Why is Christmas still a Federal holiday?

It is a religious event, ostensibly to celebrate the birth of a religious figure, Jesus Christ.

What ever happened to keeping church and state separated?

It's time to get rid of it.

As an atheist and an anti-materialist I find no joy in Christmas, really, and as I think it through I conclude it should be abolished as a holiday and celebrated privately.

For 90% or so of the country, including most atheists, this is the most important day of the year to spend with family.

If you don't celebrate Christmas, you treat yourself to a Chinnese feast. Everybody wins!

If it is any consolation, a case can be made that our Christmas celebration is a mockery of the values of Jesus.

sounds like a Roman Catholic abortion on the truth to me.
and it is totally false.

what about Thanksgiving?

The US story of Turkey Day may all be a lie, but to give thanks on one day out of the year.
I say is the most important day of the year to spend with family

nice you have some good words to share. Too bad they are not true.

and G-d gets super angry when MAN does not do what G-d wants.
That is a riot!

so G-d kills (destroys) everyone (almost) and floods the earth.
then G-d still hates what he sees.
so
G-d still hates what he sees.
allows kids to starve every day and be sexually abused all their life
then they die and go where? Oh, G-d has His chosen people, so he hates them all differently
Great!
LOL

vote: get rid of Christmas as a federal holiday

A classic Christmas song croons,"It's the happiest time of the year." Technically, New Year's Day should be the happiest time of the year. A time to start over fresh and anew. And renounce the mistakes you made in the previous year. ;) Edit. Almost immediately after writing this post I am wondering if this is an inadvertent hijack. :/

There is a simple solution.

End the federal holiday.

Celebrate Christmas on Sunday, the same as Easter.

I agree. I am not sure what I am when it comes to religion. I have no beliefs nor do I care. However it does annoy me that they removed the pledge of allegiance because of God but xmas is okay. I guess it is only because it benefits them with another holiday

There is a simple solution.

End the federal holiday.

the reason 'Christmas day' is a Federal holiday is so the federal workers can get ANOTHER paid day off.

"the constitutionality of the legal holiday was not challenged until 1999. In her decision in Ganulin v. United States District Court Judge Susan J. Dlott concludes that a Christmas federal holiday does not violate the First Amendment of our Constitution: “By giving federal employees a paid vacation day on Christmas, the government is doing no more than recognizing the cultural significance of the holiday.”"

then the Judge says this
"The court will address

Plaintiff’s seasonal confusion

Erroneously believing Christmas

Merely a religious intrusion.

Whatever the reason

Constitutional or other

Christmas is not

An act of Big Brother!

Christmas is about joy

And giving and sharing

It is about the child within us "

More LIES about Christmas. Told by a Judge in the USA.
IF she did not lie, Then call it "Happy Joy Day" and NOT Christmas Day Federal paid holiday

No G-d, no worries, yes there is a G-d (damn it)
G-d says he hates LIARS and they will never enter the kingdom of heaven
so deal with it

"There is no state or Federal law requiring private employers to pay employees extra for working on a holidays, nor is there any law requiring employers to give employees paid time off for holidays."

"The Federal Government provides employees with ten paid holidays each year. Private sector employers may provide these holidays off with pay, holidays off without pay, or holiday pay for working on a holiday, but they are not necessarily required to offer any of these options. It depends on the employer's company policy regarding holidays."

what other
paid day off
will replace a taken away Christmas free pay day for all federal employees?

there are a few other want-to-be holidays that want to be Federal paid days waiting to be voted on and join the list.
1) César Chávez Day
Cesar Chavez Day is a U.S. federal commemorative holiday, proclaimed by President Barack Obama in 2014.
or maybe
2) Susan B. Anthony Day is a commemorative holiday to celebrate the birth of Susan B. Anthony and women's suffrage in the United States. The holiday is February 15—Anthony's birthday.

or maybe
3) 9/11 day. a Paid federal holiday

A few years ago, it was revealed that the Police Department of Malverne, a very small village on Long Island had about fifty paid holidays. Their contract said that if any Department anywhere gave a holiday, that Malverne got it as well. So the people of Malverne Long Island ended up paying to celebrate days like Alaska Day, Jefferson Davis Day, Colorado Statehood Day and many many more.

Christmas is horribly irrational. If there was any present I really wanted, I would have already bought it for myself. If there was anything I could give to someone else of significant value, they would have already got it for themselves. I do understand that we have the option to exchange gifts other than stuff we buy at the store. But if that was really the best option, why is shopping so much more popular in December than the other 11 months?

Haven't heard much about the War on Christmas this year. I guess everyone has finally realized that Jesus lost and consumerism won. Jesus was a homeless hippie who loved sinners and attacked the money changers. Christmas has pretty much become an affront to those values.

Christmas Sunday would make the most sense. How is possible that we know the exact date Jesus was born, but can only guess about the day he died? For any other celebrity with unknown dates, it is almost always the opposite.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone

Easter changes every year because it's based on the lunar calender. Christmas is a fixed date in the solar calendars.
In reality, we have no idea when Jesus was born. It makes some sense that a census would be held at the start of the new year, but Christmas simply replaced an already existing Roman holiday.
I support a year round Christmas.

May not have made it for that reason but certainly wont get rid of it because of that.

Do you feel any other reason that they outlawed the pledge but have not problem with xmas.

FWIW, I am all for xmas. Not the religious aspect of it but I love the entire season. Parties, gift giving, the excitement that it brings kids. I just disagree that it should be considered a federal holiday. I gave my employees today off as a paid holiday.

In theory, I agree with you. However, the Christmas genie is long since out of the bottle. Also, Christmas has become so secular that most people that I view the purpose of it as only about 10% religious in nature.

Again, I agree with you, but I choose to save my energy for battles I have some hope of winning.

If we were starting from scratch I'd vote against establishing a NEW holiday based on a religious figure. But I am quite content in CONTINUING the tradition of a federal holiday based on the birth of a religious figure. Similar to the Washington Redskins. Don't want them to have to change their name, but certainly would be against a new team in a different sport selecting Redskins as a moniker.

Thing is, at some point the name is the heritage. Example, there’s small towns named after natives (slang term not their actual name) whose bones are buried in the center of the city, and then local sports teams are named Indians after them. That’s also the towns history identity, and heritage too now they should they change it if someone uneducated about that wants them too. And that someone is usually just someone trying to be offended on behalf of someone else.....

Stuff like that.

My view is that Christmas should NOT be a federal holiday. Many companies give flex days that allow people with different religious views enjoy their holiday.

The thing is that Christmas is the dominant religion in the United States and most Western countries to the point where it would be difficult to staff mainstream businesses on that day.

I am Christian. But frankly I would just book the day off and if I had to work that day so be it.

If you don't want to celebrate Christmas then don't, and quit talking about it. Let everyone else have their fun.

In the end both are miserable because of their obsessions and are as annoying as hell.
