As almost no one in the gambling community knows (with the exception of Mike, who I've discussed poetry with for years), I've been obsessed with poetry pretty much my whole life. This book is a collection of my poems written during the period 2017-2020. For those who may be on the fence about the whole "Eliot writes poetry" concept, here are some reviews:
Just when you think Jacobson is going to make a point or reach a conclusion, he finds yet another tragically obvious way to get totally lost.
— Sir Franklin Johns, Professor Emeritus of English, Queen Maud Gulf College
I don’t know why Jacobson thinks this is poetry. It’s just the convoluted meanderings of a distracted troglodyte. Doesn’t this guy have anything better to do?
— Feelius Upham, Senior Editor, Inside Poetry Weekly
What you are reading here is not poetry. At best, Jacobson has created a sequence of incoherent and unrelated sentences that start nowhere and go nowhere.
— Mona Topia, Board President, Buzzkill Magazine
Wait, this stuff is supposed to be poetry? I’ve seen soccer hooligans write better poetry on urinal walls.
— Kara Laptev, Poet in Residence, East Kenilworth University.
This poetry is about as scintillating as weather channel reruns. The author can’t even manage an inferiority complex because his inferiority is too simple.
— Ceta Famembert, Editor-in-Chief, The Cheddarer
The lack of clarity, logic and reason in the words and thoughts set in these pages by Eliot Jacobson leaves little doubt that humanity is doomed.
— Michael Suremer, Editor-in-Chief, Elliptical Inspirer Magazine
Quote: teliotWith Mike's permission, I'm here to announce my latest book, "Totally Disconnected," is now available on Amazon.

Congrats on getting your book published. Based on the reviews I almost want to read it.

You had me at "weather channel reruns".
Hopefully people will find artistry in the words, and not just use the book as a gift card holder in a white elephant exchange.
Thanks.
Well, they are all so different and about so many different topics ... but here is the poem that references the book cover:Quote: MrVCould you grace with a sample of your craft?
Thanks.

Not bad. I'd add more BPMs but I like the hooks.
The Modern Unicorn is a good example of Eliot's work. I hope he won't mind if I quote another. I'll quote a short one, because I'm too lazy to type out anything longer.
Quote:
Super Bowl XLI
Sis chanted spiritual songs
by her bedside
things became things
just as surely as ever
I sat in the lobby
watching the super bowl
quietly rooting for
the losing team
-- Eliot Jacobson
I love the part about quietly rooting for the losing team! That is exactly what I used to do before I started betting on the game.
Fun fact time! -- True or false, there are unicorns in the bible?
Wow, thanks for your kind words Mike! I know that I've tried to get you interested in modern poetry a few times, great to hear your enjoying my weird take on it.Quote: WizardI am about half way through Totally Disconnected and loving it. I never thought I would say that about a book of poetry. This book lends evidence to my theory that Eliot is indeed my evil twin.

Quote: odiousgambitFalse. No Unicorns.
Quote: Psalm 92:10But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.
Quote:I see you are still into the Bible. What version are you reading? Or is it some kind of study guide?

I personally like to read the NIV for it's everyday language, but when I quote something (like about the unicorns), I prefer the King James, because it just sounds more official and pious.

You're very welcome. For most of my life I've joked, "My idea of good poetry begins with 'There was an old man from Nantucket.'"
I must admit that, at first, I thought your poetry was unconventional and even a little disturbing. However, when seeing the entirety of it in your book, I learn to appreciate your style. The reviews at the beginning are great and I helped me, at least, get me into the right frame of mind that I'm not about to read a Shakespeare sonnet.
Funny you should mention those two things. One idea that didn't make it into the book was having a "Mr. Bill Speare" write a review that said something ungrammatical like "This is the bestest poetry that anyone anywhere has written in the last 400 years!"Quote: WizardI must admit that, at first, I thought your poetry was unconventional and even a little disturbing. Sort of a trick question. King James translates it to unicorns but other versions translate the word to wild ox.

Interesting. Let's not hijack the thread further with a bible study on unicorns.
Speaking of unicorns, Eliot, what is Shirley's opinion on this bit of logic I've seen on a t-shirt:
Unicorns are awesome.
I am awesome.
Therefore, I am a unicorn.

Unicorns see no difference between your logic above and these assertions:
I am a man.
Your father is a man.
Therefore, I am your father.
Or:
1 is a number
2 is a number
Therefore 1 = 2.
But this one is much harder to crack for unicorns:
A loaf of bread is better than nothing.
Nothing is better than sex.
Therefore, a loaf of bread is better than sex.
I was just curious about the title "Totally Disconnected"
if you don't mind my asking do you personally feel as if you're disconnected from things - what things? -
I've read some, not all of your posts and you're writing and I wouldn't have guessed that you are a disconnected person
from what I read of your resumé I wouldn't have surmised a disconnected person
actually you seem to have been highly connected
just curious - no need to respond if you don't feel like it
.
A very reasonable question ... here is what I have written to explain the title:Quote: lilredrooster_____________

In mathematics, totally disconnected refers to a type of topological space that you can look up on Wikipedia, if you’re into that kind of thing. I worked extensively with a certain totally disconnected space for my Ph.D. dissertation. This nuanced phrase has followed me through the years.
As I started writing poetry I realized that totally disconnected is a metaphor for how I seem to miss out on social signals that are obvious to most people. I can’t remember the details of many of the most important events in my life. I can’t recall names and faces. Often, I can’t recall meeting people who seem to know me quite well. Life is passing me by and I’m missing it. But, ask me to remember a phone number, that I can do! Music, games and mathematics all come easily to me. Yeah, it’s like that.
These poems are first of all about my personal disconnection. But they also look at the larger context of humanity’s ever evolving disconnection with the natural and physical world. Collectively, we are facing the disintegration of relationships, the uglification of politics, widespread disease, poverty and conflict, and a climate moving towards creating an inhospitable planet. Near-term human extinction is, unfortunately, not entirely implausible...
