Okay, now it's the time for talking about animals, which can be really close to your heart (pets), but some of you can really afraid of them. Are there animals which you really are afraid of? Or is there something that you love? Do you have any pets? Want to tell us about it/them?

I inherited my 90 pound goldendoodle from my mother when she passed away two and a half years ago. Bailey turned ten in March and is fit as a five year old. He still enjoys playing at the park and his best playmate is a 100 pound mastiff boxer mix. They'll wrestle each other to the point of exhaustion.

I have a 5 year old dachund black-lab mix that I adopted last year.

Someone dropped this adorable bundle of fuzz off at the pound not once, but twice. I have no clue why, she was super well behaved from the moment we got her.

I totally love dogs, to the point I disowned the Steelers literally the minute they signed Vick. I am sadly not able to keep one as I am gone from home way too much. When I had to live with family a few years back my mother had a super smart Chocolate Lab that loved the water and had the strongest fetching instinct I ever saw or heard of.

Had the dog at the river near a boat ramp once. It is hard to explain but she would do this dive thing into the water. I am there just MYOB and some guy is there with a German Shorthair, and I can tell he is a hunter trying to train it for hunting. I'm paying them no real mind except to be situationally aware there is another dog around. I am not all that worried on my end as this Lab was so focused that WWIII could break out over there and she would just yelp for me to throw the stick.

Well, the Shorthair wants no part of the water. Guy is coaching his young daughter to coax it in. Meanwhile here I am with a dog I can't keep out. He looks over and says, "Come on, you can do it, look at that dog!" to his dog.

After a minute of so I can *feel* this guy's mind saying, "holy cow, I gotta get a closer look at this!" He comes over and we chat. Nice guy, I forget exactly what we talked about but I got this fairly often. My answer was stock, "what can I tell ya, the dog loves the water?"

Yes, Labs like the water, but not like this one did.

Beware of pet sitting services. One woman heard (in rehab or jail or something) that it was a good way to make money but she left five dogs in a station wagon in the hot sun all day long as she enjoyed her favorite air conditioned bar.

I had a cat that might have been lost but probably was simply turned loose to fend for herself. Her rescuer had too many dogs to have a cat in her house or yard so I got a long term cat sitting gig and the cat became my primary care provider since she seemed to have already learned what too much and too little blood sugar meant in a human. I often wish I were worthy of having pets.

I am not going to defend what Vick did, mainly because it was indefensible. But, by all accounts, he was the proverbial "changed man" after prison. He worked with the Humane Society to help stop dog fighting in the inner cities, and lobbied Congress for tougher dog fighting laws. Do you still hold it against him even though he is now (or was) an agent for preventing/eliminating dog fighting?

Yeah, I know I may be naive, and this could all be an act. For all I know, when his court ordered community service was up, he may have gone back to his old ways. He hasn't been in the news, so who knows? But, you cannot deny that he did some tangible good in the HSUS's fight against dog fighting.

If there is any indication that he is ever involved again in his former activities, I will be right there next to you on the Anti-Vick bandwagon. But for now, as I have no evidence to the contrary, I will choose to believe he has changed. If that just makes me an optimistic fool, I can live with that.

I am a dog owner, and like I said, his involvement in dog fighting was reprehensible and indefensible. But was it unforgivable?

Yes, I still hold it against him. This was not some 20 year old at one dog fight. This was a grown man who ran a dogfighting ring. Everyone has their line and standards. How about if Jerry Sandusky was released and worked against sexual abuse of young boys? Walter White had he lived and worked against meth addiction? (I know he is fake, just roll with it.)

What really irks me is that the NFL told Limbaugh not to even bother applying as a minority partner as he was "divisive" and they wanted to protect their image. Then Vick gets a mere 4 game suspension!

First, I think Sandusky's crimes were magnitudes worse then Vick's. But, if he was released (Wikipedia says his earliest parole eligibility will be when he is 98), and used the time he had left on this earth to prevent further abuse, I would applaud his efforts. But I take your point. I still wouldn't let him near my kid.

Rhodesian Ridgeback. Reckon I tell him I'm going to cut his f#$%ing head off minimum 5 times a day. The most willfully defiant being I have ever run across. Sumbish chased down an adult rabbit just yesterday and had from the shoulder up gone before I got to him. About as fast as lightning and equal as easy to catch.

Loves to run, fight the neighborhood dogs, go fishing, and eat all the woodland feces he can find. Also, he's really good at finding woodland feces.

I feel your pain....here is what the author E.B. White had to say about dachunds

Quote:

Being the owner of dachshunds, to me a book on dog discipline becomes a volume of inspired humor. Every sentence is a riot. Some day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the dachshund and why he can't be trained and shouldn't be. I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a dachshund to heed my slightest command. When I address Fred I never have to raise either my voice or my hopes. He even disobeys me when I instruct him in something he wants to do.

Our girl barked quite a bit, and we got a bark collar that senses when she barks and beeps/vibrates. It put an end to it immediately.

They make versions that have a remote control so you can trigger it manually as well.

She is also a really hard puller on the leash, and a choke collar helped that a good bit. She’s never been a chewer though.

You may also want to look into clicker training. You use a little clicker device and associate the noise with a treat. It takes a lot of time and patience, but eventually they perk right up and listen when they hear the click.

First, you have to figure out what kind of dog he is.

I took a dog training course from this guy last month named Joel Silverman (Google him + dog training; he sells books, videos, and accessories on the website, very reasonable prices. I don't want to do an ad for him, so just look him up yourself, please). He divides dogs into categories by color.

They are motivated by different things. Some dogs like treats and respond well to those. Some like other things. It depends on what "color" they are what would be most effective.

Chances are, you're going to need a kennel to give him a safe space and USE it.

You're going to need a Martingale type collar to train him with. You'll need to correct the bad behavior firmly but not meanly while it's happening, using the collar. The best ones are part leather or nylon, part chain.

You're going to have to figure out what reward he needs when he gets it right. And spend 5 minutes a couple times a day, minimum, teaching him in VERY small steps how to please you .

If you use an e-collar, you'll need to do a lot of research on how to use it right or you'll ruin him. It should prompt him, not hurt him. It's not an instant, zap him tool and the problem is fixed. The key is that he cares what you want, and the e-collar is a reminder.

The main problem you have is likely that he's insecure and guarding you, and owning the house, when you should be in charge, and your things are his things at the moment. He needs boundaries and a boss, but not one that intimidates or hurts him, just one that masters him. Comes from trust.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Hello guys, just an update when I was searching online for a collar I saw these dog training collars, it says that it is one of the most useful tools used for training dogs. It is good to correct bad habits of a dog such as barking too much, digging, and chewing. it also says that a training collar can transform a misbehave dog into a well obedient dog. I heard other people who are against it and question the safety of this product, but, I think it is safe to use for both the dog and the trainer. What do you think about the training collar overall, will it help me train my dogs? I'm open for more suggestions, though.

A podcast I listen to the guy says one key is the dog should not connect you to the shock. Keep the trigger hidden, when the dog looks at you, be looking somewhere else.

I have heard mixed results with some against it. But those against are almost all female who think you are "being mean to the dog." As others said before, train yourself first, then train the dog.

A training collar is a tool. If the person using the tool doesn't know how to use the tool properly, the end result suffers. You should be able to find a trainer who will give you the in and outs of the tool in an hour. Used correctly, they can be a great training tool. Abuse it and you'll make an enemy you really don't want.

I guess, if you're going to depend on the collar, I would suggest NOT the static one. That's like tasing him all the time. Maybe the sound or vibration, and the idea is to use the LOWEST setting the dog responds to.

I think your money is better spent on a crate, a correction collar like I discussed above, and a paid hour with a pro trainer, who can show you how to get the dog to focus on you in that time . Since you asked.

And your time is better spent on building a positive relationship with the dog. He will be much easier to train if he cares what you think. If you spend a good amount of time with him, even several times a day for 5 minutes each, without distractions, and just concentrate on him learning to like and listen to you, it will go a lot further than any collar.

I certainly don't recommend a shock collar in most cases, but a clueless owner and a juvenile rott are a toxic combo and he obviously doesn't want to take the time and money to educate and train the dog so we go with Plan G.

I had a shock collar, it had six settings of intensity and it also came with a dummy collar. So the dog would get used to wearing it. There are a few tricks to getting the best use out of them.

One thing they won't do, is train the dog themselves. Probably get your best results if you have taken and obedience course first.

What it did for my dog was give him two extra years of his life. Living in the country, the most important thing you can teach your dog is "come". Everything else seems to pale to that command. I wouldn't have a dog that I couldn't call off of a deer, moose or car he wanted to chase.

If you really want to train a dog, giving treats sucks as a method. Spoils the animal, and the first time it has something more interesting than eating that it wants to do, it will ignore you.

My son and I even tried out the collar by taking turns shocking each other [on the hand], we could take up to setting 4, but #5 would make you want to pee your pants. Good tool, but training a dog [which makes it ten times the pet] takes the secret ingredient.....time. It takes time and patience. Similar to training children.

As a tool, I think it works like spanking a child. If you do it a few times when they are little, you won't have to do it when they are bigger than you. ymmv

Bill,

Warning. You are trolling the guy a couple times now. He seems to be honestly asking for advice, so just give it without the aspersions. Thank you.

FWIW, I happen to agree with the advice you're giving, but back off some.

I tend to prefer cats also and even has one that I referred to as my Primary Care Provider, but I've had dogs in the home also. I have one electronic acquaintance whose favorite pets are rats. I think its all the same emotions and concerns.

I don't think I'm trolling him. I think I am trying to make him aware of the potential for very bad things to happen if he keeps doing what he has been doing. In any event, I am bowing out. I hope he and his dog get the help they need and everything is all blue skies.

I personally think a shock collar on a dog is a bad idea. You(I am talking in general, not in specific) are literally shocking the dog and that could lead to him becoming very aggressive to you and just plain aggressive in general. I think a better method is to reward him with affection for doing a good job while being trained. For example, you say "Sit," he sits and you hug him. If he won't sit, sit down yourself multiple times so that he will mimic you. I heard dogs will mimic what their owner is doing. Whatever you want him to do, do it yourself and he will do it too. If you want him to roll, you get on the floor and roll around as if you are a little kid learning the basics of gymnastics . They are like furry children who do what "Mommy" and "Daddy," do since they look up to their owners.

I put a thank you on the post you didn't call him clueless or anything else, above. The other 2 times were the one I quoted and the one before the thank you post with similar phrasing. Just informing you what I'm referring to, not trying to extend an argument.

Do they come with their own nuclear reactors? Perhaps a lead enabling plugging in directly to the sun? Cuz if they do, I'll take two. Just something that will do to my dog what Randy Johnson did to that pigeon

I drove around the country in an RV with my cats for many years, and I let them out everywhere I went! Here are some tales of the times they didn't come back right away:

I still have Flick + Flash... here's a funny little video of Flash giving me a dirty look:
