Browsing and opening apps is faster
I had no issues with anything not working
The layout and use is way better than Windows 8 (I was still on WIndows 7 but have used Windows 8)
Windows 10 is much smaller than my previous windows It free up a lot of hard drive space.
You will lose the Windows Media player, which I guess they discontinued, but I didn't care since I used a different free app for that kind of thing.
I give it thumbs up. And it's free for Windows 7 & 8 users for it's first 12 months. If you don't upgrade during that time, then they are going to start charging for it.

What am I missing?
Quote: texasplumrAdmittedly, I'm kind of a Luddite. I'm perfectly happy with Windows 7. Why should I *upgrade*? I don't see the need since I'm happy with it on my laptop.
What am I missing?
One reason I am looking at the upgrade is the extra years of support. I think 7 will be supported until 2020 and 10 will be supported until at least 2025.
I am still a bit pensive though, I keep thinking of the Kingsmen movie and my past experiences using Vista.

I can't imagine what 10 does that 7 doesn't
on my desktop. A I use Windows Media Player.
I did like the fact I don't have to keep a floppy of drivers for my network card which I had to do all the time in windows 98. Other then that I haven't really seen a reason to upgrade, especially if you have to pay for it.
Quote: djatcNever understood the point if upgrading an OS. I'm not a computer whiz and only use it to watch movies and play games but windows xp was working just fine for me until I bought a new laptop with windows 7 on it. First thing I do is to change the settings to classic, so I can always have the interface I am familiar with.

The biggest reason to stay somewhat current with an OS is the support you get via firmware upgrades. As millions of users use an OS, bugs and other unwanted aspects of the software will be identified. These upgrades tend to fix (Or create new problems, yay) these issues.
That being said, after building a $3,000 gaming computer, I have no interest in going from W7 to W10 right now. It does what I want it to. Though in a year or two, when I'm more interested, I'll upgrade it.
Not a fan of W8 at all. Dealt with it on Microsoft tablets, and it was amazing. On a desktop without a touch screen, garbage.

There isn't one, it's always a marketing ploy. I'm
using 8 right now and am used to it and it's fine.
Screw 10.
I have a 17" I5 entertainment 4GB notebook and other laptops and tablets (to many) but I want to migrate to something more portable that's as good as my laptop or better than my laptop. I don't really game or video edit, but I still want something fairly fast.
I have been searching online but there's so many and I cant seem find everything i'm looking for, for about $550 or lower. I seen a few a while back, but I forget what they were. I would spend more if the specs were worth it.
I'm not willing to spend 1k+ on something I really didn't need.
Any suggestions would be great. Surface pro 3, I felt was to expensive and the keyboard sucks.
Quote: AxelWolfI'm looking for a detachable 2 in 1 tablet laptop. 11." 13" Screen I'm set on detachable and Windows. I3 + 4th gen quad core, 4MB , 4GBor better. AMD is fine if its comparable

Are you firmly set on a 2 in 1?
Because for 1k you can get a very decent laptop and tablet separate.
You can get a very good laptop for 600-800 (if you don't game or edit, 600 dollar range would be perfect for your purposes), and a great tablet for 200-400. And, then just use them individually as needed.
I am not saying 2 in 1s are a bad choice, but I don't understand the appeal. I have never been in a scenario where they would be helpful, laptops are easy enough to carry around, and you can bring your tablet for portable entertainment.
2 in 1s just seem like an excuse to overcharge for subpar hardware.
But for sure you should skip the surface pro 3, way too expensive for what you get (unless you can find a used one online for a good price).
Have you considered a netbook? It sounds like it may be a good option for you. Very portable, very cheap, and very easy to use, they are perfect if you are just doing basic stuff. And, they are generally a fraction of the price of a 2 in 1.

Note also competing products from ASUS, HP, and others in that same price range.
At less than 1.5 lbs, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB HD, Bluetooth, it should have pretty much everything you need.
EDIT: OfficeDepot link (above) shows it out of stock most places and online, but TigerDirect has it for $249.00 (I love them)

Computers drive me crazy. I have a brand new one at work with W8 on it I bet my 10 year old ME machine is faster than it. As computera get faster, software gets bigger and slower putting us right back at the original speed.
Now granted my XP machine couldn't run a huge program or game but Internet works just fine.
ME? Wholly crap, GWAE! Wasn't ME just 98 with a little spit-shine? :)Quote: GWAEI have another desktop that has ME on it
I do (did) like XP. In fact, I just had to re-setup an XP machine at work just so I could run a supplier's software. My Win 7 machine said it could run legacy software in "XP Mode," but it couldn't.
7 is OK. I have it configured to look and function like XP, which I had set up to look and function like 98, which I had set up to look and function like 95. I really despise change for change's sake! Oh, and I run Classic Shell so Windows Explorer looks like 95's Windows Explorer.
A coworker decided to try the free upgrade to 10. It did not turn out well. His CAD & FEA software that worked flawlessly in 7 started having problems in 10. He has since reverted back to 7.
