When I graduated college my plan was to move to a city that was booming because it would be easy to find a job. I moved from Iowa to the most economically booming city in the country at that time, las Vegas NV. I didn't have a job or an apartment I just loaded up a U-Haul and drove 1500 miles showed up in Vegas. Fortunately, I had a great job in college so I was financially comfortable for six months or more so there was no stress.

Having that savings right out of college is key. I doubt many of your working classmates had that as well. Many working students are merely eking by month to month, at least in our timeframes.

The internet makes it easier now. Lots of resources to look for work even before you go. You can even google earth to peek at what the town looks like. When I did relocate for work I was told call my new boss and they would send my plane tickets. Later when I relocated by choice I moved to a state TIMEZONE I had never been in before except in the air.
Thing is people either get amazed by that or tell you that you were/are crazy. If I was young now knowing what I know I would try for a job to be more nomadic. I feel I missed out even though I moved about more than average.

I don't remember ringtones being that popular in 2007. That was the first year of the iphone.

I was selling phones for a while around 2000-2003.
Ringtones were big business. People were coming in to see what new phones had what ringtones, and being able to download new ringtones via the ringtone store was huge.
Sensible people just wanted to place and receive calls and texts, but the market was driven by people focused on style rather than substance.

I was amazed that I stayed in Vegas for 30 years as I always considered myself nomadic. I am hoping to pick up again in a coupe of years and try someplace new that will probably be my last move.

You obviously have no idea what the term free time actually means. I consider most everything I do to fall under the umbrella of obligations. When you are fulfilling obligations that's not free time. Free time is when you have absolutely nothing to do and that never occurs in my life. I always have 18 things to do, 18 obligations to fulfill.

Maybe I'm too thick-headed to see where there's no "there" there in those examples. Escape into entertainment has been around for a very long time. Delivering your full quarter's worth of entertainment, along with a newsreel and a short cartoon hardly seems like a problem. Streamline Moderne objects focus on functional elegance... functional being an essential part of that.

Free time is when you have absolutely nothing to do and that never occurs in my life. I always have 18 things to do, 18 obligations to fulfill.

The old Soviet Union is a good example of no style and all substance. They didn't care what anything they manufactured looked like just so it worked. In the United States mostly since World War I everything's been about style. It is what sells things, it's what makes you stand out from everybody else, your product has more style than theirs. The term keeping up with the Joneses was in vogue in the 1930s, people who could afford it always had to have the newest style of everything. Advertising is at the bottom of everything, and after World War 1 advertising took off.

If one of your obligations was to rarely respond to one of my posts, you have miserably failed at fulfilling your obligation to yourself over the years, since I would say 85% of my posts I have made about or to you, you have actually responded to.
It's obvious why you responded the way you just did, because you know whatever honest crap you could mention would be absolutely laughable.
Stern is 71, to put that in perspective Rush Limbaugh died at 70 and said he intended to be on air until he died. His last broadcast was like 10 days before he went, so we can give him credit for doing so in my book. I have never heard if Stern intended to do the same, but if he goes off XM it is doubtful at that age that he would start somewhere else.
Howard Stern is the top draw for SiriusXM, at least in terms of promotion of the entire system to the public. He may see these ads and say he's done. Free speech is hitting a dead end rapidly this year and I think a lot of top talent will be withdrawing from public view shortly. DJ's playing the hits probably have little to worry about, but shock jocks always have an opinion. I'm reminded of some old geezer in the morning but he's dead and can't remember his name and really don't ever want to remember him.

Limbaugh had to in his last couple contracts because despite single handedly saving AM radio in the 1990s 20 years later the landscape was changing and the money was not there anymore. Shows run their course. But it is likely that the era of the big talk shows is over.
In the day you tuned in at least sporadically. If you were an outside employee, one in their car lots of the day, you usually eventually migrated to talk radio. I remember us talking about it in management training, most of us in our mid-20s then and it seemed weird. But eventually you wanted something other than music. Stern to Limbaugh to Leykis it worked like butter in the 90s, 00s even early teens.
But now podcasts are taking over. When I worked from home I usually still listened to Limbaugh until he died. But that was for nostalgia. I didn't listen to Hannity after nor Ingrahm before. I had several podcasts all narrow-casting to my interests. Then, when I wanted music, Pandora was there with a few channels I listened to depending on my mood.
Pay even $5 a month for XM? Why?
And that is why Stern is gone. Too much else out there.

My dad had Sirius when he died and I could not believe it. He was a guy that complained about a 40W bulb being on. But I guess he liked the channels that had old music and old radio shows.

I was also a daily communicant with Rush. I'm convinced he's the only person in media who never lied to us. When he came back from his addiction rehab, he said that being on the radio was the only thing he is successful at and the only place where he wasn't fake. Why would he throw that away by being fake? And such a kind person too; it would come out in a lot of his interactions with callers.
Being a lifelong radio geek, I've always liked AM as the only kind of radio you can build from stuff you find in a dumpster. Literally- a signal-powered radio can be built with a bunch of wire, an oatmeal box and kitchen magnet, and some random piece of metal that has built up an oxide layer that works as a semiconductor. In some remote place with a receiver, far away from power lines, an external antenna and maybe a ground terminal driven into the earth (depending on the antenna) can be a fun night out for me.
So this is the project I would do if I had the means and a place for it: a memorial to Rush Limbaugh, but built into it is a signal-powered AM radio, tuned to the local [content-appropriate] AM talk station. I wouldn't use dumpster parts for that but it would still be signal powered. People walking by, if it's not too noisy, will hear the radio coming out of the memorial 24 hours a day.
I'm afraid I can't recall a title or an author, but this would have been about 20 years ago, so a fairly modern design (but maybe with a Ge detector diode). Something may be lurking around the usual hobbyist webpages, possibly the ones that focused on regenerative receivers.
Sirius charges like $19/month but after my trial car subscription expired, I cancelled, then I got offered something cheaper for my car for less than a third of the price. Normally I would just get the streaming package over my phone for $5/month. Upgrading to get Stern would cost ~$24/month. I've seen several Reddit posts about cancelling Sirius at renewal time and then they get you a deal that makes it tolerable. My second radio cost $70, so I really abhor this subscription model. Whenever I drive out of town, I have to line up stations on my presets to pick up on the way and really they suck. Sirius can at least give me some '80's rock to keep me going for a couple hours. What I should do is download a bunch of albums and rip them to mp3's and put them on my phone and ditch all this subscription; but for now I'm hearing music I haven't heard in such a long time.

Remember the pirate radio stations in the '60s and '70s. Wolfman Jack, I used to listen to him sometimes if I could get them on my radio. He was at a huge station in Mexico and then the FCC came down hard in the 70s and 80s and it's mostly gone. There are still pirate stations in big cities mostly in Spanish but they don't go more than a couple miles.
Some years later, the Mexican government repealed that law and allowed radio preachers back on the air. But, without Wolfman Jack howling over the airwaves, XERB never duplicated the fame he had brought it. The XERB call sign was recycled in 1986 for a radio station in Cozumel, in the state of Quintana Roo with no relation to the old XERB.

Initially, Smith controlled the station's affairs from Minneapolis, but in 1966, Smith, along with fellow KUXL staffers Ralph Hull (also known as Preacher Paul Anthony and The Nazz) and Art Hoehn (also known as Fat Daddy Washington), relocated to Southern California to run XERB full-time.

I remember at the time they said lots of LA never reconfirm the 1960s riots. LA just seems to be a total mess nobody can fix. I was one documentary where they showed black guys who couldn’t go off their blocks. One said he never saw the ocean once in his life. Living in LA!

Got lost looking at the demise of FM radio in parts of Europe and it's replacement is DAB in the UK which is not gaining traction because of low bit rates and poor reception. In other European countries they've upgraded to DAB+ which has 128 kb/sec bit rates instead of 64 kb/sec or lower bit rates. SiriusXM is on the DAB+ standard now for bit rates but FM radio sounds better. There's years and years of YouTube videos complaining about the poor sound quality of Sirius radios and how 64 kb/sec mp3's sound equivalent or better. Maybe Sirius has upgraded since those times. But all these low bit rates are so they can jam as many channels as possible down the line.

I don't believe you get a 1099-k for shopping. The receiver of a payment is usually the one getting the 1099. That would be the dealer would get one for receiving over $5,000 in card payments.
