I would really love to get a lot of the regulars and the lurkers on the site together, at least for a drink. Me not being in the US, nevermind a native Las Vegan, would make it difficult to arrange ad hoc.

Now as I have already booked next years Vegas Vacation for June 8-22nd, and would like to start thinking about co-ordinating a get together now. I will freely admit that meeting the Wiz on my last trip was a highlight, and whilst I was a less than perfect guest, being in awe of the prescence of greatness, I thoroughly enjoyed spending the day with him.

So here is what I propose - A WOV convention of sorts (hereby known as WOV-Con until someone comes up with a better name or the idea dies). This is so far all I have come up with, and the planning needs a lot of work. But I believe if we start planning now we could possibly get a great event going, and possibly the first of many.

The only thing I have fixed from my personal view is the dates, as it is all booked and paid for already.

So I posted this poll to see the general response, and this thread for suggestions and preliminary planning if the enthusiasm is high enough.

I look forward to your thoughts.

EDIT - and lurkers, please vote, even if you dont want to leave a post, I want an idea of how the majority of the community feels towards this.

I like the idea. I'll pencil it in for my next trip. My visit with the Wizard (and Nareed) last trip was a highlight, too. I like the idea of doing regional meetups, too. (Have arranged two so far, although just two people each at both. Still fun.)

Not to hijack the thread entirely, but who's going to be in LV for G2E this year?

Aww - I just booked what's turning into the "yearly Vegas trip" with my gambling buddies last week, but we set it for early March. One of the guys in our group is in grad school, so we fit it around his spring break.

Dang. Sounds like an awesome idea, though!

My next LV visit will be in mid-December. (Anyone else expect to be around then?) I don't usually plan my travels so far into the future as next June, so I cannot comment on whether I could actually make it then. In my opinion, the weather in Las Vegas for the whole June-September period is just too dang hot for my preferences -- for 2010, my visits were/will be in January, April-May, and December, with casino ventures elsewhere in the summer months. Even Mississippi can be bearable in the summer, if you can avoid the skeeters.

I know a lot of people wont be able to make it specifically next June. I just threw those dates out there as an example, me being in town. I wouldnt be arrogant enough to assume that everything would centre around my visit.

What I was really after is knowing if people would be up for a large(er) scale meet up. I am just trying to get the ball rolling.

So here is what I propose - A WOV convention of sorts (hereby known as WOV-Con until someone comes up with a better name or the idea dies).

I'd love to. I can easily make it in June. I've been going to Vegas in May the past three years, but I can switch to June without much trouble (actually I'd preffer April, but that's clearly not available....)

Now, your time frame is quite large. First we'd need to set a specific day or couple of days. I typically spend a week in Vegas (though I get two week's vacation). I'd suggest a weekday. Next we need an approximate head count. With that we can think what to do next.

For now I suppose it'd be enough to just meet for lunch and maybe a little gambling afterwards, much like the Wizard's Coffees have gone (hey, how about Wizard's Coffee Con?). I'd proppose meeting either on the Strip or Downtown, as these are the most easily accessible parts of town. But of course these are not the best places to gamble. You can't have everything. That would be great if we could get five to ten people together.

We might also schedule a visit to some local attraction not often visited by tourists. When I met teddys and the Wizard, teddys and I later went to the Pinball Hall of Fame (well worth the visit). Something along those lines, though I can't think of anything bur the said Hall of Fame and the Atomic Energy Museum (aorth visiting once). Stuff like Hoover Dam or Red Rock Cannyon are more a day's worth kind of trip. It's worth thinking about.

Personally I wouldn't mind traveling somewhat off-Strip/Downtown. Say if we met at the Boulder Strip or even at the M hotel. I don't rent a car in vegas, but I figure I can either hitch a ride with someone or travel by bus and/or free shuttle somewhere clsoe and then get a cab. Cities are easy to get around with a little information and some money.

I agree with teddys that meetings like these are the highlight of a Vegas trip (unless, I suppose, if you hit a relly big jackpot). I travel alone and it's a nice change of pace to actually meet people and have an interesting conversation with them.

The exact dates have not been set yet, but I'm planning to be on a mountaineering trip for about two weeks in June. I'm hoping to summit Mt. Shasta, Hood, and Rainier. I'm not leading the trip, so don't have any control over the dates. Due to weather conditions, there is a narrow window for doing Rainier safely every year.

If I'm around, of course, I'll make it. If not, please go ahead without me. I should know the exact dates later this month.

I hope you're going in LATE June, as you can't count on the weather on Hood or Rainier until the second half of June. I canceled a camping trip to Rainier on June 12, because it was raining down at the base, and SNOWING at 4,000 feet. The sun did consent to make an appearance the next week, and the temperature shot up to 80.

Well with 7 positive responses, it looks like this may be something to go ahead with. Once the Wizard knows his dates, I think we should consider pushing forward with the details. You never know, once we get things a little more formalised we may even attract more people.

Am bumping this just to see if there is any more tentative interest.
