I live near Lake Michigan one of the real Great Lakes. I didn't think Ontario was deep enough to take more than a rowboat and fish actually live in it? Lake Ontario is the last in chain of Great Lakes so all the pollution from the other Lakes end up in Ontario. It has very low nutrient and oxygen levels and that anybody would eat fish out of there is amazing. It's really a sewage pit. I'm surprised you caught anything. That you paid for a boat to do it in is hilarious.

You're thinking of Love Canal.
Love Canal was a neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York, United States, infamous as the location of a 0.28 km² landfill that became the site of an environmental disaster discovered in 1977. Decades of dumping toxic chemicals killed residents and harmed the health of hundreds, often profoundly.

Right... the Superfund cleanup remediation was done 20 or 25 years ago. As I understand, there are still restricted areas.

Love Canal is adjacent to Lake Ontario.

(Dishonorable mention to the Cuyahoga River, which feeds into Lake Erie, which also feeds into Lake Ontario. The Cuyahoga River notably was so contaminated that it caught on fire several times.)

Lake Ontario covers an area roughly the size of New Jersey. It's not exactly small.

I just keep thinking that Michigan & Huron wanted to go out to play with their friend Superior, and Mom said they had to let their kid brothers tag along.

China's robot games - robot athletes competing - imagine what they'll be able to do in 20 years -

from the link:

"advancements in artificial intelligence allow the machines to do a wider range of basic tasks. Five years ago, “it was rare to see a humanoid robot that could reliably walk, let alone run, jump, or handle rough terrain,” he said.

But Professor Fern said the type of robots used in the games are generally not equipped for higher-level functions like planning or reasoning and usually need a human operator to help guide them.

“The robots are still dumb,” he said."

People are dumb. I'm training for an advocate position and part of the training is spending two mornings a week in court so I get familiar with the processes. It's boring as hell 90% of the time, but sometimes you have to restrain from laughing at the stupidity. Somebody watches an internet video and thinks they know the correct order of words to show the judge they are innocent or that the court lacks jurisdiction.

I love the way courts work and I look forward to suing someone in small claims court. It just sounds fun to me.

Having sued someone in small claims court, it isn't fun. Neither is standing in front of a judge as a defendant during an arraignment. Watching as a spectator other people's arraignments is interesting. Jury duty is a whole other kettle of fish.

You can Google earth it and see it closed off. Just a fence. Residences still on either side of where the canal once was.

Back to the Great Lakes in grade school I was told that people were told to stay away from lake Erie in the 50s. By the 70s when I was a kid it was a decent place to go to the beach.

It is amazing how out of hand pollution got in the 50s and 60s. I remember some of the end of it as a kid. These days you rarely see smoke coming from smokestacks at factories.

Nope, I'm not. This is how bad Lake Ontario is.

"People under 50 can eat up to one, one-half pound per month of Lake Ontario salmon."

That's a paltry 8 oz of salmon per month that is safe to eat. Or so they think. I wouldn't go near the stuff probably glows in the dark.

I don't take those warnings about fish or meat in general seriously. When you look at who is making those claims, you will usually find some ulterior motive. Only bivalves require a lot of attention to where you harvest them.

Angling is a good filter for good fish. A fish that is aggressively pursuing prey is healthy. When you fish with a pole and hook you get the most aggressive ones.

Did anyone read about the world record sniper kill in Ukraine? A sniper killed two Russian soldiers at a distance of over 4,000 METERS using laser guided BULLETS and a drone. For me, that is mind blowing and unimaginable. Does this incident actually change warfare, and can this technology put anybody at increased risk of assassination? It is, for me, pretty scary.

This war is changing the way war will be fought in the future. It's scary that a person can now kiss his wife and kids goodbye, drive to the office and spend the day guiding drones to kill dozens and be home for dinner.
I watched the video of the Ukrainian and something seemed off to me. The gun he used is designed to blow holes in walls and is almost certainly against the Geneva Convention to deliberately target a combatant with it.

I read about this back in the 00s. A problem is some of these guys get their own PTSD but nobody was taking it seriously. On one hand the job could be done from an office park. But you go to work every day, EVERY day knowing you are going to kill people, And you have to watch the satellite of the aftermath.

Can someone order a ‘wellness check’ for EvenBob? He confabulates Lake Ontario into Lake Erie. He thinks 800 feet is shallow. Maybe he is suffering from cat scratch fever?

I plan on eating some of the salmon, and certainly sharing some with the friend who will be smoking it. He is a real fisherman with his own small fishing boat. He fishes on Lake Erie and caught 6 walleye this morning. He eats them and seems pretty healthy. He’s the guy who forages for mushrooms.

They should say what kind of plague, but I have to think they mean bubonic plague.

That it still exists and now never becomes epidemic is interesting to me. I think it may mean people back in the day were unbelievable pigs. It could also mean that a mutation is necessary for an epidemic

You can see what I crossed out ... I didn't think there were epidemics anymore . Duh.

Quote: various bots

people infected with bubonic plague today can survive with prompt and effective treatment, typically with antibiotics. While the mortality rate for bubonic plague is around 11% with treatment, it can be much higher without. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for a positive outcome ...

The bubonic plague still occurs today and can sometimes reach epidemic stages, primarily in certain parts of the world,
.
Here's a breakdown:

Endemic Regions: Plague is endemic (meaning it exists permanently) in specific areas, with the majority of human cases since the 1990s occurring in Africa.
Leading Countries: The three most endemic countries are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, and Peru.

(¡¡snip!!)

They do mention the contagion (Yersenia pestis), but I believe the "type" of plague depends on where the infection localizes.

In the wild animal world, it would just be a natural way of population control, along with occasional food shortages and other forms of depopulation.

A blight supposedly killed all the US chestnut trees, except they found a small cluster years later.

Of course, there's the Dodo. The number of passenger pigeons overflying the US was once described as so thick they could blacken the sky. Humans: masters of extinction.

Quote:

he last known passenger pigeon, named Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914, according to the National Museum of Natural History. Once the most abundant bird species in North America, possibly the world, the passenger pigeon's population plummeted due to overhunting and habitat destruction.

How'd i get on the extinction thread again.

I think you should make it a regular part of your diet, that's the ticket.

'BUFFALO, NY — The PFAS levels found in Lake Erie fish are the highest in the Great Lakes region, according to the study. These toxins can pose health risks, with some studies linking them to cancer, thyroid disease, and weakened childhood immunities. The Environmental Working Group found if you eat one toxin-filled fish, it is equal to drinking contaminated water for a month. According to the study, fish found in Lake Erie have 11 parts per trillion of a toxin called PFAS. The levels are one of the highest in the country. What makes the chemical so dangerous is that the toxin is unbreakable, it stays in your system forever.'

Let me spell it out for you cuz you apparently don't get it. You can't flush the toxins out, they stay in your body and they build up forever. The more you eat the worse off you are and the sicker you're going to get. See you keep piling it on champ, I think you should prove that it's not true and eat four or five pounds of it a week.

Google has Elon Musk's net worth listed at $416 billion

it's imo likely that in the next 5 or 6 or so years he will be the country's first Trillionaire

totally unreal

he's one of the most amazing people ever to live on this planet

from Google - this is one of his business ventures:

"Yes, Elon Musk is planning to send humans to Mars, with a current goal of launching the first crewed mission in late 2028 or early 2029, following successful uncrewed cargo missions as early as 2026. The plan involves using SpaceX's Starship system to establish a self-sustaining city on the Martian surface, making humanity a multiplanetary species. While this is a long-term vision for Musk and SpaceX, it is independent of NASA's own plans for human missions to Mars, which are focused on the 2030s."

it currently takes 7 to 10 months for a spaceship to get to Mars

I plan on eating some of the salmon, and certainly sharing some with the friend who will be smoking it. He is a real fisherman with his own small fishing boat. He fishes on Lake Erie and caught 6 walleye this morning. He eats them and seems pretty healthy. He’s the guy who forages for mushrooms.

Your reading comprehension skills approach zero. Thinking about it, I don’t know if I’ve ever eaten fish from Lake Erie. And maybe a few times from Lake Ontario in my 35 years here. And to make you feel better, I don’t plan on any more of these fishing trips for quite a while.

A one-tree forest fire.

I'm constantly amazed by the job forest firefighters perform. In small groups, they often make the impossible look simple, so when I read 250 of them had been dispatched to battle a single tree I knew there was a story worth looking into.
Deep in the Oregon forest, this tree stands over 250 feet tall and caught fire at its top, perhaps by a lightning strike. Firemen have been trying to extinguish the fire for a week, but it keeps flaring up. The tree is so ancient that there are cave-like cavities throughout the trunk, and the fighters are playing wack-a-mole with the flames. They have managed to keep it contained to the single tree but as of now, they have not come up with a plan to put it out. The tree is about 450 years old, eleven feet in diameter and was one of the tallest trees in the world. While not in danger of being destroyed, it is estimated that the top fifty feet will be a total loss.

Let me spell it out for you again. Ontario, Erie, the only difference is they spell their names differently.

'Sediment surveys in 2022 showed elevated contamination in Lake Ontario
compared to Lake Erie, with Lake Ontario's sediment mercury levels being
significantly higher.'

Trump's mem coin is down 88% since January. Melania's coin is doing even worse- it's investors are down 98% since January. An examination of purchasing patterns indicates that a small group of buyers artificially inflated the price before dumping it on the unsuspecting public.

even if Soopoo and others like him can no longer safely eat the fish they catch

they can still enjoy the thrill of killing a fish

and proudly displaying the dead fish for all to see

That distinguishes it from any other meme coin... how?

People who invest in that stuff know what they are getting in to. For some it's a game of hot potato, others buy them to salute the creator of it and to have something that proves "I'm for this team!"

As an early adopter and miner I'm into the more practical stuff. "Crypto bro" is not my culture.

Do most of these coins lose 90% of their value? I don't follow them and know almost nothing about them. My nephew has supposedly made two million dollars over the last year hustling some sort of NBA imaging thing but can't explain it to me in a way that I'd put anything into it.

A mere 90%? Surely you jest!

This is done ultimately for fun. No one believed that Trumpcoin or Melaniacoin was going to be the next global currency. There are some in the crypto world who have plenty of money and believing in rewarding entertaining, technically creative, or edgy meme/coin developers, and buying a coin that tickles them is how they do it. There's no conspiracy.

I recall two other issues of Trump coins in the past.

Most of the people I've known who practice catch and release have a whole bunch of other problems too besides having way too much time on their hands.

I grew up fishing six days a week in the summer. We always ate what we caught. As I got into my midteens, I started hating those daily fishing trips. We mainly caught Perch and Walleye. The problem was that there was a limit of 50 Perch per day per person. The problem wasn't necessarily catching 50 fish, the problem became the 200 fish we caught regularly with four people in the boat. The fishing was fun, but the cleaning 200 fish when we got home became my issue. It was hot, dirty, tedious work that took many hours and as a teen those hours were torture. Of course, I wanted to be playing ball with my friends not fileting fish for hours.

It has been over 30 years since I cleaned a fish and will gladly pay someone else to do it.

He doesn't care about the coin he only posted it because of whose name is on it. It's a political post, plain and simple and he knows that's not allowed. So he tries to slip it in under the door.
