Quote: gordonm888Quote: billryanFor some reason, new laws in Arizona take effect the Monday after Labor Day, so we have a bunch of new laws kicking in. One gives the police more discretion on whether they tow cars; another changes which services are subject to sales tax. Another makes lane splitting on a motorcycle a criminal offense instead of a traffic ticket and allows police to seize the bike. They also clarified the difference between lane filtering (legal) and lane splitting now criminal)
The gist of the new laws seems to moderate penalties for first offenders and stiffen penalties for repeat offenders and those who abuse the most vulnerable.

Lane splitting (driving a motorcycle between two lanes of moving cars) is only legal in one American state: California. Perhaps its an experiment in natural selection?
I believe that lane filtering (driving a motorcycle between two lanes of stopped cars) is legal in every state.

I do recognize it's a newer rule, barely 6 years old, but it's still on the list.

This is happening where I live. Kraft and Sheeran are each donating $2 million each, plus Macklemore's $1 million. No word on whether Kraft is backing down and going to allow Macklemore to perform at Gillette.
I will also say that, around here, Kraft's banishment move has backfired in the court of public opinion.

It's probably illegal for an American to send money to anyone in Gaza. It's controlled by terrorists and it is implausible that Hamas is not going to control that money.
Sending money to the Red Cross or some other organization that provides relief in war-affected areas is a different story, but if someone tells me that they are sending money to an organization based in Gaza I would not want any financial connection to that person either.

After hours of searching the web, I found a pretty good deal- a Chevy Trax for $28 a day, $297 total. It's with Dollar, a company I've never used. I make my reservation and fill out the paperwork. Everything is great until, on page 3, they ask if I am between 25 and 65. I answer no. A box pops up and asks for my age. I write 67. A new page appears and everything looks the same, but on page 5 of the agreement, the rate is now $567. A $280 surcharge for being over 65. I called the 800 number and was told they don't charge Seniors extra; instead, they offer discounts to people under 65. I did get her to lower the total rate to $519 but I'll keep looking.
Quote: billryanI'm looking to rent an SUV for a ten-day trip to Oklahoma. While EV infrastructure is pretty good along the interstates, there are still big gaps in many states' interiors. For example, I'd hoped to stop in Silver City and Roswell, but fast chargers in the area don't exist yet. A DC fast charger gives the equivalent of a half tank of gas in about twenty minutes, whereas a standard 1772 charger takes about an hour. On a thousand-mile trip, the difference adds up quickly.

Once. Then he died.
Both choices sucked, but one might lead to a better future.
My grandmother came to America after a distant cousin gave her boat fare in return for working two years as a housemaid. The only difference was that she was only morally bound, not legally bound. She made $6 a week, of which $1.50 went to room and board and another $1.50 towards the money advanced for transportation and expenses.
As she told it, after the two years, she barely had train fare to get from Boston to NYC when her betrothed arrived with a guaranteed job as a carpenter.
The Irish in Boston pooled their resources, and when they had enough, they'd buy a prepaid ticket for someone in their old town or a relative, and they'd come over and help pay for the next man's ticket.
Who ever heard of bringing ANY beverage to an interview? Who ever heard of brining anything more than a professional looking notepad, decent pen, and perhaps a briefcase you carried it in? FWIW I don't even bring a case unless it is some rare interview where I would need to carry some kind of props for said interview.
Who needs to bring a bottle of water for a 30 minute interview? Excepting for say someone diabetic or a condition, that is simply unprofessional.
The younger people defending it in the article make me think I see why so many say they cannot find jobs.
And if the interviewer has coffee and you don't? Deal with it!

To have water available is always acceptable when you will be speaking and we see that all the time, in courtrooms and conferences. And because people do have conditions, or they might have pills that they need to take immediately upon symptoms, that's not something an interviewer should pay any heed to. But to bring tea or coffee, or food, that suggests your attention might be on something other than the interview. Same for the interviewer in my opinion; if he's sitting there drinking coffee I might be wondering if this guy is serious or is jerking me around.
Back when smoking was done in offices there was a whole level of etiquette around that too. The higher ranked person may smoke, you may not, but if it's just two people he typically will offer you one and then you may. Someone who is smoking and offers you one is communicating he wants to talk to you for a while, but if he doesn't offer it could suggest he wants you out of here quickly.
Quote: billryanWhen I would hire workers for my clubs, I'd have someone offer the applicant a bottle of water. Most accepted. They then sat in a room by themselves for ten minutes or so before being escorted in to me. What they did with the bottle was their first test. Leave the empty bottle on the table, and you started the interview with two strikes. I don't think I ever had anyone walk in with their own beverage, but this generation marches to a different beat.

Offering it is a different thing and I have heard of the see-what-they-do-with-it test elsewhere, and it is not a bad test. I just find that to bring a drink into an interview with you to be very very weird.

It wouldn't bother me at all. Some low class companies abandon candidates for an hour or two in a waiting room, so the fact that they're showing up ready for anything is a boon.
If they're more effective caffeinated and they arrive caffeinated, more power to them. When I see a candidate in the lobby, I greet them and make sure they know where the washroom, water, and coffee is.... and I don't generally interview or further interact with candidates until they've been around for a week or two.
I only feel it is wildly inappropriate to show up with a beverage for a foodservice position.

Caffeinate and nutriate on the way in, on the train or in the car or bus or whatever. Have a bottle of water, but kept in your briefcase or purse or whatever for just before the interview and for afterwards. If offered, be polite and gracious if you either accept of decline. Ask what to do with the empty water bottle or cup at the end of the interview.

I'm guessing that in grade school, you might be allowed to get a sip of water at the drinking fountain between classes. Now, all the kids are carrying their own water bottles, and are encouraged to stay hydrated as needed. I don't think "8 glasses a day" is new, there is just less hypocrisy between policy and practice.

The only constant is change!
When I briefly worked in management, I had some unique rules:
There are 4 ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way, the company way, and MY WAY! If you're working for me, you do things...
...the right way. If the company has a problem with that I'll deal with it. You can't do things my way, or else you'd be me.
We don't "look busy." When the job is done, we go home.
Old men are allowed to drink on the job.
Young men must challenge me to fight before I take them seriously.
Women are allowed absenteeism, especially if they have children, but they must accept roles where absenteeism won't be an issue. They are also exempt from jobs that are dirty, dangerous, or degrading.
If a job is exceptionally dangerous, dirty, or degrading, or especially illegal or unethical, nobody does that but me. You don't even get to watch. What are you looking at? Go on, get out of here.

There was a bar across the street. I always stuck to vodka tonics at lunch; I hate them, but I also knew that when they started to taste good, I couldn't be effective that afternoon. Excellent chicken sandwiches, though.

I watch a couple of these historical AI videos a day now and I always learn something. Last night I learned that the United States didn't start printing $1 bills until 1929. Before then people used coins for purchases up to $5. In the 19th century depending on where you lived your bank might be able to print its own money and they had dollar bills but they were not printed by the United States. People did not trust paper money they much preferred gold and silver. In today's economy a $20 gold piece from 1900 it's worth $4500 just in the gold And it could easily sell for $100,000 if it's in mint condition.

You need to find better sources. The 1896 and 1899 one-dollar bills are considered the most beautiful specimens of American currency and are highly valued, as are the 1917 George Washington notes. The US has printed one-dollar bills since 1862, although many places in the West didn't like them. Banks preferred to use coins because it was harder for a bank robber to steal a thousand silver dollars than a couple of bills. Larger transactions used bills for the opposite reason.
National Bank Notes were printed by the US but had the name of a local bank. The reasons behind that were complicated and not easy to explain without a deep dive into the finacial system.
In 1929, the size of all U.S. currency was reduced by about thirty percent to its current size. Older bills are known as horseblankets because of their size.

Where have I expressed an opinion? A musician I haven't heard much about in years was fired from being an opening act and is now headlining his own tour. I find it interesting. Its Rock and Roll. It's supposed to be controversial.
Just because one person wants to make it political shouldn't mean the rest of us have to suffer. If the conversation goes from discussing Maclklemore's comeback to something else, you should take appropriate action. I'd say bringing up the tour title should be suspension-worthy. Why start controversy, especially as a moderator?
Ed Sheeran was having trouble selling tickets when he had the full tour. As a solo act, I don't think he can sell out stadiums anymore.
Can we discuss Kid Rock's shows being canceled for low ticket sales? How about the Beach Boys canceling their tour after Mike Love wasn't up for it?
