Stay stupid America-keep electing Democrats.
I live in NY. Tolls are alive and well. Perhaps I should send them all the pics of roads, STATE roads, mind you, that are little more than wagon trails due to the decay. Or the roads, STATE roads, mind you, that are currently closed due to the inability to navigate them safely. Or the interstate that caved in and fell into the river. Or the bridges with rebar showing and perforated decks you can see through. I drive over brick every day because the potholes have reached the layer of roads laid in the early 1920s
WNY got almost $200mm of the $650mm generated in tolls. Gimme your number and I'll text anyone right now of the transportation utopia that toll money will buy you =p
Quote: IbeatyouracesIt'll either be tolls or higher gas tax. Take your pick.
Raising the gas tax is easy. Adding tolls costs money and slows traffic down.IF I have to pick my poison I will take the taxes. As card become more fuel efficient theye ill have to raise taxes.
The fuel tax must be raised or the federal gov't has to get out of the road building business.
Quote: IbeatyouracesLuckily no tolls here in Michigan yet, but the idea has been flirted with. The only ones are for crossing the Mackinac Bridge or the toll bridge to Grosse Ile down river.
They should pay you, as sort of a reward for making it across without being blown over the side.
Quote: IbeatyouracesLol. Wouldn't be the first time a car has went over the railing. And I love it up there! :-)
You should try it in an RV, it's terrifying! =D
Yes but not all drivers have the transponders. Ezpass is accepted in some states but not all. So you still need a traditional toll for some people.Quote: dwheatleyWe have an electronic toll road that has a transponder in your car, and overhead sensors and cameras on the ramps that don't slow down traffic.

Just hope it's not run by Transurban!

Once they get everyone signed up and make it ALMOST a necessity to have a transponder, they will start using them to give out speeding tickets.Quote: wudgedJust hope it's not run by Transurban!

(Er, yes, it is, and the article even mentions it:)
Quote:Though some older segments of the network — notably the Pennsylvania and New Jersey turnpikes and Interstate 95 in Maryland and Virginia — are toll roads, most of the 46,876-mile system has been toll-free.
Also, if you go by a strict definition, there are four interstates in the San Francisco area that have tolls, although all four are bridges (I-80 - Bay and Carquinez; I-680 - Benicia; I-580 - Richmond/San Rafael)
