already and could only take pictures not on a lift. I could have gotten a totaled result if they ever showed up or I got an appointment with their garage. But there was a contradiction between the local insurance office saying I could take my car to any garage for an estimate and the national phone line that directed me to only one body shop that couldn't book me. I was ripped off. Their excuse was the car was still drivable. I only got $3,500 instead of the $10K-$15K it would cost to replace the car with a similar old car at a used car place. Car inflation was high at the time, so even if the Blue Book value was only $3,500, used cars were selling for way more than Blue Book value. I did get an extra $500 for a trade-in.
I had a year to shop for new cars after my 2006 car was badly damaged and wasn't going to pass inspection but was still drivable. I test drove a few cars and because of my size I don't fit in 99% of the cars on the market. So I only test drove maybe a dozen cars in a few outings. I could tell you what I bought, but it is so close to being recalled, I can't recommend it to anybody else. I just lucked out on my choice, but the speedometer had to be replaced in the first few months and it has probably destroyed the resale value in this country.
I didn't know much about modern cars, so I had to shop online and learn new info everyday before I went to a car lot with a possible choice. The learning curve was far too steep and I'm glad I had a year to think about it. If you're coming from a 2019 car, you may already know what to look for in a car. It's just the car market has been suffering since COVID started with wild price moves and reduced sales. I went to YouTube and watched hundreds of car lot and car repair videos. I realize you don't have time for all that and probably need something in the next week or two. There's Uber and Lyft which I know not much about except they are pricey.
We’ve had our Outback for 12 years (bought new) with minimal issues.
Possibly you get lucky buying from private individual. Wife and I recently purchased a 2016 Tahoe with 21,000 miles for 31.5k. Granted it was from someone we knew but it was fair book value.
Anyone who was in the military knows why you should not buy a KIA.

Quote: ChumpChangeIt's really hard to recommend a Kia or Hyundai because of the TikTok joyride grand theft auto that has never been addressed. Insurance won't even cover them in some cases, dependent on your neighborhood or parking places. Ford is really hard to recommend because of constant major recalls happening on a daily basis. Getting a foreign car could be problematic because of tariffs and shipping shutdowns. Cars are $50K MSRP now, it went up over 60% since 2019 when it was $30K. A used car with 20K-40K miles could be had for $30K or thereabouts, might need some pocket change to cover the difference from the insurance payout. Some car models are being discontinued.

Sounds like you had multiple bad experiences.
My insurance company had no problem insuring my Kia and was incredibly responsive with the adjustment process giving me a written settlement in 5 days which was quite fair based on the actual cash value of similar vehicles for sale in my area. Tomorrow I go to the salvage yard and sign over my title and should receive a check within 5 days.
I will continue to do research on vehicles available in my area. The internet provides real information in great detail, so shopping is not such a hassle and kinda fun.
Thanks for the reply.

Anyone who was in the military knows why you should not buy a KIA.

The good news for me was that I was not KIA or Killed in Accident, and my car was "TOTALED."

Quote: linksjunkieSubaru Outback and Forrester both very solid vehicles. Should be able to find a descent mileage used one for 30k.
We’ve had our Outback for 12 years (bought new) with minimal issues.
Possibly you get lucky buying from private individual. Wife and I recently purchased a 2016 Tahoe with 21,000 miles for 31.5k. Granted it was from someone we knew but it was fair book value.
