It was probably just someone who was 90 years old in the refunds department... and they're also upset that you never call.
p.s. I'd frame it and keep it. Sure as hell ain't worth cashing.

I closed my Etrade account years ago and for some reason they continue to send me statements showing I have a one penny balance.

Had this happen years ago with moving an IRA to a different brokerage. For some reason, they moved all but $1 out of the old account. It may be that the new brokerage couldn't "close out" my old account, and I'd have had to go down to the old brokerage (actually a bank) and close it out myself. For $1, it was never worth my time to go there. I wasn't very happy with the bank at that time anyway, which was why I moved my accounts. So, I wasn't going to do them any favors.Quote: JohnzimboI closed my Etrade account years ago and for some reason they continue to send me statements showing I have a one penny balance.
The bank still sent me statements quarterly, and it turned out that the $1 was still earning interest in a money market account! About 4 years ago, they finally got fed up, closed the account on their own, and sent me a check... for $1.43.

If you can get old bank records from parents or grandparents who were writing checks in the 50s or earlier, you see a lot written for about a dollar
the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!” She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder

In business class in high school (late 1970s), I was taught how to write a check for an amount less than $1.
To write a check for 69 cents, put "69c" as the number, circle it, and put "Only Sixty-Nine Cents" as the written amount.
There is also an episode of The Simpsons where Bart writes checks for amounts like 25 cents, mainly to get other people's signatures.

As my father was in the Army, we moved a lot. A school I went to in fifth and sixth grade used to send a banker to the school on Wednesdays. Class by class would go out to the table he set up in the hall and make our deposits. Most were for around a quarter, except at Christmas and birthday weeks. If you made deposits x amount of weeks, you got a certificate indicating you were a dedicated saver, and the class with the most participants got a party at the end of the year. I don't know about the rest of the class, but this turned me into a lifetime saver. I was amazed that kids in fifth grade had balances of a hundred dollars or more. One kid had almost four hundred dollars saved. I had nothing when I started.

Bill, that program was brilliant...we need more basic financial education in K-12 Public Education. No one advocates out for it, but it is the stuff that every American needs to be more fiscally educated and therefore able to be financially responsible.
Instead the media clamors over losing art, music, drama class and other "cultural education" programs in our public schools...meh.
