As I said in another thread, I rank lyrics high as part of a song. Here are a few of my favorites:

Pat Benatar "We belong"

"Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes end try to dream
Clear your mind and do your best
To try and wash the pallette clean.
We can begin to know it
How much we really care
I hear your voice inside me
I see your face everywhere

We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We're both falling under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong. We belong,
We belong together."

Laura Brannigan "Show Me Heaven"

"There I go
I'm shaking just like the wind
Hey baby, I need your hand
To steady me.
I'm not denying
I'm frightened as much as you
Though I'm barely touching you
I've shivers down my spine.
And it feels divine."

Olivia Newton John "Tied up"

"Here's the opportunity
Come and take it to the Nth degree
Don't be nervous I don't have to be
Tied up in promises
Oooh, tied up in words that cut too deep
Tied up in promises
we could never keep."

RUSH "The Sphere"

"We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim
Let the Truth of Love be lighted
Let the Love of Truth shine clear.
Sensibility. Armed with Sense and Liberty
With the Heart and Mind united
in a single, perfect Sphere."

The Bangles "Lost at Sea."

"Like a star
in a night filled with tears
make the sadness disappear
'cause you're all that I hold dear.
Well we are never, ever looking back
One defends and one attacks.
There's a thousand reasons
To begin again.

Could it be, that we're lost at sea
and we're drowning under the stars?
Up to me, I would ride this wave
before it gets too far
What a lonely way to be
Lost at sea."

More later. I'm supposed to be working now...

Here is one of my favorites:

Men at Work "Overkill"

"I can't get to sleep
I think about the implications
Of diving in too deep
And possibly the complications

Especially at night
I worry over situations
I know I'll be alright
Perhaps it's just imagination

Day after day it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear
Ghosts appear and fade away

Alone between the sheets
Only brings exasperation
It's time to walk the streets
Smell the desperation

At least there's pretty lights
And though there's little variation
It nullifies the night from overkill

Day after day it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear
Ghosts appear and fade away
Come back another day

I can't get to sleep
I think about the implications
Of diving in too deep
And possibly the complications

Especially at night
I worry over situations
I know I'll be alright
It's just overkill"

Men At Work might go down in history as an unusual two-hit wonder...

Anwyay:

Heart "Allies"

"We search our hearts
to justify the reason
And draw the line
To meet somewhere halfway
If faith is blind
Through darkness it will guide us
'Cause the spirit still remains
With the keepers of the flame.

Allies, with our backs against the wall
I will answer when you call
And take on the odds for what
We believe is true
Allies, in a world of too much choise
I only need your voice
Tell me you care
I'll be anywhere for you
Allies."

Olivia Newton John "Make a Move on Me"

"You make the prettiest speech I've heard
But a single touch surely is worth a thousand words
To a heart that's open wide
and from the start was on your side

Won't you spare me all the charms
and take me in your arms?

I can't wait
I can't wait

I'm the one you want
That's all I gotta be
So come on baby
Make a move on me"

Belinda Carlisle "Heaven is a Place on Earth."

"In this world we're just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby I was afraid before
But I'm not afraid, anymore.

Ooh baby do you know what that's worth?
Ooh Heaven is a place on Earth."

I think about the Strip whenever I hear this one:

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer "Karn Evil 9, First Impression, Second Part"

"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
We're so glad you could attend
Come inside! Come inside!
There behind a glass is a real blade of grass
be careful as you pass.
Move along! Move along!

Come inside, the show's about to start
guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth.
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo.
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll ....

Right before your eyes we pull laughter from the skies
And he laughs until he cries then he dies then he dies
Come inside the shows about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart "

From http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/onthecov.htm:
Quote: Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, "Cover of the Rolling Stone" intro

Well we're big rock singers, we've got golden fingers
And we're loved everywhere we go
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
At ten thousand dollars a show

The funny thing about that song is, when they finally got their picture on the cover, it was a charicature. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cover_of_the_Rolling_Stone

From http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/blood_sweat_tears/and_when_i_die.html:

but I pray there ain't no hell.

Styx "Babe"

"Babe, I'm leaving, I must be on my way
The time is drawing near
My train is going, I see it in your eyes
The love, the need, your tears
But I'll be lonely without you
And I'll need your love to see me through
So Please believe me, my heart is in your hands
And I'll be missing you.

Cause You know it's you Babe
Whenever I get weary and I've had enough
Feel like giving up
You know it's you Babe
Giving me the courage and the strength I need
Please believe that it's true
Babe, I love you."

Led Zeppelin
Hey lady--you got the love I need
Maybe more than enough.
Oh Darling... walk a while with me
You've got so much...

Many have I loved - Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.

Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.

Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many many men can't see the open road.

Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know, ooh!
You really ought to know...

Ther's a couple reasons for that.

A) Most of us are much more than 20 years old.

B) Most of the music less than 20 years old, sucks.

B) - Gah!

I whole-heartedly agree with with point B. I'm less sure about point A as being a reason for the phenomenon. I'm 30 years old. I was born in 1980. The newest song I've quoted here was released when I was 2 years old. You'd think that some song from the '90's, when I was a teenager, would come to my mind as being good/important. I guess I could consider some particularly salient passage from a Nirvana or Green Day song to be worthy of this discussion, but not nearly as readily fit for inclusion as the other lyrics that have been mentioned by us all.

I suppose I could pick exceptions to the rule, but I can't think of one off hand.

Or for that matter take Shakira. She's got a great voice, but I don't like a single one of her songs. She's also one of the most beutiful women in the world. I like saying she has a voice to die for and a face to kill for.

Oh, well.

The Carpenters "Top of the World"

"Something in the wind has learned my name
and it's telling me that things are not the same.
In the leaves on the trees
In the church of the breeze
There's a place and sense of happiness for me.

There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be
Just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are near."

But then given how Karen Carpenter lived and, tragically, died, I have to wonder if she meant it.

The Go Gos "Our Lips Are Sealed."

"Can you hear them?
They're talking 'bout us
telling lies, well, that's no surprise.

Can you see them?
See right through them.
They have no shields no secrets to reveal.

Doesn't matter what they say
In the jealous games people play.
Our lips are sealed.

Pay no mind to what they say
Doesn't matter anyway
Our lips are sealed."

"Living on the lighted stage
approaches the unreal
for those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
the under-gilded cage.
[..]
Cast in this unlikely role
Ill-equipped to act
With insufficient tact
I can't pretend a stranger is

Stripped of the music, it's still poetry.

Living on the road my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
Your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boys
His horse was fast as polished steel
Wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dying words
That's the way it goes

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him hang around
Out of kindness I suppose

Lefty he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

The poets tell how Pancho fell
Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
So the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true,
But save a few for Lefty too
He just did what he had to do
Now he's growing old

A few gray federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him go so wrong
Out of kindness I suppose
A falling knife has no handle.

Mosca, I love that song. Written by Townes Van Zandt, but Merle and Willie's version is the most well known.

I saw Merle Haggard in concert this year. Have never seen Willie. He was at Red Rocks in Denver around Labor Day but I couldn't get tickets.

I saw Willie a couple summers ago, he was part of a 3 way package with John Mellencamp and Bob Dylan. Phenomenal. He really held his own. Each of the three was spectacular on their own, as a package it was memorable. My daughter'd asked for me to take her and a friend, for her high school graduation, and she'd never heard Willie Nelson before then, she left pretty impressed, she bought a shirt.

Dylan can be hit or miss; that night, he was great.

The Beatles "Cried For No One."

"The day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you

She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind her tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years"

The Bangles "Make a Play for Her Now."

"Go on, make a play for her now
While I'm standing here
I'll bleed so slow
You may never know
And I won't make a sound
Who am I to lay the blame
When it's all a game to you
[..]
In the back of your mind
The pattern's starting to unwind
And you know you're alone
Oh, but you smile anyhow
When the moment allows
Make a play for her now."

I am a huge Robert Earl Keen fan...and this is one of my favorite Christmas songs...

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE FAMILY
(Robert Earl Keen Jr.)
Robert Earl Keen - 1994

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
At our Christmas party
We were drinkin' champagne punch
And homemade eggnog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn't know what to think of him
Til he sang Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad

Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
And the two identical twins
From his second wife MaryNell
Of course he brought his new wife Kaye
Who talks all about AA
Chain smokin' while the stereo plays
Noel, Noel, The first Noel

Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Mix Margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quik-Pak store
We need some ice and an extention cord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
A box of tampons and some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Fran and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can't remember how I'm kin to them
But when they tried to plug their motorhome in
They blew our christmas lights
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
So we all waited on our front lawn
He threw the breaker and the lights came on
And we sang Silent Night
Oh Silent Night

Carve the turkey turn the ballgame on
Make Bloody Marys cause we all want one
Send somebody to the Stop 'n Go
We need some celery and a can of fake snow
A bag of lemons and some Diet Sprite
A box of tampons and some Salem Lights
Hallelujah everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Feliz Navidad.

I enjoy seeing "lesser known" songwriters in more intimate settings...but there really are so many great songs with stories behind them--either the story of the song or the story of our lives and how the song defines a moment.

Speaking of REK (but not directly), and lesser known singer-songwriters, Mrs Mosca got me the bestest Christmas present EVAR... tickets to a double billing, Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt! (Lovett and REK lived next door to each other in the '70s.)

Hiatt has written an incredible number of hits for other people, including "Feels Like Rain" and "Thing Called Love" for Bonnie Raitt, "Angel Eyes" for Jeff Healy, "The Way We Make a Broken Heart" for Rosanne Cash, and dozens more.
A falling knife has no handle.

Intervention (2006)

The Arcade Fire

The king's taken back the throne
The useless seed is sown
When they say they're cutting off the phone
I'll tell 'em you're not home

No place to hide
You were fighting as a soldier on their side
You're still a soldier in your mind
Though nothing's on the line

You say it's money that we need
As if we're only mouths to feed
I know no matter what you say
There are some debts you'll never pay

Working for the church
While your family dies
You take what they give you
And you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

I can taste the fear
Gonna lift me up and take me out of here
Don't wanna fight, don't wanna die
Just wanna hear you cry

Who's gonna throw the very first stone?
Oh! Who's gonna reset the bone?
Walking with your head in a sling
Wanna hear the soldier sing

Working for the Church
While my family dies
Your little baby sister's
Gonna lose her mind
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

I can taste your fear
It's gonna lift you up and take you out of here
And the bone shall never heal
I care not if you kneel

We can't find you now
But they're gonna get their money back somehow
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say that you were never here

Been working for the church
While your life falls apart
Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart
Every spark of friendship and love
Will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

LOL, Jerry. The guy who wrote

Crazy
Hello Walls
Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain
Yesterday's Wine
Funny How Time Slips Away
Did I Ever Say I Love You
Night Life
On The Road Again
Good Hearted Woman

can smoke whatever he wants, in my book. Now, not paying his taxes, that's different; he gotta pay up, and he did. But the pothead part, who cares, just keep writing and singing.

He's an old fart stoner who we laugh at today.

Don't Give up - Peter Gabriel

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
But no one wants you when you lose

Don't give up... 'cos you have friends
Don't give up... You're not beaten yet
Don't give up... I know you can make it good

Though I saw it all around
Never thought I could be affected
Thought that we'd be the last to go
It is so strange the way things turn

Drove the night toward my home
The place that I was born, on the lakeside
As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground

Don't give up... You still have us
Don't give up... We don't need much of anything
Don't give up... 'cause somewhere there's a place
Where we belong

Rest your head
You worry too much
It's going to be alright
When times get rough
You can fall back on us
Don't give up
Please don't give up

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
Going to stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
And whatever may go
That river's flowing
That river's flowing

Moved on to another town
Tried hard to settle down
For every job, so many men
So many men no-one needs

Don't give up... 'cause you have friends
Don't give up... You're not the only one
Don't give up... No reason to be ashamed
Don't give up... You still have us
Don't give up now... We're proud of who you are
Don't give up... You know it's never been easy
Don't give up... 'cause I believe there's the a place
There's a place where we belong
----- You want the truth! You can't handle the truth!
