I thought about trying to do a quiz, loosely based on general knowledge, but making it so that 'Google' wasn't much help in solving the puzzles (except, perhaps, useful in checking your answers).

I also noticed that Croupier is compiling a quiz so didn't want to add extra quizzes but felt that this was different enough. Also feel free to seek as much help (online or offline) as you wish to try and solve these teasers :-)

They all follow the same format i.e. each puzzle starts with a number followed by a series of letters. You have to work out what the letters stand for. For example, if the puzzle is "7 D of the W" you have to work out what the D and W stand for (in this case Days and Week).

Teasers are on a variety of topics, including one relating to Christmas (not saying which one:-) ).

Anyone who manages to get all 10 correct then I will donate a suitable prize - will consult with The Wizard as to what would be agreeable/permitted by him. So, it may be best to wait until you have as many answers as possible before posting and also posting the question numbers that you have answers for rather than the answer itself. Swapping/exchanging answers is totally allowed and encouraged and can obviously be done in privacy. If nobody gets all 10 correct then the highest number of correct answers will win the (unknown as yet?) award/prize.

Questions are not in the order of difficulty although I think the trickier ones are towards the end.

First correct set of answers received AFTER 3pm (PST), 11pm (GMT) on Friday 17th will win. Good Luck !!!

Complete the missing words (units are omitted from the numbers) :-

1. 206 B in the HB.
2. 1063 H of the ET.
3. 50 W to LYL.
4. 2807 BP of G.
5. 476 F of the RE.
6. 170 HC in D.
7. 1 P in a PT.
8. 4.25 D of a GH.
9. 318,979,564,000 C of the FFM in C.
10. 22 DP in BS.

I got 7 of them last night. I don't know how you could make the three I'm missing harder, though!

Which 3 are you having difficulty with ?

I was hoping that most people would get a few of them right which is why I used Friday as a deadline. Looks like ME has fallen on something he finds quite simple.

I'm interested how The Wiz is finding it especially as he had a head-start as I told him one of the answers while I was in Vegas :-)

5, 6, and 10. I thought sleeping on them would give me inspiration, but no joy.

You did say I could use references - this certainly wasn't off the top of my head. I'll send you a PM with my answers and you let me know if I got all 10 right.

Those are the two I got without googling. I got all of the rest except #10 by looking them up.

Mosca, do you have 9 answers as well ? I knew you could google the answers once you had thought of them - did you find web references to the answers before you thought of them ?

D'oh! I was decidedly overthinking #5. I also think I have #6, but it's pretty obscure if I'm right.

Now for #10. I concede the contest to ME, but I still want to keep working on it!

PM sent, I can only get 8 of them now. I can't remember how I got #8 (or what it was), I never got #10, and the only 2 I got without help were 3 and 5.

#6 isn't that obscure but it is one of the trickier ones (I think).

#10 is possibly the hardest but you have a slight advantage, I suppose, if you know me (as ME does).

OK, I got #10; no way I would have known, I've never been to that area. Now to work on #8. I think I know what the "D" is, but not the "GH".

edit: got it. I'd known the d, couldn't get the gh without the hint.

9/10 so far. An interesting answer for #6 but that's the one that's not right.

I wonder how The Wiz' is getting on ? Hopefully he's finding it difficult :-)

Replied to PM. Amazing coincidence but I think the site has not converted feet to metres correctly. Still funny that they got 170 which is the number required in the question. I almost feel that you should have it correct by default :-)

Just to explain, FarFromVegas had "Highest Cliff in Dover" as the answer and one website has recorded the highest cliff as being 350 feet (which is correct) But then coverted that to 170 metres, which is incorrect. Amazing how their error has led to fitting in so well with the question :-) (I think they meant to put 107m not 170m).

Here are the answers to the quiz despite some people getting the solutions very quickly. Thank's to all those that spent time thinking about the solutions and I hope you enjoyed the different aspect to the usual quiz.

1. 206 = bones in the human body
2. 1063 = height of the Eiffel Tower (in feet)
3. 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover (Paul Simon, 1975)
4. 2807 = boiling point of gold (Celcius)
5. 476 = fall of the Roman Empire
6. 170 = highest checkout in darts
7. 1 = partridge in a pear tree
8. 4.25 = diameter of a golf hole (in inches)
9. 318,979,564,000 = combinations of the first four moves in chess.
10. 22 = dealer pushes in Blackjack Switch

Enjoy the festive season and "Good luck" to all in the New Year.

Maybe some people just have a knack for these type of puzzles. ME, Mosca and FarFromVegas all did really well with the questions and ME completed the lot in a very short time.
