My brother told me this. On his honeymoon he made a stop for me at the Mote Carlo Casino (the real one, not the one on the strip) to get me a cheque, which I will upoload a pic of if anyone is interested. Anyhways, you have to pay E10 to get inside. He took some time to sweet-talk the guard to get in for free to just buy a cheque. While he was doing so, the following happened.

Just as in the old days in Las Vegas, the nicest cars get parked in front. Instead of Lincolns, Cadillacs, and Imperials at the Sands, today there are exoitic sports cars parked there. We are talking six figures. So while he is there a couple tourists walk up and one tells the other to "lie on the hood" for a picture. Not stand in front of it, lie on the hood! The guard was good at his job and stopped it as soon as it started, but come on!\

Now, my dad also had an antique convertible, the lead car yearly in a small local parade every Memorial Day. One day he came out of the club that holds the parade and some people have their kids *inside* the car for a picture--NO ASKING!

Has anyone else out there had a nice car people thought they could just touch, climb in, etc? Or any other nice item?

What goes thru people's minds???

I don't have a fancy car, so I don't have that problem, however...

Nice. Teach the kids that the world revolves around them. I would have taught the kids a better lesson. I would have called the cops.

sometimes you have to boldly go where no man who asked permission has gone before, but in these cases I would indeed say "no class!

Nice cars bring out strong emotions. I have heard of people with ultra expensive cars that get keyed all the time, just because someone is very jealous. When my little Mazda Miata had the convertible hood sliced open with a knife, I was told that this happens to jaguars all the time. A friend had a convertible in Washington DC, and she finally left the doors open so that bums could sleep in the car and steal her incidentals (coins and sunglasses). She simply got tired of repairing the convertible top because people would slice it open to steal stuff. It wasn't pleasant to drive a car that smelled like body odor from someone sleeping in the car, but it's a lot less expensive to get it washed than to repair the top.

It isn't really worth it anymore. I don't know if we'll go back to the days when people in Manhattan would only drive an old beater with a "NO RADIO" sign in the back . But I wouldn't buy a six figure car.

It is kind of sad this is the society we now live in. I attribute lots of it to people somehowe being told that because people like Bill Gates are wealthy it must be because they are taking something from everyone else. But some I just attribute to a total lack of respect for anyone else's private property. Same thing happens at places like condo complexes or resorts that have pools, tennis courts, whatever. People nearby figure they can just waltz in and use them.

Yeah cars in general aren't worth it, or so it has been taught by my family and extended family. Everyone in my family has either bought a used car or bought new and made it last 20 years (seriously). As long as it runs you're good and you better not take out a loan, instead paying for it up front with cash. My dad's a Japanese accountant, I never really had a chance to become debt-ridden.

I would say the problem isn't so much class as it is manners. All too many people these days don't know good manners, or even some basic minimum of consideration towards other people.

Last flight to vegas I kept dozing through much of the flight. I also had a magazine to read when I wasn't sleeping. Well, during lunch service I placed the magazine in the middle seat, which was empty. After lunch I decided to sleep. I noticed the guy in the aisle seat picking up the magazine. I said nothing, despite the fact the should ahve asked for permission, or at the very least asked if it was my magazine (he'd seen me reading it), because it doesn't hurt me if he reads it while I sleep.

But before I could doze off he rips out a page. That was too much, so i said "Hey! Who said you could rip my magazine?" To his credit he was apologetic. I just brushed him off and tried to sleep some more. When i woke up the magazine was in the middle seat, and the guy was several rows farther back.

My favorite sign, seen at a car show I went to this weekend:

"Do you want to touch, or even drive, this car? Press the red button to get the attention of the owner."

The red button was connected to a very visible and spring-loaded mousetrap. :)

I agree with the person who said it's more a factor of not having manners than not having class. I've seen plenty of "higher class" people exhibit "low class" manners.

I've never had a fancy car, and never will, but if I did, I think I would take objection to having my car parked out front. I understand that the casino wants it there so that they look fancy or better or whatever, but if I'm valeting my car, I'd ask them to make sure they park it far in the back, away from people's prying eyes and hands. Or, if my car is going to be parked out front, then I want some cash for the advertising value I'm giving to the casino.

The casinos do like it. Ever see the "flashback" epsiode of "Las Vegas" where the guy says, "You put the Lincolns, Cadillacs, and Imperials up front.?" Just the brands have changed. I'm sure they would honor your request because someone else with a fancy car would wan the up-front spot. Plenty of attention-whores would love to park there. But I'm with you--park it in a secure spot and get it back to me quickly, that will get you the tip.

BTW: My dream "fancy car" would be along the lines of Boss Hogg's Cadillac or the "Pawn Stars" Imperial.

And thus, they probably get what they deserve, if other people are pawing all over their cars and taking pictures. :) Not that I agree with doing that. Personally, I don't really think fancy cars are all that great, so I've never had a desire to take my picture near one of those cars.

I wonder how much I'd have to tip in order to get my beaten up, muddied, cracked-windshield, tailgate-missing, no-hubcab truck parked up front...

It doesn't help their cause, when this car is often parked straddling two spaces in an attempt to prevent door dings.

What's the deal with disabled placards in high end sports cars? If you can get in and out of the thing with your butt six inches off the pavement, you can schlep it from the back of the lot like the rest of us. Save the blue spaces for the wheel chair bound.

The other abused group I feel for are motorcycle owners. Having someone "try it on for size", then drop it must be heartbreaking... sometimes leading to facebreaking...

Hey, you use up two spaces, you're gonna get keyed and damn well deserve it.

Back in college some guy once parked his car in the aisle, trapping five or six cars in their spots. The school's authorities removed one of his license plates (hey, that's one way to get license plates, I'll bet). Other students were kind enough to let the air out of all four of his tires.

Oh, the plate removal thing, that was to force parking abusers to go to student services to beg for it back, and there they got a lecture and got written up.

I'm not certain what time warp you're in, but today the cars that get parked out front of nearlt every STRIP casino are quarter-million dollar Bentleys, Maybachs & 6-figure Corvettes, BMW's, $ Mercedes'.

Sometimes it just doesn't have to be a particularly nice car: Outside the main entrance of an Indian FleaBox several people were congregating probably waiting for a bus to arrive or something. One guy is standing there leaning against some brand new car that is to be won in some drawing in a few weeks. Since I am aware that I just swiped my card to be one of the entrants in that drawing, and being ever an optimist, I went up to him and told him to get off my car! Now don't get me wrong. It was a brand new car of some sort, but it was nothing special. After all, at the Indian FleaBox, they don't have any exotic cars at all. He just felt compelled to go up and lean against it while watching the rain and waiting for his bus.

Perhaps you should re-read what I wrote and realize my point was in the glory days of the Sands it was Lincolns, Impoerials, and Cadillacs.

Seems fair to me--he wanted that space so bad now he can have it for a looooong time.
