Most of us are aware of the site and of the Wizard's wish to discuss non gambling topics there. In my case, I have a large group of family and friends that are always up for a lively discussion and I get my fill from them. I wouldn't want to join a site and not participate and I think that would happen.
What are your reasons for not partaking, especially those who regularly discuss non gambling issues here?
Quote: 1BBNo silly poll, just a straightforward question.

I joined DT but it seems when I post over there (a non-gambling subject) - the thread doesn't really go anywhere whereas if I post Off Topic on WoV, the thread has life
Maybe the Wizard needs to remove the Off Topic section in full from WoV…?
I can see why others haven't. It mostly looks dead. :(

IMO if he removed the off topic area I would probably come here less. I don't visit DT at all because I just don't have enough time to keep up with multiple forums. I already visit 3 which is about my max. When I started coming here daily I dropped another one.
Edit: OK, you made me look. I went today, just after posting. Looks pretty much the same as the last time I visited. Perhaps I should go contribute something...but what? Maybe later.

How about if he just let users here block entire sections. That way those not interested in off topic threads would not be "bothered" by them.
I realize my suggestion is highly impracitcal because it might actually work ;) (NOTE: THIS IS A FRIGGIN'JOKE!!)
People too lazy to scroll to the bottom of the page to post an off topic could get a 3 day ban. All problems solved. (hah ha)
nm: just found it on the bottom of the forum page.

I haven't joined because I don't care about all the off-topic crap. I joined a gambling forum because I want to discuss gambling topics. I know, I know, it's crazy.

Thanks!
I did not know that. I had been busy evading this forum.
I'll be posting that link whenever anyone complains about off topic posts. Maybe I should also bump up the thread three, four times a day ;)
Of course, this will kill DT.

And yet, people would not even need to block off-topics if DT was at the bottom of this site because they wouldn't see them until they scrolled all the way down. Wizard did not ask my opinion before he started the other site, but I give it anyway. : ) Of course, he would need to enforce not posting OTs in top portion here still. But short bans would get the message across pretty fast for violators.
Of course he could just start running bans here to keep it all gambling all the time, but apparently does not want to.
Quote: chickenmanI find most of the topics/post uninteresting and quite a few threads are just monologues by a couple of the most active members, kind of like FB without pictures...;-(
I dare you to read Paco's posts and say there are no pictures :)
Seriously, that's what you get on a board with only about five active members, and which lacks any kind of theme. On the plus side there's the full collection of every folly contained in Windows 8(.1).
Quote: SOOPOOPushing off topic topics to DT only weakens this site. As I stated in a previous thread about this very same subject, I am interested in what my gambling friends think about guns, politics, sex, as well as casinos, odds, etc.... If the non gambling topics are barred here, I would be less likely to show up. For those only interested in pure gambling related topics, they can block all the threads that do not interest them.
These mirror my sentiments. I'm not particularly interested in non-gambling topics, as a whole, although it's nice to read a varied collection of topics from the posters on this site.

With the ability to block non-gambling threads (or any threads that don't interest you), there is no good reason for DT unless the boss decides to drive ALL of the off-topic (non-Las Vegas/non-gambling) stuff that way. Short of that, they are just maintaining two boards for not a lot of benefit...unless he can monetize it in anyway to pay for the boards. That is my opinion only; I have no idea how much time/effort goes into running one of these things.
Face and Nareed were the main posters when I was over there; kudos to them (and anyone else who tried to get it moving). It just lacks traction.

Many folks seem to use this as the reason for not joining or abandoning, and I understand. Many of us there feel the same, but I think we know that it'll take some work if it is to have a chance. So we post, and continue to do so, to try to create momentum.
I compared DT to my old '93 Beretta with no starter. It won't run by itself, it needs a push. Right now, DT is running only because there's a few of us pushing it. But we need more if it is to run on its own. AZD has recommitted to posting more frequently. boymimbo has since joined and has begun posting more frequently. Both Mission and Babs have committed to pumping out the content. And Nareed, rxwine, Fleastiff, Pacomartin and myself continue to post about whatever so happens to be on our minds.
I think if we get a wad of folks from here to go there for a week or two, and start laying down threads of anything we want to talk about, all the off topic stuff we either plop here at WoV or that's been on our minds that we've been holding onto, it might be enough for it to turn over and run on its own.
If you're not interested, no problem. But if low content or low responses are what's been turning you off, come on back. Start posting. Be a pusher for a few days and let's see if we can get this pig started =)
When I joined this site it was because I am interested to see what goes on in the gaming world. I enjoy casinos and I have a poker chip collection. I like the off topic conversations on this site because I like to have conversations with people who enjoy things that I do. I feel DT is a different group of people. Sure there are some people on there that are over here too. If that site is going to do well then it will have to draw people from the outside. These people would be people who enjoy that type of talk and not necessarily people who like gambling talk.
Best example that I can give would be:
I enjoy bowling and bowl on a team. When I am bowling we talk about bowling but we also discuss sports, woman, idiots, and the world around us. I enjoy the conversation since I am hanging with people that have similar interests.
The next night a few of the guys play in chess league. I am sure during that night they talk about chess and other things. I may be interested in a few of their topics but I would not be interested in as many of them as I am on the bowling nights.
Except for DT.
So why doesn't it take off? I think precisely because it seems to be the forum about nothing in particular.
Quote: NareedYou know, I don't recall ever joining any kind of internet forum that wasn't focused or centered on one theme or subject. To be sure some have very wide themes (such as Philosophy, which pretty much covers literally everything; and I literally mean "literally.") But not since the paleoelectronic era of the pre-widely-available-internet period BBS (Bulleting Board System), have I ever signed up to a board/forum without a central theme or subject.
Except for DT.

I believe you are right. We are all here because of an interest in gambling. There is a wide variety of gambling conversation and some general discussion, too.
DT does not have the same draw. Who is going to google or hear about it in another related forum (I heard about WoV/WoO in the Vegas Message Board, for example). The members there who contribute are pretty much regulars here who are trying to do as the Wizard has asked us to do--move that stuff, not related to gambling, over that way.
A heavily promoted show about nothing in particular may work out; not so much for an internet forum.

Hey it worked for Jerry Seinfeld : )
My reasoning is the same as others have stated already, I don't have time to keep up with several forums. WOV is actually perfect for me... Gambling is my biggest interest /hobby, which is obviously the focus topic here. And my other interests such as sports, the stock market, traveling, and chippies... Are all also discussed here in some form or another.
I get what you are saying, I have no problems talking about anything. However, enough of that happens within gambling related threads anyways. Do you really want a new thread started, just hear about what someones dog had for dinner last night? I still don't know why people cant just add some gambling or Vegas related stuff to what ever they are talking about.Quote: SOOPOOPushing off topic topics to DT only weakens this site. Sometimes I feel I'm the only person who got that the central theme in "Seinfeld" was manners.

I think it would be more accurate to say the theme was etiquette
