After 10 years of being at the top as the highest-grossing movie ever, “Avatar” has finally been dethroned by “Avengers: Endgame”! Have there been any other changes in the movie hierarchy? Let’s find out! http://bit.ly/33wCBfm
10. Furious 7 – $1.51 billion
Who could have thought that it would take this franchise 7 installments to get into the top 10? Furious 7 earned a whopping $1.5 billion at the box office!
9. The Avengers – $1.52 billion
Unlike DC’s Justice League, the first Avengers movie was a smashing hit, thanks to the foundation laid by Kevin Feige.
8. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope – $1.6 billion
Even though the entire original Star Wars trilogy was a huge success, “A New Hope” did it best. Back in the ’80s, it made $460 million, but after adjusting the ticket price and all that voodoo stuff, we get a nice and clean $1.6 billion mark.
7. Jurassic World – $1.67 billion
With a budget of $150 mil, Jurassic World made $1.672 billion, proving once and for all that once a dinosaur nerd – always a dinosaur nerd! Of course, casting the lovable Starlord aka Chris Pratt helped a little too.
6. Gone With The Wind – $1.82 billion
Gone With The Wind has been on this top-10 list ever since it was released in 1939.
5. Avengers: Infinity War – $2.05 billion
Funny how “Infinity War” with its $2.05 billion, is right in the middle of the list, “The Avengers” is almost and the end, and “Endgame”.
4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $2.07 billion
The first Star Wars trilogy was great, the prequels were mostly crap, and now the sequels are trying to get all your hard-earned nostalgia money.
3. Titanic – $2.19 billion
What’s there to say about the Titanic? There was this huge boat, it smashed into an iceberg, and sank, dragging thousands of passengers with it to the cold and dark abyss.
2. Avatar – $2.789 billion
How and why Cameron’s “Avatar” got so up high on the list is beyond me.
1. Avengers: Endgame – $2.8 billion
Yeah, that’s right, the new sheriff’s in town, Avatar, move aside! We knew that it was going to happen sooner than later and it did: Avengers Endgame dethroned Cameron’s Avatar fair and square (well, mostly), earning $2.8 billion! The 10 year-long buildup and tremendous $356 million budget, secured Marvel’s superiority once and for all. That is, until something even better comes up, like Avatar 2 or Avengers 5.
The same was true of Gone With The Wind, Star Wars, Titanic, Avengers -Infinity War and Endgame. For a period of time, the world revolved around them.
Quote: gordonm888One thing box office grosses do is reflect the excitement and interest about the film during the time it was released. Avatar was a tremendously exciting film - cover of Time magazine, headlines in newspapers, everyone was talking about it. Reading Rotten Tomatoes a decade later, its hard to comprehend how strongly the public reacted to the film.

Not at all.
Not that many people over 30 with an IQ over 80 care about something like a captian underpants movie. The world hardly revolves around these things. None of my family or friends really watch children's movies. Maybe you catch one here or there.
Titanic was different from the purely children's films. I did know people who saw and liked it. It had a very large presence for months. Everyone was aware of it.
Avatar was weird. Many people saw it, but I don't think that many really loved it. It didn't have the lingering impact of Star Wars. Nor was it as impactful during it's release as Titanic. I thought it was pretty good but not all that memorable. Seems like millions agreed.
One thing that is reflected is a willingness to see movies many times over. Adolescents do this, probably because they have some money, but very limited options, being under 21 and living with parents.
Also, most of these movies are spectacles, which are easier to rewatch than something driven mainly by story and character.
Titanic is an exception. The sinking was cool but most of it was story. However young women saw it again and again as it was the ultimate female fantasy: a guy who is way out of your league dies for you.

please put a bullet in my head if you every see me watching a superhero movie, sci-fi movie, or action movie.
Hehe.. from this statement, it appears that the boat may have gotten in the way of your recollection of the characters in the film.Quote: RigondeauxTitanic...young women saw it again and again as it was the ultimate female fantasy: a guy who is way out of your league dies for you.
What I take away from the list is that James Cameron has a good track record for making films that make huge amounts of money.
Paco has posted on this before, here and over at DT, that adjustments for inflation have an impact on the ranking, and if you look at total tickets sold, the top 10 list is different.
I enjoy superhero / action films. They are a pleasurable escape. Film makers have to go big in order to justify the high cost of tickets.

Huh? In my personal opinion, Leo is kind of a poof. But, according to the word's women, it seems he is one of the most attractive men alive. In the movie he is poor, but he is also an artist and an exciting guy, from a woman's POV.
Kate Winslet is pretty. But also kind of plain, by movie star standards. Her character didn't really bring all that much to the table as I recall.
Avatar was the movie version of Chinese Democracy. Everyone made it into such a huge story because it was supposed to be Cameron's masterpiece that he spent 20 years making.

It seems to one of the formulas in movies. Nerds getting hot girls, and plain women landing the hottest guy. Occasionally they make the match about even.
Then sometimes they have the morality twist. The average girl or guy realizes his or her average best friend was the right one all along.
You can finally read the goddang text and learn something; it's not blurred anymore.

No. Because of the times we live in it's unlikely that GWtW will ever be rereleased. Even the book is getting banned from libraries.
Not much of a movie person.
For the record, Rose was slumming and would never have left high society. She was also a selfish thing by a) feigning death and forcing her mother into poverty and b) ditching the diamond instead of giving it to the granddaughter who takes care of her.

I was never into superhero’s as a child, teenager or early 20-something.
But I’m now approaching 30’s, and recently have completely hooked on the Marvel movies.
I think there are way more 30+ viewers than you think.

It was shown in theaters earlier this year for its 80th Anniversary. I think it was limited to four showings per theater.
People want to believe nonsense such as that silly 'I've been with him too long to leave now'.Quote: Lovecomps

Think of the Estonia sinking: rapes, beatings, looting, theft of life preservers, etc.

???
I didn't see six of this until I was over 30.
With the exception of maybe Furious 7, every single one of these is for all ages.
I would probably rank all of the Marvel series. What do you think of their films? Avengers, iron man, panther, hulk....
