Is there a worse deal out there than buying PPV for a Ronda Rousey fight?

You pretty much know she is going to win before the fight starts, and there is a very strong probability that the fight won't even go one round. Last fight? 14 seconds.

I suppose it is due to my having 3 daughters, but I have come to appreciate some of the female sports.

Ronda Rousey is good looking, but she is a beast in the ring. I'm not much of an MMA fan (it is a pretty brutal sport), but there is something compelling that makes me watch the females fight. And makes me glad I don't have to deal with them.

The LPGA golfers are fun to watch. I can compare my game much more realistically to the gals, than to the guys. The gals would still kick my a$$, but at least we would be hitting the ball about the same distances, instead of 50 yds short of the guys.

I used to enjoy women's tennis matches, until Monica Seles started the grunting trend. The shrill shrieking is too hard to overcome now, although the mute button is a great tool.

The women fast pitch softball players don't get enough credit either. It would be a pretty safe bet to take the pitcher side of any bet pitting anyone here against a Jenny Finch caliber pitcher.

Re: Monica Seles, I completely agree with you. And now there are girls on the circuit that are worse. Every stroke is filled with a primal scream like their life depends on it. There's no reason for all this fist pumping, falling to the ground when you win match point antics. But we live in a new era, and it's more popular to move back to the jungle. Enlightment, courtesy, good sportsmanship have lost their appeal. It's more fun to dance around the fire like savages.

How do you consider that a bad deal? Would it be better if they had a boring wrestling match with limited punches that lasted all 5, 5 minute rounds? You want to see a finish, one way or another... It just happened to come after 14 seconds this time. There's been knockouts that are faster.

The funny thing is, not many people can appreciate all that happened in those 14 seconds. When she went to catch Cat, she got taken down and mid air reversed her hips so she could reuse the momentum to reflip her. Once she did that to stop the chain (from getting reflipped) she stepped over her back with one leg. Cat was trying to keep the chain going thus tugging on Ronda's head to reflip her to her back, but after Ronda stepped over she stopped that and Cat should have IMMEDIATELY pulled her arm back in. She left it out there 3 seconds too long, to which a world class grappler such as Ronda identified, trapped by placing her own arm over it on to Cat's back, and re-positioned her hips to break it, getting the tap.

The amount of technical chess play that went in to that 14 seconds is lost by so many people because they simply don't understand what they're watching. On the other hand, a lot of the MMA community/fans have come a long way and understand (at least at a high level) what Ronda did. Tons of people think that was a great card, and fight... even if they do wish it lasted a bit longer =p. As a couple of my friends said, and I agree, the worst part is having to wait to watch her fight again. She's an amazing athlete.

All that being said, I still unfortunately don't watch women's sports simply because they can't compete at levels men can in their respective sports 99% of the time. Some of the women in the UFC can though, in my opinion. I've been training MMA for 7+ years. I would LOVE to see any 'untrained' guy, in the world, take on one of these ladies. Spoiler: These ladies would have a field day with them. Even guys 'slightly' heavier than them (170-180lbs vs 135lbs, etc).

I'm also not sure why people consider MMA so "brutal." Boxing is more brutal. You might not see as much blood, but MMA fighters won't all be brain dead in 30 years. In boxing when a fighter gets rocked (i.e. probable concussion) they get 8 seconds to recoup enough to show the ref they can keep going. In MMA, much like a real fight, if you're "rocked" and can't defend yourself, you're done and the fight is over. This saves the fighters from inuring more damage going for 10 rounds, etc. It's a billion times better to get knocked out from 1 punch at 100% (4oz gloves) than it is to get punched in the head 200 times at 80% (16oz gloves).

100% inaccurate... They're apples and oranges. The super bowl is a preset determined length, pretty much no matter what. Part of what makes MMA so dynamic and fun is that it can all be over, at any time. People love that dynamic factor, except when it happens after 14 seconds lol.

I think the OP's "problem" was not that the fight "could" end in 14 seconds, but there probably isn't anybody who can last one round with Rousey at the moment. The same applies to a boxing match that ends in the first round - remember the hype that led up to Mike Tyson vs. Michael Spinks, which ended in the first round? Or how about the Frasier-Foreman fight, that lasted two rounds ("Down Goes Frasier! Down Goes Frasier!") Even Saturday Night Live did a joke about this sort of thing once; the show's opening sketch had to be replaced with a replay of some fight NBC aired that lasted about a minute because NBC "wanted to get its money's worth out of it."

As for Super Bowls not "ending early," there have been a few SBs where the result was not in much doubt after the first quarter ended. In fact, I am convinved that a "trend" of early blowouts led to the end of the game-long Bud Bowl; Budweiser, along with a few other advertisers, wanted to limit their commercials to the first quarter out of fear that there would be far fewer viewers after that, so Bud Bowl went from one commercial per quarter to just one, in the first quarter.

Romes is right.

Top female boxer Holly Holm may be Rousey's next opponent. Holm left boxing as a world champion to fight MMA.

She will not dish out or absorb as much punishment in MMA as the fight linked below, one of the most brutal beatings I have ever seen in the ring...and six months later she won the rematch.

Actually, I have heard that some LPGA executives like the lack of "big crowds", as it opens the doors to a number of courses that couldn't handle PGA-sized crowds.

In my opinion, there are three sports where the women can not only draw as well as the men, but, in some cases (depending in part on where it's being held), better; tennis, Olympic figure skating, and Olympic gymnastics. (What surprises me is, the NCAA hasn't been able to sell out the women's Division I basketball championship game in advance for the past few years, although the fact that it's on a Tuesday night may have something to do with it.)

To show you the difference between the WNBA and NBA, salaries in the WNBA are capped, yes capped, at 110K. If the last player on the bench of the worst NBA team were to get offered a 110K contract it would be a gross violation of the CBA.

Well, she got her ass handed to her and it was well deserved.

I'm not that much into women contact sports, but had watch most of her fights and while she is indeed quite a fighter, her arrogance seems to have got the best of her.
I can't stand arrogant people, women or men that's why I consider Fedor the greatest MMA fighter even if he may not have been the best of all time, his always humble altitude through all the years of glory was the best thing about him.

Man, that left straight followed by a left kick in the neck by Holm was just a pleasure to watch.

I think that while Rousey is very good, the UFC hype machine went into full overdrive to market her in the emerging market of women's mma. And a good portion of the public bought into that hype. I get why they do it, it brings eyes and dollars to the sport, but the hype does not mean she's the best.

I'm not a huge MMA fan but I've watched a *lot* of boxing. If Rousey doesn't learn to catch or block a straight left thrown by a trained southpaw, I don't see her winning the rematch. I thought the point of MMA was that if you're fighting a boxer, you take out their legs so they can't punch. I just watched the whole fight again -- Rousey spent the whole fight headhunting. That was probably the worst possible gameplan.

Maybe other's are more sure because of their background knowledge, but I'm guessing it's hard to say with just this one fight how the next one goes.

Rousey won't be convinced she was dominated by a superior opponent, until she and her trainers have got in there with new a strategy and it falls apart. If it does fall apart.

You must not know much about boxing and mma and ppv because this a very ignorant statement.
Maywether - Pacquiao got 4.5+ million ppv buys.
Tyson - Lewis got 2 million buys
Brock Lesnar has the record for mma with 1.6 million buys
Rousey has never even cracked 1 million buys with her as the sole main event.
Lesnar, Liddell, Couture, Silva, none of those mma greats even came close to 4.5 and yet you think Rouseys going to top Floyd and Manny's 4.5? lol dream on

You must not know much about boxing and mma and ppv because this a very ignorant statement.
Maywether - Pacquiao got 4.5+ million ppv buys.
Tyson - Lewis got 2 million buys

I dunno man, this fight was pretty good. A rematch might not catch the boxing, but it could break the MMA record.

wow, that was something. I had not watched one of those before.

Kind of surprised at the lack of protection for the head and hands. I think it had to hurt almost as badly to punch someone as it does to get punched.

I also think it might have been that one solid punch to the nose in round 1 that won it, and the rest was icing. She had to be disoriented from that; did you see the color of her face by the end of that round? That kick from the off-side was vicious to finish her off, but it didn't seem like it landed as solidly as the punch.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

It was absolutely vicious the other girl was amazing but I gotta think rousey didn't focus as much and had a bad game plane coming in. The ufc searched all over to find this girl and sign her to go up against rousey, I'll give them major props for putting on great matches
No longer hiring, don’t ask because I won’t hire you either

Here is something to entertain you. Holly's deadly Thai kick (with 750lb per inch) can break a baseball bat. Watch the demo.

Now that you know something about the deadly Thai kick. Go back and watch how Holly sneakily kicked Ronda in her head with full force. Ronda's neck/head could break like the baseball bat! If I were Ronda's life insurance company, I would find a loophole to immediately raise her premium to a billion dollars before Ronda fights Holly again.
I'm OK with Corps which pick and choose clienteles. Both insurance companies and casinos have the right to pick and choose customers. They may keep profitable ones and kicked out the rest. But, I'm not OK with a casino supervisor who says counting cards... is like stealing food from a buffet (a foodlifting offense), or video-taping a movie in a cinema (a piracy offense).

It was more about arrogance than style, she wanted to outbox the boxer.

Thanks for the facts. I will stick by the prediction a Rousey rematch will out sell Canelo-Cotto.

I said almost, not top it, but again, Thanks.
