When purchasing some souvenirs Downtown (precisely at the store sporting the neon cowboy sign), I was given an odd coin as change instead of a quarter, same size but another coin. I was going to complain to the cashier, then realized it made for a good story, if I could identify the coin. Problem is the markings on it, except for the numbers, are in Arabic, which I cannot read.

So I went online and quickly identified it as a Moroccan 1 Dirham piece, perhaps circa 1987. Here's a photo of the actual coin:

And the reverse:

They're a bit distorted. Coins are hard to photograph without a tripod.

I won't say I'm surprised to see a Moroccan coin in Vegas. Travelers carry some of their home currency with them for expenses at the airport both on the way out and the trip back. But I wonder if this one was deliberately passed off as a quarter. According to a currency converter site, it's worth 11 cents US.

Back in the mid 80s the one peso coin was the same size as a quarter (that piece is long gone now). I recall taking some along to try to use in vending machines at a lay over in Houston. The machines wouldn't take them, though. I did not attempt to pass them off as quarters any other way.

I got a Lebanese 100 Livres coin in a casino change machine once. I'll post it online if I get the chance.
