Totally wrong! After having your house destroyed by tornadic activity many rebuilds are to higher standard decreasing the odds that a tornado will destroy it.

Perhaps the home would be built better, but this is strictly a science related question not politics, based on climate trends wouldn’t the expectation of a tornado hitting your home in the first place be more likely in the future then it has been historically? Not major differences, but a gradually increasing chance nonetheless?
Quote: DRichI am surprised that we have actually had two tornado's touch down near Ft. Myers in the five months that we have lived here. Nobody mentioned to me about tornado's down this far south, all anyone talks about are the hurricanes that we can expect. Fortunately, a little wind and rain doesn't scare me.

Tornado probabilities come along with tropical storms from my understanding. To my understanding they go together so long as it doesn’t meet hurricane qualifications.
A: Both start with sucking and blowing and before you know it you've lost your house and everything you own.

I found a body floating in Lake Mead many years ago. It wasn't in a barrel, it was floating in the middle of the lake.
Although the fact that the body was in a barrel at the bottom of the lake may have something to do with it.
Scouts were organized to try and rescue whatever wildlife was left. Within the first half-hour, two guns were found and the event was canceled. It turned out to be a dumping ground for many guns and knives. I hadn't known until then that the lake was artificial and had been swampland until the 1940s.

actually the problem of vulnerable women interacting with these criminals is fairly new, it being unthinkable not so long ago to allow such contact. Now that women are in contact through their various jobs.... lawyers, prison psychologists [not guards much I think]... we have these incidents of romance and resultant episodes of helping inmates escape. I get the feeling that it is now realized that it is necessary to take extra steps to warn women to not fall victim.
Of course the incidents get a lot of media attention, so maybe the percentages of women falling victim is low. But undeniably a case of 'up from zero'
The problem isn't 'good looks' so much as that many, many criminals are masters of manipulation, world class con-men that have spent a lifetime practicing their art. In so many cases it's what got them in trouble in the first place.

You must have very expensive taste in cookies. I shop at Walmart Neighborhood Market and the cookies I buy are the Walmart brand version of the Girl Scout cookies called Thin Mints. Last week I paid $2,12 for a pack but that inflation has hit those cookies too as I used to pay about $1.79 a few weeks ago.

Quote: billryanIs there a difference between a black hole and a wormhole as used in SciFi?
link to original post
A black hole is a gravitational singularity--the star that formed it was so large that when it collapsed nothing could stop the implosion: normal matter became degenerate matter as the electrons were shoved into their smallest possible orbits. That wasn't enough, so it got worse. Electrons were forced into protons to become neutrons, and the star became a neutron star. But no, the sheer mass of the star was so much that neutrons were squeezed into quark plasma...and the density of that is so great that the escape velocity from the surface of that star became greater than the speed of light--and the star went completely black--a black hole. There's a hell of a lot more about BHs and the crazy things that happen around them. DM me for more.
Black holes are real, and just this past week they've released an image of Sagittarius A, a known BH.
A wormhole is a theoretical connection between two points in space-time, where the distance between the two points is vastly greater in the 'normal' universe than the distance through the wormhole. The points in space-time that can support the formation of a wormhole vary greatly in SF, as well as in theoretical physics. In SF, they exist in places that are nearby a star, yet far enough away to allow plot points to happen. In one notable exception, the Niven-Pournelle universe where the Moties existed had the exit of one wormhole (an "Alderson point") actually inside the atmosphere of a orange-red supergiant star..
Wormholes have not been proven to exist. But folks keep hoping.
Quote:A scientific paper published this week has found that gaming might cause positive gains in intelligence in children. Although links between gaming and its impact on intelligence have been found before, this study found evidence for the impact in stronger terms and suggested causal links between gaming and intelligence.
..
The paper is published on Nature.com and the study was carried out by a team of European researchers based in universities in Sweden, The Netherlands, and Germany. The study's aim was to determine what impact screen time had on children's intelligence, with special focus on playing video games as compared with watching videos.
To make my point, it would be pretty silly to call playing video games "gambling', unless there is actual gambling.

Mostly the items in those long lists are poorly sourced, cherrypicked and taken out of context, and they are often taken from mass media, not from the scientific literature.
In some cases, they were not fulfilled because we did something about them (e.g. the ozone hole, acid rain).
Scientists usually don’t spend time commenting images somebody posts on social media.

My grandparents had a cottage on Fire Island that was completely destroyed in a hurricane. Realizing what would have happened had the family been there for the storm( it happened two weeks after they closed it down after Labor Day) they rebuilt the main Island.
My grandmother got all the kids to go in the water, come out and start walking. After about 100 yards, their suits stopped dripping and their feet dried as to not leave wet footprints. That's the spot my grandfather built his new cottage. That was 1939 and it is still standing, although its been expanded and renovated so many times, it's hard to say what is original. From a two-room, no bathroom, no kitchen cottage to today's three-bedroom, two-bath has been quite the journey. Meanwhile, people come in and build where they shouldn't and then wonder why they get flooded out. The end of our property used to border on a punk field. Literally, swampland that some developer tried to fill in and build million-dollar houses on. It wasn't very successful.

Yes, it used to be very common on live games in casinos to have a house player (prop player) to get games started. As enough players joined the prop players would leave to make seats available for more customers. I think most casinos had a rule that if you asked, the prop players had to identify themselves as playing for the house.

Congress has held a hearing with Pentagon officials to discuss UFO reports and videos made by military pilots
lots of questions - no real answers
summary from Wikipedia:
"On June 25, 2021, the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a preliminary report on UAPs,[49] largely centering on evidence gathered in the last 20 years from US Navy reports. The report came to no conclusion about what the UAPs were, based on a lack of evidence,[50] though in a limited number of incidents, UAP reportedly appeared to exhibit unusual flight characteristics, including high velocity,[51] breaking the sound barrier without producing a sonic boom,[52] high maneuverability not able to be replicated otherwise,[53] long-duration flight,[54] and an ability to submerge into the water.[28][55][45][56][54] Some of the UAPs appeared to move with no discernable means of propulsion,[57] and it was noted that the alleged high speeds and maneuvers would normally destroy any craft.[54] These observations could be the result of sensor errors, spoofing, or observer misperception, and require additional rigorous analysis.[57]
The report indicated that, in most cases, the UAP recordings probably were of physical objects, and not false readings, as individual instances had been detected by different sensor mechanisms, including visual observation. The report also stated that "UAP probably lack a single explanation", and proposed five possible categories of explanation: airborne clutter, natural atmospheric phenomena, US government or industry development technology, foreign craft, and an "Other" category.[57]
The report raised concerns that the UAPs could be a safety issue, with regard to a possible collision with US aircraft, and that they could pose a security threat if they were foreign craft gathering information about the US.[57] The report indicated that investigation of the topic would continue, including development of reporting protocols.[57] The report also indicated that, of the sightings reported, all except one (confirmed as a weather balloon) lack sufficient information to attribute a specific explanation or explanations.[50]"
