I love messing with scammers.
Me too. I once kept one of those 'This is Microsoft Technical Department' scammers on the phone for 45 minutes. Actually went through three of the scum on the same call. I now have a virtual machine dedicated to the task. Syskey brings up a meme of a foat-gucker and there is a workbook on the desktop called 'passwords.xls' It's full of obscenities. Command.com brings in a faked up prompt that mangles any commands he tries to enter. Other icons link straight to indian transexual porn.Quote: DRichI love messing with scammers.
While I'm wasting their time, they are giving some other poor sucker a break.
accent like most of them do. There are
hundreds of these videos on YT.

Good, but not great.
You really gotta draw it out and act really stupid. They’ll fall for it even harder because they think they got a big fish on the phone. Don’t say immediately the register number, but say you don’t know what the number is or where it is. They’ll describe where it is to you, and again, don’t act like you know. Say some number that’s way off, maybe add in a letter or two. Perhaps you need a minute to find your glasses, maybe there’s something you have to do in the middle of this (like clean up a quick spill, go to the bathroom and pee, etc.).
Every now and then, go off on a tangent. When you’re walking to the reloadit cards, mention how you’re almost out of beef jerky, oh wow, these young whippersnappers sure love their beef jerky, we didn’t have this quality stuff when I was a kid. But my grandma, yes, grandma Ethel would bring real jerky from her ranch in Texas. She always said it was deer jerky, but I dunno.....<continue>
Phone call should be at MINIMUM 30 minutes if not 90+ minutes.
When they ask for a number, don’t say “eleven twenty nine” but say “one two one nine....no sorry that’s two nine not one nine that’s one one nine two, again, one one two nine”. When the guy says “one one two nine?” you say “yes, one two two nine, that’s right, wait did you say one one two nine or one two two nine because it’s saying one <mumble mumble> nine”.
This second time the guy was acting very authoritatively towards me demanding to speak to the manager on duty and demanding to know my name. I answered the phone by giving my first name. The third time he demanded to know my last name in attempt to bully me I said "You don't need to know my last name. I know what your trying to do. Fudge off and die!" And immediately hung up on him.
Only I didn't say fudge.
Quote: cmlotitoThis was my 3rd call I have gotten this year. First one i got the guy hung up on me because I responded in a snarky voice to the question "I need to speak to the manager on duty. " " Why, I AM the manager on duty."

You've gotten three calls this YEAR.
I wish.
Since I've been staying at Mom's, I'm usually the one answering the phone. She gets 3-5 scammer/spammer calls a DAY. I'm including robocalls in that. They hit the elderly so hard down here, it's atrocious.
She gets calls from the police fund, the fireman fund, solar power salespeople, visa is insecure, computer has a virus, warranty expired on her car (she doesn't own one any more), air conditioner vents need cleaning, mold is IN your home, buy death benefits now, and a dozen others. Many are the kind where the computer calls first, then tries to switch you to a live salesperson since you were fool enough to answer, and I don't hang on long enough to find out who they are.
She's on every DNC list there is. We tell them all DO NOT EVER CALL AGAIN within the first 30 seconds. We never answer "yes" to anything, so they don't have a recording to fake permission, etc. But it just keeps on.
They must con billions out of the addled down here, or why would it be so frequent? A couple have been so persistent we have sent reports to the state AG, but that seems to affect nothing.
Any ideas?

Hi Babs,
Most of those callers are the scum of the earth: Criminals and parasites. I'd hang them up by their entrails and burn them.
But we are not allowed to do that, so the best we can do is damage their business model.
For your mom, it sounds like her number is also on some sucker lists too. A number change might be a good first step.
Getting caller Display and anonymous call reject is also pretty much essential.
Do your US telephony suppliers provide call filtering services? Here, we have a range of features available, some network based and some in the phone itself. See typical features here
The 'Truecall' feature is pretty neat "Block 100% nuisance calls: TrueCall technology ensures you don’t have to speak to nuisance callers again. Callers that aren’t on your contact list are asked to say their name and you can decide if you want to take the call."
You could achieve similar with an answering machine in loud speaker auto answer mode.
Sadly Mobile telephony providers don't seem to offer the same support to their customers.
The biggest problem for your mom may be your mom :( Older folk can be easy prey. You may have an uphill struggle training her. (been there, got the t-shirt)
Though it is a complete waste of your time, if you answer one, you can waste their time too. Doing so is a good deed for the day as every minute of their time you waste is a dent in their business model. If they robo call and say press one to speak to an agent, then they are trying to be efficient. I press one and then f++k with them to the max. Just never give them ANY true info and try to never say 'Yes' An easy foil is to pretend you are a moron. (I manage that well :o) Either ask them to repeat everything, or just, in fact repeat back to them the last few words of whatever they say.
My favourites are the Tech support scum. I was years in desktop support and I apply every dumb ass behaviour I ever encountered. It's usually 20 minutes at least before I eventually hand them remote control of my computer... and that is a messed up virtual Windows 7 machine on my Linux laptop. It's expendible, sandboxed and full of little treats for them.
Most successful retaliation was when I just kept insisting that my teamviewer only had the features needed to enter the access code of the computer to be controlled. Eventually he gave me the code with which I could remote in with full control of his pc. Filly sucker.

I work from home and have a land-line, and this thing has been a life-saver for me. I was a little skeptical at first but thought I'd give it a shot, and I'd estimate it has stopped 95%+ of the calls.
YMMV, of course!

I still have one. Well, it's OOMA. Does VoIP still count as a landline? The phone is plugged into the wall.Quote: SM777Landlines still exist? Wow.
I kept it to keep the number I have had for 20+ years. I still get maybe one call a year on it from an old (pre-cell phone) friend. We never answer it unless we are standing right in front of it when it rings and recognize the number (which is quite close to never). Everything else goes to voice mail. I'd say 90% of the calls are telemarketers, 9% scammers, and 1% people I want to hear from. Sometimes, Mrs. Joeman and I like to play a game of "Who left the message." These days, the odds-on favorite is Carnival Cruise Lines.
Babs, is letting everything go to voice mail a viable option? Perhaps answer it only if you recognize the caller.

Sorta. We've been getting a fair amount of calls from doctors, servicepeople, and insurance stuff, so it hasn't worked well to ignore the phone, but it can, I think.
She disconnected the answerer a couple months ago, I'm not sure why, but we could simply crank it back up and let it do the answering.
I have to admit, the total calls are down some. We were getting an additional 3 or so a day from pollsters and advocates for candidates for the 3 months before the election. Relief is relative.
who it is. I'll call them back if I feel
like it. Mostly not.. Send me a text
if you want my attention.
Quote: cmlotitoThe same dumb ass just called my store again a few minutes ago. After 3 minutes I think he figured out I was on to him and hung up on me when I kept asking what he wanted me to do. His presentation wasn't as polished as last time. I'll post it on you tube when I get home from work.
Bruh I told you how to handle them. Keep them on the line for 30+ minutes. I laid out all the tricks earlier in this thread.

Well, in my defense it was the same guy. I think he realized we had this same conversation before. I need to work on not being as aggressive when I talk. And definately use a different name for myself.

Yes aggressive, not sure why you have to be a d#$k to the nice man trying to scam you. (-;Quote: cmlotitoWell, in my defense it was the same guy. FYI, I enjoy these, let's see what you can come up with next time to mess with them. Act retarded or something next time.

Babs- that sucks - and elderly people are not "hip" to these phone scammers - hell, even middle-aged people can get taken if they are not sophisticated enough to know better - are these calls on a land line or cell phone? If on a cell phone, does the number appear or is it "Blocked" or "Private" - I would just keep blocking the number (if it is an actual phone number that shows up) on the cell phone (at least that particular number won't get through again) - I remember when the DNC list originally came out - I signed up and it seemed I then received more scam calls
Nobody I know that is my age or younger will even answer the phone anymore if they don't know who it is from the caller ID.
Quote: TigerWuI think these kinds of scammers are eventually going to die out.

This particular scammer will never die out as they target businesses. We, unfortunately, have to answer our phones.

A lot of Scammers spoof the name of the callers so that it says something like "Miami Water Corporation, "and when you pick it up it is a Scammer.
Everyone else can text me first if it's important

I never answer anybody who calls. I send
them a text. If I don't know the number
I block it. Calls have been reduced to
one a day on this almost new phone.
