Well my wife and I decided not to go to Las Vegas.

I cancelled everything. The room at the Wynn, the car, the reserved parking spot at GTAA, and for the flight I'm getting credit.

Rumour was the same flight from WestJet yesterday flew with 12 people. My flight would have taken off as I'm writing this, but I'm not there. WestJet's Flight Attendant Union is talking about layoffs.

Buffets are closing, restaurants are closing, casinos are closing, shows and professional sports have gone dark. The local Maple Syrup Festival which has run for the last 50 years is cancelled.

The flip-side is that the "flattening the curve" crowd is saying we need to spread this out to save lives. Don't exceed our healthcare's capacity to deal with this pandemic. I concede that large crowds/isolating/social distancing will have an effect. Can you tell me how much? Can it be quantified? That way I can at least balance it against the costs of what we're doing.

We are doing serious economic damage in the name of "flattening the curve".

Lives matter, but economic damage has its consequences too:

Being from Kitchener, the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival was something to look forward to each year. How sad!

Yes, and a conversation examining the justification for doing so would be interesting. However, I don't think a candid discussion is possible on this forum without venturing into forbidden topics that shall not be named.

Great post. No one can be sure how effective 'flattening the curve ' will be. Also remember it is possible that with summer there will be a significant decline in new cases. So flattening the curve may also result in a significant decrease in the final number of cases.
I am retired so not concerned about work and income. AM concerned about savings (stocks) which I've planned on using.
Wife is a dentist. Probably the worst job to have now. She only works part time but I want her not to go in now. It will be a financial hit of course but we will be ok. Her assistants may not come in. So it may be moot.
Son number 1 is now working from home. (University of Florida)
Son number 2 goes to an office with the same 6 workers and sits on a computer (apparently with 3 big screens) all day. Surprisingly, he said he could not work from home unless his business provided him a much more powerful computer with multiple screens.

I'm very happy I am no longer working at my trauma hospital. It's always a mess with coughing, blood, etc.....

My wife works at a country school in the area and her school population is 80% Mennonite. The lack of the festival is going to hit them in the pocket book as it's a major source of sales for them.

I pretty much feel that I'm shouting in the wind. There is too much panic/fear/anxiety to see the other side of this and as you say any reasoned discussion in that environment isn't really possible.

We'll be OK too income-wise. There are those who might not be able to afford this pause. I feel like I'm downloading death onto the economically vulnerable with all these cancellations.

My eldest son works at a grocery store so he's seeing the panic first hand. They can't keep the toilet paper aisle stocked. They're also wiping down every handle in the store three times an hour.

My middle son works at a local restaurant and it's slow season so they're already cutting hours. This will make it worse.

My youngest is at a Sporting Goods store and traffic is way down and her hours are cut too.

Well I saw by the other threads that where I would have stayed -- the Wynn -- is closing tomorrow at 6PM for two weeks.

Everyone here is saying, "Now aren't you glad you didn't go?" to which my reply is, "Maybe".
