Anyone interested slap your name down here, and unless there are any objections I would nominate myself as quizmaster and collate the scores.
Needless to say all questions will need to be answered using the hono(u)r system, so Google and the like will be off limits.
As to prizes, I would be willing to buy the Victor a drink at WOVCon should they be in attendance, or maybe the Wizard could be persuaded to throw in some goodies
Closing date for registering interest will be the Tuesday 30th of November, with the first questions being set on Wednesday December 1st.
EDIT - I have no idea why this split after an edit.
Will Croupier ever finish his 99 fun Vegas facts?
(Sorry man... Had to do it!)
All outstanding commitments to threads will be completed by December 1st.
And thanks for the duplicate thread warning in the other thread.
To quote a famous writer, "I can answer any question, provided 'I don't know' counts as a valid answer." :P

Sometimes my wife or co-worker will say, "Can I ask you a question?"
If they pause, my response is always: "As long as you're not too fussy about the answer..."
Quote: DJTeddyBearI like that.
I'm glad you do. I do consider "I don't know" a valid, and often, truthful answer.
But you missed the point, and ona trivia thread no less: Who am I quoting? :P
PS I may be paraphrasing, but the spirit of the quote is intact even if the letter ain't.
Just to get the ball rolling:
Can anyone name the three independent republics that were absorbed into the United States in the 19th century?
Quote: CalderI'm willing to embarrass myself.
Me too.

Banana Republic. They were the first retail outlet to sell Levi's. What do I win?
Quote: EvenBobBanana Republic. They were the first retail outlet to sell Levi's. What do I win?
Cold turkey.
Was California (the Bear Republic) the last of them?

I'll guess Mark Twain. Second guess = George Bernard Shaw.
And count me in as well.

What about Hawaii ? And is it too late to give Michigan back ? Go Bucks.

I'm going to go with Texas, the Confederacy, and the Golden Bear Republic (northern California).
Croupier, may I suggest extending the deadline a day or two. Here in the states we're celebrating Thanksgiving today, but the festivities pretty much extend to Sunday. A lot of us Yanks travel to visit relatives, and some of us may miss the opportunity to sign up.
PS: TX and CA, but CSA nay I'm betting.
can't come up with the 3rd on my own, though.
Hawaii was a Kingdom, not a republic. Perhaps the Phillipines were a republic or what about Puerto Rico, was it considered a republic?Quote: JohnnyQWhat about Hawaii ? And is it too late to give Michigan back ? Go Bucks.
If any State is going to be given back,,, let it be Florida, not just the Conch Republic of Key West.
Levis sole in the Banana Republic? They were sold in Seattle long before the Banana Republic stores opened. Gold mining fields of California had them. Invented by a miner I thought.
Banana Republic stores were clever merchandisers but I don't think they ever made history.
Statehood was, but US Territory was far earlier. Perhaps it was known as the Republic of Dole Pineapple then???Quote: WizardHawaii was 20th century anyway.

I should have thought of that. I read Hawaii many years ago -- good book.
Here is an obscure trivia question, a short essay type actually.
Why was the area code for New York (pre-splits) set as 212?
Quote: JohnnyQI'll guess Mark Twain. Second guess = George Bernard Shaw.
Third guess?
It occurs to me that, although I was the first to respond to this thread, with the above post, that I never really said "Count me in."Quote: DJTeddyBearI have a trivia question!

Although the history question already posed is beyond me, um, count me in.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I thank the Wizard for pointing this out, and will extend the deadline to 30th of November, and have the first questions on December 1st.

I know that one: it's quick to dial on a rotary phone.
(Count me in too.)

Yes--California, Texas, and West Florida.
Quote: WizardHawaii was 20th century anyway. Puerto Rico would be a viable answer, but if that counts, we should consider Cuba and the Phillipines as well. I'm not saying their situations are exactly the same, but my knowledge of the Spanish-American war is starting to run real thin here. Maybe MKL meant the 50 states only.
Those three lands were Spanish territories when we annexed them after the Spanish-American war.
Quote: MoscaTexas & Cali came right to mind, I like CSA for the third answer but never would have thought of it myself.
But as an answer, it isn't quite correct--we never absorbed the CSA back into the US AS A REPUBLIC--we readmitted the individual states, one by one. So kudos for imagination, but...
Well, if the prize is gonna be booze, you can be sure fleastiff will slap his name down. I'm presently bumping my chin against the footrail but I should be okay by quiz time.Quote: CroupierAnyone interested slap your name down here,
Trivia can be fun but sometimes its strange when I've never heard of the movies or the movie stars and everyone else in the bar knows just what is going on. I won't know anything about Paris Hilton, not even which roulette wheel she slumped over while drunk or something.
Quote: mkl654321Those three lands were Spanish territories when we annexed them after the Spanish-American war.
I dont think Texas was annexed, I think it was admitted by treaty. I want to say they are the only state admitted that way, which is why they can secede at any time. I knew my kids taking texas history would pay off.

The original Texas Republic was admitted by treaty. However, after the Civil War, the state of Texas was readmitted to the US by, in effect, popular vote, which included a loyalty oath and a pledge NOT to support secession, so if Texas had the right to secede before the Civil War, it didn't after it was readmitted.
