I will be in Las Vegas April 5-12. I am interested in visiting sites with Indian petroglyphs. I am going to Grapevine Canyon near Laughlin and the Valley of Fire. I was reading about Sloan Canyon south of LV. I won't have a high clearance vehicle and I was wondering how far a hike I would have without one to the Sloan Canyon trailhead.

Cool. I was going there for a trip to the casino there also. I guess just ask the ranger?

No ranger on the side you got to go. You have to turn down a road called calico basin right before red rock canyons entrance. There will be two parking lots. Ones paved. The second is just gravel. Go to the gravel one. You'll see a yellowish mountain called kraft mountain in front of you. If you travels along the base of it to the right towards the creek bed. You will see some big boulders at the base and some signs saying petroglyphs are there.

I've done a little hiking in Sloan Canyon. There is also good yet easy mountain biking too. Red Rock is much more impressive. Sloan Canyon is more of a place for Henderson locals to go for a short hike.

A good outdoor activity idea is Nelson's Landing. I posted some cliff jumping videos there recently. It will be on your way to Laughlin.

Thanks Wiz! That looks like a neat side trip. Wish I still had a metal detector LOL. This all started when I went to Las Vegas with my sister for a billiards tournament she was playing in. We took a day to drive to Laughlin in the middle of the summer in 2011. My sister now refers to Laughlin as "Hell Nevada" . For some reason I have been fascinated with the desert and it's inhabitants ever since. I was going to take the Christmas Tree Pass Road to soak up some scenery and came across an article about Grapevine Canyon and the petroglyphs there and am finding out Southern Nevada has a lot of them. Interesting how small some of the tribes populations were/are. I imagine most of the tribes lived along the Colorado River. Amazing to think they walked/rode across the desert to some of these sites.

It is about 15 miles north of Lake Mohave.

Just asked my buddy. He thinks nelsons landing is the name of the place I went cliff jumping with him before. Do you got a link to those videos?

For anyone that's never been cliff jumping before, try to not slap your hands on the water or bite your tongue when you land. I learned both the hard way.

I would add to try to go in as straight as possible. Think about making as small of a splash as you can. When my son jumped you can see his legs ere bent and he said "ow!" when he came up.

I would also recommend for the men, especially the older ones, to cover the family jewels with one hand.

Keep your legs straight, but don't lock your knees with your toes pointed downward.

Prob the same place. hard to tell. I got a couple pics on my facebook but they were being shot from the opposite direction. I remember there being like a beach you could park at. Then you go up to the right for the first major cliff. Then you can keep wandering to some other cliffs further right that didn't look as high.
