Actually Eagles WR Riley Cooper was sent to "sensitivity training" for 3 days last summer after his incident and then returned to the team. Multiple minority writers in Philly made light of this and were not happy with the little punishment he received with some saying they didn't know racism could be cured in 3 days.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking. I can't believe they are going so hard on him. Normally people can just say "sorry" and take a course or rehab. Although, you would have to call it something fancy like "Axels Tolerance Training".
Some of his comments were a bit much, but really, who wants their girlfriend taking pictures and hanging around big sausage black guys? Especially if (most likely) his sausage is past expiry.
To me, it seemed more like jealousy than racism. Maybe she cheated on him with black guys before? When I heard the recordings it seemed more like he had a problem with jealousy than race.
And what about her?! She's the real pig in this situation. Recording her old man, baiting him into saying stupid things. This whole thing stinks of a set up.
If racism is ignorance, then punishing him to this extent is overboard. Most celebrities get out of jams with an apology and rehab.
Get him into Axels Tolerance Training and move on. Im not sure why there is a witch hunt for him, but this all seems like it was a planned takedown. Her recording was definitely planned and basically scripted. Give the old bugger a break -- Axels Tolerance Training!

This could all end up in court but I think this is a situation where putting the team on the market and getting a decent price for it is the best outcome the owner can expect at this point. He and the NBA both have deep enough pockets to paper the courts for years, so it could go that way, too.
As a person, he can say pretty much whatever he wants. As a business owner, he has to follow the law...something he obviously had a problem with in the past regarding discrimination...and people can choose to buy or not buy his product or service. As a member of an organization that exists to make his individual business (and the collective entity) more profitable, he has to live within a set of rules he might not necessarily set for himself.
Yes, the league has bylaws or a constitution, or what ever you want to call it, A set of behaviors that is not acceptable to the league. They have punished and fined coaches, players and owners in the past for saying things. But the difference in this case is that Donald Sterling did not hold a press conference and/or take the podium and state these views. These were things he said, in the privacy of his home, that were taped and released to the public without his knowledge and possibly illegally.
Again, it pains me to defend this man, because I find his words and actions despicable, but there is nothing illegal about being a racist and or a dick.
Will he apologize and take sensitivity training classes?

In general, I'd agree with the sentiment that people should not be punished for their thoughts or what they say. But in this instance, Sterling has a well documented history of being a racist. The NBA has turned a blind eye to Sterling's antics for quite a long time now, including when he illegally moved the team from San Diego to LA. The difference this time is the media attention, which really forces Silver to do something meaningful.
WRT a potential court battle: the commish and the board of governors have the power to make the Clippers franchise essentially worthless (Not to mention the fact that they were already bleeding sponsors before Silver's announcement). For example, one thing I read was that the board could simply make all of the Clipper's players free agents next season. You can bet that the player's association would be gladly extend the CBA for this once clause.

So you shouldn't get punished for what you think or say.....but if you're racist, you can get punished for what you think or say??

Unfortunately, over here in Asia that isn't true. We went from Flight 370 to the South Korean ferry accident. The girlfriend setting up the rich guy hardly ever happens here because the guy always pays the money. I personally, and I'm not rich, have a "phone off" policy when I have a guest over for an hour or two(usually only one). If she doesn't like said rule, she can leave without the money. We now on FOX get the news Mr. Sterling has prostate cancer and is dying. Who can blame him really in the big picture, pissed off at that girlfriend who was hauling her new "black" guys around and as I posted, showing him up in public places including his own teams basketball games.

Yes, surreptitious recording laws. The majority hold that only one party need to know of the recording, so long as it is that party that is doing the recording. I did this once to a girl I was dating, sued her, wound up on TV court, and won. True story, trailer park heaven. Sex, weed, limos, money, cameras, fame.

I was reading "25 people fired over Facebook postings" thing the other day, so people do get punished all the time for what they say. (I daresay, some people don't get hired because of Facebook postings and may never know it).
Anyway, though, this guy didn't post or say something in a place that was public that might be discovered at some point like all those people. That's what he has going for him -- or in his favor regardless of what he said.
