I calculated 5 hours times 30 times 11 and got 1,650 hours, LMAO! 🤣🤭😀 But I wasn't working 5 hours a day every day however. 😏 But I often do 5 hours at my online marketing research job. 😏
I'd be more worried about the salt water corrosion that besets things built near the ocean shore. That was the cause of the demise of the Arecibo radio telescope, which is actually quite far from the shore, about 10 miles, but the salt mist it was continuously exposed to caused widespread corrosion of its mechanical support and it collapsed.
Ross, Rachel, and Monica order expensive appetizers, expensive entrees, wine, and dessert. At the end of the meal, Ross, Rachel, and Monica state that the six friends split the bill equally. Phoebe, Chandler, and Joey understandably protest, stating they only had cheap appetizers and water while Ross, Rachel, and Monica had the expensive food and wine.
I saw a video where a man goes to dinner with his best friend and her friends and he orders cheap food and soda I believe it was and she and her friends ordered expensive food and wine. They got into an argument because he didn't want to split the bill equally paying more money than what he ordered. He said he and his best friend stopped being friends because of this incident.
Splitting the bill equally when equal food and drinks weren't had is a bad idea in my and many other people's opinions. Separate bills is the way to go where everybody pays for what they ordered and not for anybody else.
If someone had a burger, fries, and a soda that is around $20 including tax and tip, they would feel VERY resentful being asked to split equally a $500 bill with people who had fried calamari, chicken tenders and fries, a bone in rib eye steak with fries and broccoli, soda, and a brookie.
The one who ordered the cheap meal gets to majorly overpay and the people who ordered the expensive meal gets a huge discount. The one who ordered the cheap meal would be resentful whereas the people who ordered the expensive meal would be happy. To avoid any resentment, separate bills is the way to go. 💡

It was in the 90s, and NYC had a restaurant week where lunches were $19.97 or $19.98. We go to a fancy spot I'd never be able to afford, and as we order lunch, my friend orders a hundred-dollar bottle of wine. The sister doesn't drink, and I'm not a wine drinker, but he doesn't notice. It's a nice enough lunch, but the sister spoke limited English, and we weren't a match. She was gorgeous but she wasn't interested. As we finish up and I'm preparing to call it a day, my friend orders another bottle of wine- this one was $125 and he then orders a dessert tray- a sample of about a dozen different desserts -for $99. I expected to pay for the sister even though we weren't together, but I refused to split the $325 in wines and desserts. I gave him $80 or $90, and our friendship never recovered.

Yep, restaurant meals cost have caused friendships to end like your and your ex friend's did and the guy and his best friend's did. Separate bills are a must. If anything, your friend should have paid the entire bill since HE was the one who actually ordered all the expensive food and drinks. 💡
I was surprised places would do that, but they do.

I personally don't know any restaurant that splits food equally but bills drinks individually however. All the Restaurants I go to, food and drinks are equally on the same check.💡

I'm going to answer another part of your post. The Friend didn't notice that neither you or his girlfriend's Sister actually didn't drink/enjoy any of the expensive wine? 😐 What a wonderful Friend that guy was. 😐
One couple we go out with a lot always drinks way more than we do. There have been times it’s egregious enough that they want to pay more than half, so they will ‘double tip’ and we won’t tip.
But as a standard, we split it down the middle. It doesn’t really make up for it, but this friend will always pay for my hot dog/soda ‘at the turn’ whenever we golf.
One other friend will always ask for a separate check. I’m fine with that too.
Quote: WizardI've always wondered how much additional fuss it is for the waitress to do separate checks. Personally, I don't want to give them any extra work so favor "one check" with everyone being on the honor system to put in according to how much they ordered.

I've been to Vegas meetups where the honor system left the person holding the bill quite short, and some where everyone paid enough that the waitress got a spectacular tip.

Good point. I've seen both many times. Usually too much money is the problem. In that case, the person holding the check has every right to ask for more money or to offer some back to whoever feels they were overly generous.

Isn't the best way to b it down be say $500 meal before tax and tip.
Max had the $50 ribeye steak and fries.
He had a glass of Pinot Grigio for $15
He had a $10 chocolate cake with ice cream.
Charlie had a $70 rack of lamb and potatoes.
He had a $10 au gratin dish
He had a glass of Chardonnay for $13.
Jim had fried calamari for $13
He had duck l'orange with wild rice for $40
He had a Pepsi for $5
Jerry had beef Wellington and mashed potatoes for $50.
He had a glass of Moscato for $12.
He had a Brookie for $10.
Rick had fried mozzarella cheese sticks for $11
He had Cornish hen and black rice for $20.
He had a glass of red sangria for $10
Thomas had the sirloin and lobster tail for $70
He had oysters and garlic butter dip for $20.
He had a glass of Hurricane for $11
Martin had a bowl of clam chowder soup for $10
He had the t-bone steak and loaded baked potato for $30.
He had a Bahama Mama for $10
He had a bowl of vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge syrup and chocolate chip cookie or $10
Everybody had free water and free bread. The $500 bill is split so that everybody evenly pays for what he ate and drank and tax is $35. Everybody pays $7 for the tax. The tip at 20 percent is $107. Everybody pays roughly $15 each for the tip.
😀💡
By the way, if it's anyone's birthday they don't have to pay. I'm told in Germany it's the opposite and the birthday boy is supposed to pay for everyone.
Quote: WizardAs a mathematician, I seem to be often designated to "figure out the check." I take it as a compliment. In your example with a $500 check and seven people I would add 20% for the tip and then divide by 7. Then I would say, "If we divided this equally, then everyone would owe $86. However, adjust from there according to what you think is fair according to what you ordered. Keep in mind alcoholic beverages are expensive." Hopefully I would get enough, but would have no compunction to ask for more or give back some if the pot didn't have close to $600.
By the way, if it's anyone's birthday they don't have to pay. I'm told in Germany it's the opposite and the birthday boy is supposed to pay for everyone.

The "Evenly," meaning everybody pays $86 is what causes arguments over the bill. For example, Rick who had the Cornish hen and black rice, mozzarella cheese sticks, and red sangria only ordered $41 worth of food and drink and didn't even order any dessert will not want to pay $86. 💡
Quote: billryanI'm going to guess the date didn't end in sex. A man pays for a woman's meal, not for her company during the meal, but for what may happen after the meal.
link to original post
He did imply that he would pay for her meal if she had sex with him. When she refused, he questioned how she was going to get home. Turns out, he picked her up from her house and drove her to the restaurant. 💡 Posters were disgusted in his,"Have sex with me or I will not take you back home," since he was the one who drove her there. They stated that it's just plain bad to only offer to pay a woman's meal if she's going to have sex with you and if she refuses you don't take her back home when you drove her there. 💡
Think of it as like a gratuity, but for those you are dining with. If you don't have a problem with a gratuity for the waitress, why not? That word gratuity, comes from L. gratia meaning grace, something that you received but did not earn. That is a religious concept in some instances. We also use it in the word "gratuitous," but that word can have a negative connotation because we are usually using it in the phrases "gratuitous insult" or "gratuitous violence." In that case it means undeserved and uncalled for. "Gratuity" meaning a tip for a worker is no longer considered unearned, because of the system in which we are paying tipped workers now, but that older term remains.
So what happens if I pay this gratuity to the group?
1) Someone might have shorted the group, due to a miscalculation or just lack of money, and now they don't have to feel embarrassed or called out because there is enough money in the pool.
2) The waitress gets a big tip and is happy to see us next time. Maybe she will bring us extra stuff!
3) Somebody says "Wait we have too much. Did you put in too much? Here take this back..."
Which of those outcomes is bad? Which of those outcomes should I be willing to risk conflict to avoid?

Other than AP’s and a few others involved in money laundering activities, who uses cash instead of a credit card to pay for anything? I think I have around 15 Marriott nights and 10 Southwest flights accrued for not using cash.
I don’t think waitresses care about splitting a check at all.
He felt uncomfortable and harassed and luckily a Casino Staff Member was doing the rounds and saw the uncomfortable situation and the winner gave the Casino Staff Member a "These guys are making me feel uncomfortable and harassed, please help me out!" Expression.
It was clear that these two burly men were making an uncomfortable sandwich with the Winner being the uncomfortable sandwich filling and the burly men being the bread. It was obvious what was happening since he had just publicly won $500 in free play in a Casino and looked uncomfortable with these two burly men surrounding him. And the burly men weren't gambling.
The Casino Staff Member asked the burly men to get away from the Winner and they did. The Winner admitted to the Casino Staff Member that those two burly men were making him feel uncomfortable and harassed and he thanked the Casino Staff Member for getting them away from him and tipped the Casino Staff Member a $20 for helping him out.

What do you guys think? Was I right to feel resentful over the guy not offering me any of his $500 in free play for helping him out? 💡🤔

If a man or woman soils themselves in a casino, walk away. The fact that you tried to help out a mentally unstable person should be its own reward. Did you look at the situation and see a person who needed help, or did you see a person you might get some money from if you play nice with him?
You did a nice thing. Please don't ruin it by looking to get paid for it.

Oldest trick in the book. The slot attendant brings in two burly gentlemen(nephews, no doubt) to harass free play winners and then rescues the winner, earning a nice tip in the process. It's a win-win situation. Either the Burly Men get a free meal and toss the Slot attendant a kickback for their two free meals, or the SA kicks back some of the $20 tip to the Burly Men.

My opinion: just like you are not really a hockey player as long as you have 32 teeth, you are not really an AP until you've had an Alan Shepard "Do it in the suit!" moment because the +EV was too good to leave the table. Anyone can pocket a win; enduring the tragedies en route is what proves your mettle.
Not the only time I've had urine on me in a casino. One time I'm playing, and next to me at the table was an elderly man, and I think in no condition where he should be unattended. But there he was, and he fell out of his chair. I got up to pick him up and put him back in his chair, and he had urinated and it was all over me.
What did I do? I had a positive count and deep pen, only one thing I could do- keep spreading!

On another Website, I did mention the fact that maybe the Casino Staff Member was actually in on the harassing and splits the tips with the burly men and probably does this everytime there is a big winner in a Casino drawing. Posters responded something like, "Your Theory makes sense in theory, but in reality, Casino Management would soon get VERY suspicious of the SAME Casino Staff Member making the rounds and just happening to be near the two burly men and the Casino drawing winner.
Also, I question why the two burly men are A, not only harassing someone who only won $500 in free play and not in cash, he most likely will get about $200 in cash, and B, why they were harassing a complete Stranger for dinner and not harassing him for say $20 cash for each of them for whatever cash he got. A lot of people won't buy a complete Stranger dinner, but will give them some cash in order to get them to leave them alone. "
