This entirely thread is stressing me out reading it. I've tutored those in writing before, and I understand when people make mistakes, acknowledge it and correct them. When others make mistakes, realize it and continue to make the same mistakes, I get a bit irate. Even if your aim isn't to seem professional, I still have to ask: why would you go out of your way to type incorrectly? Almost everyone makes mistakes, but doing so deliberately just seems silly. I worry that if we're too lax on how writing looks it will become worse and that will be the standard. Have you ever seen Idiocracy?

I submit the opinion of an etiquette expert (don't know if she really is, or how you qualify for such a thing, but she says she is) I bolded a relevant part.

Quote:

Anyone who takes it upon him -- or herself to correct the manners of others in public makes me nervous. It seems that people have taken to correcting the mistakes of others into their own hands. The question is: Why are so many people anxious to do this? Have things turned so ugly in our society that we feel it necessary to not only confront but also comment? Do we really feel that correcting others will improve their behavior?

Manners aren't what they used to be, but pointing out someone's social errors is bad manners. Further, commenting on a person's minor gaffes, such as imperfect grammar, wrong word choices, or poor table manners crosses the politeness line and, frankly, shows a lack of social skills. When our mothers told us to mind our manners, I don't think they meant "and everyone else's manners as well!" Consider this quote from Emily Post: "Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use."

When is it all right to ask someone to change their behavior in public? If someone is talking so loudly on a cell phone or in a movie theatre that it is truly disturbing you, it is all right to politely ask that person to talk more quietly or turn off his or her phone. Last month, on board an Amtrak train, a woman seated in front of me was on her cell phone with the speaker on (she did not have a private sleeping car). The entire train car could hear dual conversations. I politely asked her to mute the call, which she did without hesitation or apology. Did I want to hand her my business card? You bet, but doing so would have been bad manners on my part. Now I use that situation as an example so others can learn from her mistake.

Right, I agree. Because once they've technically passed well into the age ranges that are generally presumed to be associated with adulthood, correction is hopeless. So the only sensible and polite thing left to do is simply to let them figuratively starve and freeze in the mental darkness quietly by themselves as a natural consequence of their incompetence at basic communication in their native language. And let them continue believing they are actually very clever, and burrow further into the comfort of seeking out people to cling to who will help nurture that delusion for them.

See? You get it. Ace's play doesn't affect them. It probably helps, since he's one less sharp making casinos sweat and taking from their bottom line. He's one less guy competing for a finite resource, which they themselves are in the business of.

But it still bugs them, dunnit?

Math isn't more black and white, it is black and white. But I wasn't talking math, I was talking gambling. And plenty do it for recreation. A good day of gambling for me, for example, is $100 buy in at Pai Gow playing however the hell I want. If an hour later I still have at least $80 and 3 or 4 free beers in me, I'm on top of the world. That's bad math. But it's great gambling.

And you may think spelling and grammar have no affect, but I can guarantee you they do. It's no different than wearing pajama bottoms when you go grocery shopping. Hell, I do it. I don't give a s#$%. But I'm not foolish enough to think I'm not being judged. And should I need something from or run into one of these people down the line, my pj wearing habits will affect my life, likely negatively.

Writing like a toddler is the literary equivalent of People of Walmart.

Not sure if used affect VS effect correctly, but I'm not going to worry about it.

Some skilled writer might compare your writing to the literary equivalent of People of Walmart. Someone might envy your writing. That reminds me, the Wizard was going on about semicolons. Perhaps I should've used one.

Someone may enjoy posting on the forum without having to worry about proper spelling, grammar or punctuation. Just like a speed counter might enjoy BJ without wanting to complicating things. I think(?) since gambling is more about the money, it's more important.

On my way out of a certain empire themed mid-Strip casino/resort at about 3-ish in the A.M. I saw a lady feverishly humping the slots in her bathrobe & bunny slippers. And nothing else as far as I could tell, which was pretty far. Everyone else pretended not to notice and judge her fashion choice, so I did too, and continued on my way only a little quicker than normal. But it was probably topic #1 of more than a few subsequent "how was Vegas" reports from Schenectady to San Diego to Singapore.

Again, I know many don't care because it's just a forum, or just a text, or they just don't care period. I really hope you're not taking this personal; I just picked on you because I've seen you be picked on before and you seemed a good sport. And in your 7,000 posts or my 4 or 5 years here or the millions of mistakes I've seen, this is the first time I've ever revealed my grammar-Nazi nature. I'm not a tw@ that has to put everyone down or make fun of them or make them feel like an jerk. I just spoke up because it was finally made a topic.

It's interesting, I think, the things we judge and what sets us off. This is one of mine, and I'm not entirely sure why. And I really do run to the store in pajamas and go out to eat in sweatpants; I know Nareed would lose her mind should she see me. Hell, I even go all "Dr. House" sometimes and wear a suit with sneakers. IDGAF. Some people give many. The "why" behind it is interesting to me.

To borrow from the kids - OMG!

I did not flag your post.

I wasn't referring to your post.

You were not out of line.

I have no desire to butcher you.

Did I mention that I didn't flag your post?

Try to put your paranoia aside for a moment and allow me to explain.

A newly joined member named Angel made his or her first post today and in that post included a link to a for profit resume service. That is against the rules, the forum rules not my rules. I couldn't care less about anyone's links.

Your confusion might lie in the fact that I didn't quote Angel's post. I didn't quote Angel's post because I knew it would be removed along with the offending link. Had I quoted the post it would have defeated the purpose which was to get rid of it. You see when you quote a post, the post stays in the quote even though the original disappears.

The offending post and link is still there because you quoted it. You have the editing power to change that if you so desire. That's entirely up to you. The link is harmless enough and nothing to worry about.

Try to relax. No one is out to get you. Wish I could say the same and I am not the least bit paranoid.

One more time. I said "did you flag this Angel". I was differentiating between the new poster named Angel and your Angel. "This Angel" referred to the new member.

Shame on me for taking the time to compose a friendly post and to try to reassure you that all is well. It won't happen again.

You are becoming quite the prolific poster with 234 post in July alone and 649 posts so far since Feb, 27th. It's been a few months since someone has posted that frequently. Keep up the good work.

2F,

It looks like you cleared up some of what confused you about 1BB's post, but maybe not all of it, because you did not edit your original quote to remove the link after he suggested you go back and do it. So I removed it.

Here's generally how this part of the forum works, for you and anybody else who doesn't already know :

People program bots to go or are themselves paid to go places on the internet they can comment.

They sign up to that website, picking some random username, in this case Angel, so that they can make a post.

They grab a random place to post, in this case a dormant thread, and stick up a comment that may or may not (in this case not) be germane to the discussion. Their comment includes a link to something. The link will get them paid for each person who clicks on it from here.

Most often this is the first post (and the last) that person makes; they've deposited their poop and they're moving on to the next site, never to return; they never wanted to be a participating member, just sell their crap.

We do not allow this; it is called Spam. It happens several times a week, if not several times a day. We mods disable the account and remove the post and/or the link when we see it.

Members who see this kind of post before the mods do are asked to "flag" that post, using the "flag post" button. This will help to remove the post if enough members do it, helping to police the forum. That is what 1BB was asking; if you had done your part by flagging that post, because he could see it was Spam.

Now, if you, 2F, quote the spam post, the link lives on unless you remove it, so it did no good to remove the original post. Which is the other thing 1BB was talking about. Don't perpetuate the spam by quoting the link. If for some reason you want to respond to the spammer, take the link out of the quote. But the smart thing to do is to flag the post and not respond to it or quote it.

Pest control. A constant annoyance. But necessary.

I hope you understand better. Thanks!
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

Thanks BABS,
I really already knew all that, but thanks for the explanation anyway.
Was really a coincidence that the new poster name was somewhat similar to a term I had used recently.
I saw new name, saw link to something, I am very wary of links, from known posters much less new ones, and yes I do look at the join date on a name I don't recognize. I said Angel is not my Angel, IBB made his comment, which truthfully could be read a couple different ways, I reacted badly. All my fault, and you needed to moderate. I hope you understand it was a misunderstanding, no devilish intent on my part. I will try to do better, but am a rascal. You knew that, Ms Erasor, but you also know I mean no harm. You probably noticed a couple days ago I myself suggested that really crude posts not be quoted, not the crude parts anyway, to make erasure easier. Obviously, that also applies to links from bots or whatevers that aren't crude. Only been about 30 days since you slapped my wrist last time, I' gonna shoot for at least 60-90 days, 120 would be better, before I waste your time again. Thx for your patience. 2F

There is such a word as to loose. It is possible to loose patience with people, to loose a person or a thing, to loose a chance. ..

I've decided [judging by this forum over the years] that the Oxford English Dictionary will have to finally concede that it is a word, that to 'loose' as in 'lose' can be a special thing in gambling. Like they had to do recently with, for instance, 'butt dial'

so you can lose your car keys, but you loose your money in a casino LOL

I can "loose hellfire and and the fury of The Lord upon you", well I can't really but is it, the word "loose", used appropriately there?
Youuuuuu MIGHT be a 'rascal' if.......(nevermind ;-)...2F
