The trivia contest will have an emphasis on gambling, but I'll throw in some general knowledge questions as well.

Fair enough. But knowing the kinds of questions you like to throw around, I should concede right now ;) As I recall I was mostly stumped with the waitress questions at the Rampart.

Yup, the train goes right by the MSS (Main Street Station). Thus its name, Main Street for the street it is on, and Station for at least looking like a train station and proximity to the former real train station.

Granted. But it's Vegas. I knew there were no real pyramids at the Luxor, or real canals at the Venetian.

However, the tracks may be difficult to access, to keep hobos off the trains. The adventurous among us will at least try!

We could just toss or throw coins and bet as to who can land one on the tracks. Of course we won't be able to retrieve them for souvenirs.

For the physical challenge I will do something like a running race around the parking lot following by a climb to the top floor of the MSS hotel. I reserve the right to add other components as well.

How about repetitive sets of elbow bending at the Triple-Seven Brew Pub?

He who retrieves the most flattened coins from the railroad tracks will determine whether the coins are wagered all at once or are subjected to a variety of hedging and other money-management techniques.

Who will contact MSS for the impression of special commemorative chips for the occasion? May I suggest the Flip Side of the commemorative banana cheques say "Double Up To Catch Up" in honor of Mr. Martingale.

Do they still have a piano upstairs at MSS? We will yank that Do Not Touch sign off the thing, stomp on it and then start playing gambling themed songs and drinking songs.

In that case I volunteer myself as official timekeeper. I will also document the event photographically and do a write up.

I have to object to that - I'm already firmed up to be in Vegas for the original dates. Maybe WOVcon II can relatively closely follow WOVcon I?

Sounds like a novel idea.

Perhaps one in June and another in December.

Maybe WoVCon will become a twice yearly event. Has to me once a year, if that for me, living in the UK.

Would be nice to get over more.

Oh, wouldn't it just?

Right now I get 13 days vacation per year. Vacation days are counted as weekdays only, so this means I get 2 weeks and 3 days. Eventually I'll top out at three full weeks (15 days). Even so, about the only time I can take off work due to the schedules we work under is between April and August. That's too short a time frame for more than one trip :(

On the other hand lots of you have expressed interest in sea-side Mexican resort towns.... No real gambling there.... Let me think about it, I may be having an idea.

Ok, I know Its early, but I thought it about time for a quick roll call. Stick in a quick post if you are attending, or if you are thinking of attending, or even if you are not as the poll seems to have stalled and I am curious as to the numbers after discussions in the WoVCon 1 - Whats going on? thread.

I heard this joke with John Wayne, but I suppose it works with any male celebrity:

The Duke walks up to a guy on the street and says "hey, buddy, are there any private bathrooms around here?"
The guy on the street says "No sir, Mr. Wayne, but there's a public bathroom in the casino over there. "
The Duke says "Goddamnit! I hate those freaking public bathrooms..." and walks into the casino.
5 minutes pass
The duke walks out soaking wet.
The guy on the street says "Holy shit! What happened to you?!?"
The Duke says "every time I go into those god damn public bathrooms it's the same thing: all the guys turn and start jumping up and down shouting 'it's John Wayne, it's John Wayne!'"

Quick bump. One morning a woman was walking out of her front door, when she notices a strange little man at the bottom of her garden.

"You're a goblin," she says, "I caught you and you owe me three wishes!". So the goblin replies "OK, you caught me fair and square, what's your first wish?". The woman stops and thinks for a second, "I want a huge mansion to live in.", goblins replies "OK, you've got it.". Woman again thinks it over, "My second wish is a Mercedes." "OK, you've got that too." "My last wish is a million dollars!". The goblin then says "OK, you've got it. But to make your wishes come true you have to have sex all night with me." "OK then, if that's what it takes..."

Next morning the little man wakes the woman up.

"Tell me," says the man, "how old are you?" "I'm 27", she replies

"Fuck me", says the man, "27 and you still believe in goblins"

*joke bump*

I managed to destroy my cell phone on a recent trip. On the way to KC, I lost the battery cover. Then on the way back to Minneapolis, I lost the battery. Figures. So I have a brand new snazzy cell phone. There's no physical keyboard on the new phone, and I expect that I'll mis-type somewhat more frequently on the new phone than I did on the old one. So I've promised myself that I'll give the predictive text on the phone a chance.

Today, I was adding an appointment and accidentally typed "brealfazt". Not too bad, but not accurate either. The phone did not suggest that I might have meant breakfast, or even "real fast" or "real faze." Instead, the only suggested correction was "breast fake." I thought the phone would only predict my text, but it seems that it also knows that I'm going to be in Vegas for WovCon in 2 weeks...

After futzing around with various options of SAT->LAS and a room, I'm flying Southwest at $240 and the MSS at $70 for two nights. The travel sites offered the ElCo at about $307 (thought that would be a good place, MKL liked it) but out of SAT those flights are at least 4.5 hour duration and it's probably better to book the room separately. Harrah's/TR might have been a free room, but this trip is downtown-centric and I probably won't stay on strip again in my lifetime anyway. All-in-all a better travel deal than I saw a month ago.

I hope some of the (I assume) locals like ME and JM will drop by the con.

I'll try to find an appropriate shirt.

Croupier: It appears that allenwalker should be added to the attendees list in the first post of the WoVCon Roll Call thread.

Is there anyone else missing from the list who should be included? Other locals who can make it in the afternoon?

Anyone in town early + locals:
Is there any interest in a pre-Con get together? This was mentioned previously in one of the threads, but I can't seem to keep the various threads straight. Perhaps a few of us could get together for dinner one evening? I understand that Ms. Croupier will be in town, and my wife will be with me, but I think rdw4potus said his significant other will not be making the trip. Are there other couples who will be around? Are there couples or singles that would like to try dinner together in the days before WoVCon? (Croupier, my wife and I are over 2.5 times your age, & I don't know whether you would consider that a barrier to such an invitation.)

My wife and I will arrive on Friday 6/10. She shows little/no interest in joining us on Wed. afternoon at MSS -- she thinks the outlet mall would be more fun for an afternoon.

I'm not going, but that describes my wife. She would rather do almost anything other than spending time with a bunch of gambler guys. She would go if I asked her, but she wouldn't like it. You'd think she was the nicest person you ever met, but it would be an illusion.

Ok then, after the Location poll results, the Venue has been changed to Main Street Station.

Date: Wednesday June 15th 2011
Location: Main Street Station, Downtown, Las Vegas, NV.
Meeting Place: 777 Brew Pub.
Time: 2pm.

I just wanted to quote this as a reminder. Here are some questions for the group:

1. Who is up for the physical challenge? Is after lunch a good time? I'll try to map out something before lunch but it will primarily involve running and stair climbing.
2. The following day the contents of the Sahara go on sale. Anybody interested in making a field trip there to check it out?
3. There is talk of a competitive eating challenge. For example, who could eat the most shrimp cocktails, or any other agreed-upon food easily available downtown. Any interest? I would not be participating in that one, but gofaster87 and JimMorrison expressed interest.

1. No, I'm not up to any likely physical challenge -- standing at a crap table long enough for a session leaves my back in pain. Call me perezoso. I'd be willing to watch, however. Schadenfreude.

2. Well, even my wife thinks that a field trip to the Sahara could be interesting. Count us in for that one.

3. Nope. Gorging challenges are just as unappealing as running/climbing challenges. I'd likely be up for one shrimp coctail, even one of the large ones, but that's enough for me. Again, I would be willing to watch los glotónes.

It's just one of the illusions that I sometimes perform. I think that I first learned the word Schadenfreude (which, it seems, is also an accepted word in English, cf. "hot cakes") from this cartoon.

I dunno, I can almost eat my weight in smoked salmon. Which, btw, if a buffet has it, its usually the most expensive item they offer. And I took the stairs at the Golden Nugget to get to the buffet once, instead of the escalator. Does that count?

I am reminded of a very large man I once worked with and his comments about the peppermint puff balls we had stocked in the office candy jar -- you know the ones, 2% sugar and 98% air. In talking about how they seemed to disappear once in the mouth, he kept trying to say the equivalent of, "I could eat a bushel of them." Unfortunately, it kept coming out like, "I could eat 20 pounds of them," and every time, he was annoyed that he had muffed it again and needed to revise his comment.

Bob, I don't visualize you as the hummingbird or bat or whatever creature it is that might actually be able to consume its own weight in food in a day.

Its called 'exaggerating for effect'. Like somebody saying 'I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.' Do you really ask them if they could? You must not get out much..

You're right, I don't get out much. But I'm in Vegas for WoVCon, and you're not. :-P

I'm not keeping up with the forum right now, because my only "computer" here is my cell phone, & this kind of post is awkward.

My wife & I did meet with Croupier & his for dinner & had a good time. I'll leave it to him to tel the tale of my very nearly passing out on Fremont Street (and completely sober!) Hoping to meet up with them again today for a trip out to Hoover Dam & the bridge. Unfortunately, getting in touch with each other has been a little bit of a challenge. More on that later, maybe.

WoVCon I was actually on 6/15 (day before yesterday), so unless we have a serious time-zone issue, maybe it's a good thing you weren't trying to attend. I just got home and caught a few hours sleep. I'm about to post a photo, so maybe discussions and comments about the actual event should move to a new thread. I think I'll call it "WoVCon I Wrap-up".
