I have several personal "categories":

Most Beautiful: O Holy Night

Most Inspiring/Uplifting: Adeste Fideles (in Latin, of course)

Favorite Non-English: Stille Nacht

Favorite Lesser-known: Bring A Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (I love it in the original French)

Favorite to Sing: The Holly and the Ivy

I'd like to wish everyone a happy holiday season, however you celebrate it, and whatever your persuasion or creed. To me, this time of year is about family and friends, and celebrating the ties that we have with them. We gather in our respective circles, and pull ourselves a little closer to the center. We talk endlessly here about ways to win at gambling, but the love we celebrate at this time of year is what truly makes life positive EV.
The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality.---George Bernard Shaw

Is this supposed to be a poll, or is it a tear-jerker for the ages?

I do not have a favorite, if I had to choose then White Christmas, but I listened to yours and they are all very nice.

The reason for the season... It is a birthday and we should celebrate it as a birthday.
We all should know Jesus was born in the month of April and that the "Evil Church" way back when changed the date to December to be more popular with a pagan celebration in hope that more pagans would embrace Christianity and new pagan converts could still hold onto old traditions. Yuck.

100% truth is my positive EV.

A local census was taken by Quirinius during 6 CE, but that would have been when Jesus was about ten years of age.

I'm no historian, but wouldn't that make the year of Jesus' birth 4 BCE? I thought the whole point of the BCE/CE split (a.k.a. BC/AD) was based on the year of Jesus' birth...

Kind of a New Years song, but check out "My Dear Acquaintance" by Regina Spektor.

Absolutely gorgeous, might even bring a tear to your eye!

I like that carol that goes "Starlight ... etc. " and then they sing "Gloria in Excelcis Deo" ... geez I don't remember much of it but I do like it. Anyone know the name?

Perhaps, Angels We Have Heard On High? it has the Gloooo ooooo oooooo oooooo ria, but I'm not sure about the Starlight you mentioned.

I like :

It's cliched to be cynical at Christmas - Half-man, Half Biscuit (I also love All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit, but it's not very seasonal).
You're a mean one, Mr Grinch - Aimee Mann (from "Another Drifter in the Snow")
O Little Town of Bethelhem - Traditional
Silent Night - Traditional

And of course, nothing says Christmas like the Fairytale of New York, by the late Kirsty MacColl and the very much alive somehow Shane MacGowan.

Great idea! Who cares when he was born....he was BORN, just like all of us. And we all celebrate birthdays regardless!

My favorite song: Oh Come All Ye Faithful
It was so popular, we used to sing it in the college dorms.

Ones that remind me of Christmas when I was younger :-

Silent Night
Away In A Manger
O Little Town Of Bethlehem
White Christmas (By Bing Crosby)

One that is the most fun at Christmas time is :-

Fairytale In New York (must have similar taste to thecesspit :-) ).

Merry Christmas Everybody (By Slade) reminds me of being drunk down the pub singing along :-) :-)

Sometimes at soccer games, especially when the referee suck (which is frequent), I use that same tune to sing ...

teddys might have "We Three Kings of Orient Are" mixed with "Angels We Have Heard on High"; WTK has that "star of wonder, star of might, star of royal beauty bright" in it, and the general chord structure of the two is similar.

My favorite day of the year is Dec 26th because its as far away as you can get from NEXT Xmas. My second is June 25th, because its the farthest from Xmas in both directions. You think I'm joking. I'm not.
