Seriously, a moderator is not supposed to throw gasoline on a fire. I blocked eb to avoid any conflict and never expected that a moderator would not respect it. Fair and balanced, my ass.
The funny thing is I have gordo blocked since he wrote that my charity work is just a fancy way of jerking off, and only noticed his post because it was quoted as one of the newest quotes.
In twenty five years of the internet, I think I'e blocked four people across numerous forums. Three have been here.
Anyways, if this sleazy attempt to instigate a fight isn't against the forum rules, it should be, and better moderators have resigned for less.

The flame is pretty big, so that's probably a lot of gold even if it's gold plated.

Maybe someone should make a heist movie about stealing it with a helicopter. Then Tom Cruise and the Mission Impossible team could find it and return it.

There you go Tom, your next movie. I only want a measly one percent of the gross. Or a half-percent, whatever,

Technical correction, gold leaf. is not gold plating.

If you're worth over 400 billion dollars my bet is he thinks about child support payments zero amount of the time. When you're worth over $400 billion dollars any amount of money if it's not in the millions means nothing to you. Elon Musk is worth $400,000 million dollars. You can't conceive of that much money it's not possible. There are 182 countries in the world and of those 182 only 37 have a greater wealth than Elon Musk. That means that one man is wealthier than 145 countries in the world. And you still can't wrap your mind around it.

Seems like a homemade highwater siren would be easy to construct. A simple float in a box that activates the alarm when it reaches the top. You stake it deep in the ground nearest the point where the water is likely to come in.

Because I also am annoyed by this thing that billryan does as well, and I would like him to either answer this very legitimate question or, at least, to think about this objection to what he does. The proliferation of so many billryan-created threads about historical oddities would not have a place in a well-curated forum. I wonder, perhaps we should give him a 'billryan's Corner' thread, like we do with Nathan where he could make interesting posts about historical curiosities and people he once knew. Or, maybe not, lol.

Axel, you say that "a moderator would know better" but is it fair for me to say that you almost never treat moderators as if that was the case?

Had some tornado activity just outside of town yesterday. It ripped off the roofs of some houses. There were photos of tornadoes in areas further away so what the news found may just be a point of damage they found, but there may be damage elsewhere not reported. TV News tends to focus on one point and miss everything else going on and just add a headline "widespread damage" without really elaborating what they mean. But they seem to have circled a 1 square mile area, but tornadoes were seen much further away. I'll have to check my storage units and see if they are OK.

On July 8th, 1944, American troops were engaged with the Japanese on the island of Saipan.. Ben Salomon was a 29-year-old Medical Officer, assigned to the battalion aid station, some 100 yards behind the Americans' defensive lines.
At 5 AM, perhaps the most significant Japanese Banzai attack of the war happened, as upwards of 5000 Japanese rushed the 800 Americans.
Within minutes, the American line began to crumble and Japanese soldiers neared the Aid station.
When a Japanese soldier entered the tent and bayoneted an American, Captain Saloman wrestled away his rifle and killed him. He then shot and killed four more soldiers who tried to enter the tent. His rifle now empty, he charged a soldier and beat him to death. Another invader jumped on his back, but Salomon killed him barehanded.
Seeing they were being overrun, he ordered his nurses to retreat and take the walking wounded. Picking up a Japanese rifle, he made his way outside to cover the retreat. Some twenty yards from the tent was a .30 caliber machine gun, and four dead machine gunners. Salomon fought his way to the gun and opened fire. No American lived to tell what happened next, but when the US Army retook the position, Captain Salomon was found slumped over the gun dead, shot or bayoneted 78 times, and 98 Japanese soldiers were dead in front of his weapon. An autopsy showed that almost half the stab wounds happened while he was alive

For his actions, Captain Benjamin Salomon, DDS, posthumously received the Medal of Honor, one of only three dentists to receive it, and one of three Jewish Soldiers to receive it in World War II.
Sadly, some here think such great Americans shouldn't be honored on this forum.

I loved that show as a kid, and didn't see it again for many years. I think that because it only lasted one season, it wasn't worthy of syndication.
I've always loved history and been fascinated by The Titanic, Halley's Comet, Gettysburg, and King Arthur., all of which were featured in episodes of the Time Tunnel.

I also ran across The Six Million Dollar Man movies before it was a TV series.
The first one was "The Moon and the Desert, Parts I and II" which was our introduction to Steve Austin from NASA and his fateful crash landing and rebuilding.
The second one was The Six Million Dollar Man: "Wine, Women and War" Parts 1 & 2, which included some casino scenes in the Bahamas and Britt Ekland.
The third one was The Six Million Dollar Man: "The Solid Gold Kidnapping" Parts 1 & 2 which I haven't seen yet. I got distracted to see the first two episodes of The Bionic Woman first.

I've never seen the original Six Million Dollar Man movie. It was a tv movie of the week, and I don't think it was ever rebroadcast.
The Bionic Woman was a spin-off of the SMDM, with some of the same cast, but it was on a different network. I'm not sure that had ever been done before, nor do I know why they did it.

Lots of self-wrecking cars though. A couple days ago a Tesla in self-driving mode turned left onto a railroad tracks because it thought it was a road and kept going then it got stuck and a train was coming and the passengers had to bail out. Train totally destroyed the car. If I was those passengers I'd be thinking about a lawsuit.

Tesla In 'Self-Drive Mode' Hit By Train ...
A Tesla operating in self-driving mode (either Autopilot or Full Self-Driving) in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, made a left turn onto a set of railroad tracks, mistaking them for a road. The vehicle traveled a short distance before being struck by a train on an adjacent track. Fortunately, the occupants had exited the vehicle before the collision and were unharmed."

But it's not the type of time travel that the writers have someone do, and travel to the past is nonsense.

Time travel is not possible because time does not exist the way we think it does. All we have is the present moment, the past does not exist. We have a memory of what we think is the past.

"The past does not exist is a concept suggesting that the past, as a collection of memories and perceptions, exists only in our minds and not as a separate, objective reality.'

We have photographs from the past but these are just imprints of what was then the present moment and we choose to call it the past. The actual past self, all the present moments strung together in our minds, are just a construct. There is no past it doesn't exist and you can't travel to a place that does not exist. This is what the Eastern Yogi's call enlightenment when they actually experience this in real time, that this is all there is. The actual realization of it changes your life.

I won't argue with that, but I'll add that time is a dimension through which we travel. This is a crucial concept to grasp and one physicists have been talking about since the late 19th century. HG Wells wrote "the Time Machine" before Einstein theorized about time dilation, he was exploring what scientists were saying prior to Einstein

We do not experience time in a direct way, we just know it exists and that it has effects on us. There is a thought experiment out there about the people who only live in 2 dimensions and only understand that world, but are affected by a 3rd dimension they know must exist. Google The " 'two-dimensional people' thought experiment" to read about this.

Honestly, largely we are these people. The third dimension throws us a bit, which I think explains why there are so many people who believe in a flat earth. Also, we are easily thrown by the requirments of 3 dimensional work, like how much concrete you need to fill a hole. Start talking about the 4th dimension, time, and no wonder people get lost.

I thought you liked sci-fi?

In the Ash video, he concedes that in what you can also call a thought experiment, a theoretical backtrack through a worm hole can only get you where you started in time, not truly the past since it would be your departure time plus some time that further elapses.

Time is both a dimension and a concept. The past does not exist anymore we cannot go there.

I certainly remember that. That was the German Merkur, wasn't it?

There was also a Mercury Mariner. Tonight the Seattle Mariners are playing the Yankees, and the Mariners are pitching Woo.

No, it was the badge engineered Mercury version of the first gen Escort.

I saw the matchup and wonder how many people notice, though it has to be Gen X and older.....
