On the flip side, if the stuff he does is real then he is a maniac.
His street stuff with cards/objects are what I enjoy.
I also like his street stuff but in this new show it all just seems fake. I think his stunts are so elaborate that there is just no way they can be real. Then there is the part where he shows you how he did a trick and its always some really dumb one that is super obvious how he did it. How about showing us how you made crickets appear in a ladies purse.
The best performers of the art are the ones that do it right in front of you. If you've ever seen the show "Fool Us", where magicians have to fool Penn and Teller to win, those are some real talented people. If you haven't, search for it on YouTube. They are fabulous.

Quote: Zcore13I can't remember who it was, but some well known magician (maybe Penn and Teller) says that Chris Angel shouldn't even be mentioned as a real magician. All of his tricks are camera tricks and spliced footage.

Never heard of fool us. That sounds like something fun to do at work tomorrow.
I absolutely loved the Penn and Teller show at the RIO years ago. Hopefully they are still there next time I make it out there.

They've been there for 10 years now, and still going strong. I would guess it depends on how long before you get there.
Quote: AxelWolfI BELIEVE I mentioned this before on this this forum. Chris angel has become a sell out. IMO (god bless him) His show is full of fart joke and campy humor. He lost his edge, and is no longer cool, My GF Used to have a crush on him, she was very disappointed he looks like a pansy now ,she said. His show is so lame now.

That was my wifes first thought when I turned on the new show last week. She was like WTF, he cut his hair and she thinks he is now talking with a lisp.
Ya....I was going to say he turned gay however I thought that may offend Bob or something.Quote: GWAEThat was my wifes first thought when I turned on the new show last week. She was like WTF, he cut his hair and she thinks he is now talking with a lisp.
Quote: GWAEQuite frankly I don't believe that a single thing he does on the show is genuine. It has to be all smoke and mirrors.
Erm...uh...well, yeah. That's what "magic" is.
Quote: GWAE... she thinks he is now talking with a lisp.
He's always had a lisp.

He's always had a lisp.
If he could rid himself of his lisp, now that would be magic.

Well yeah I know it is all smoke and mirrors. It is different when you are there and you can't figure out how they did it, opposed to them stop filming and then change the outcome.
I have never really noticed the lisp before. Maybe it was the haircut that changed perception.
I'm telling you, if you haven't seen the fool us videos, you really need to. That's the real(as it gets) stuff. if you can fool Penn and Teller while they are staring at you looking for what you were doing, you are good.

Quote: Zcore13both of those guys will take 30, 40 or even 50 takes to get one right. They will tell people that they are practicing something and it may or may not work and then they will ask them to pick any card out of the deck. The person picture card out and the magician guess is what the card is. They've got a 1 out of 52 chance. 51 times they throw away the footage and one time they tape the shock person's reaction and put it on TV.

I saw that one, too, it is a common investment con. Send out predictions to 10000 investors, half up and half down. Then repeat to those you got right, then over and over until you get the one who thinks you are a stock guru who is always right.

Also an old sports Handicapper trick. Made the Mike Laskeys, Stu Feiners and Jim Feists of the world very rich.
Magicians are constantly pushing the limits to try to out do each other. This causes them at time to risk serious bodily injury and even death. Personally I'd rather see a good magician with sleight of hand skills as one doing a "gimmick" routine and risk his life.
Quote: Mikey75Fool us is a great show. There are some awesome guys out there performing some great routines. And as stated earlier fool us is as close to real magic as you will ever see. If your interested in magic at all you have to watch this show.

I am right there with you. CA on believe did a show where he walked a tight rope. How is that magic? Impressive, yes.. but not magic.

Just watched episode 5 and it is really good IMO. I am just amazed at some of things these people do.

Quote: GWAENot about Criss but is anyone watching America got talent. There are a few really good magicians.
I am, and I agree, very good magicians, though Mat Franco is in a class by himself. I think he has a good shot to win it all.
Quote: GWAEThe cell phone trick had to be a set up. There is just no possible way to make that happen. Maybe Mel B was in on it, I don't know. Again these things are just impossible without Adam Sandlers remote.
I think he had the phone on the back of his wrist by the time they got to the seating (he had long sleeves on and there was some misdirection/confusion unseating those 6 people) and he cut the seat in 2 strokes, cut once, jerk with the point still buried, cut the rest of the way. When he jerked, the phone (which was behind his hand and the knife at that point; he shook it down that far as he lowered the knife to the seat) got pushed into the stuffing as he continued cutting for her to dig out. However, that doesn't explain how they had the ring tone come from that area; I did notice that they didn't put the microphone down to the actual seat to prove it was ringing before he started cutting, though if he had the cell phone on him with a bluetooth microphone near it, and a speaker pre-set in that area, it could be done. As to seat 642, a magician can push/force any card at a person drawing one that he wants. He offered a very small spread; it could have been all the 6's to Howard, all the 4's to Heidi, and all the 2's to Howie.
Regardless whether I've sussed it out, it was very well done.

yes that all makes good sense, but even if that was all true it is still amazing how well they pull it off with out you really seeing anything. I have been to a few magic shows, some small and some large. I have been in the front row many times and I have yet to see a screw up.
Quote: GWAEI remember when he did that but I did not watch it. Someone else was also doing a big jump on the same night and I decided to watch that instead. That jump back down was insane. That had to be scary as hell. I wonder if he actually practiced it.
The big thump it made when he hit it going down makes me think he had to have been pretty close to being knocked out of control. That wasn't close to a gliding sound.

He did practice it, but not at Paris. There's video I just saw where they showed 30 seconds or so of the whole thing set up on scaffolding in a practice area somewhere. If you look for the 7 minute version of that jump rather than 90 seconds, it's in that.

I figured the phone that's recovered is not Mel B's phone. He then switches it back to her real phone later on, though I couldn't spot where. Getting it to ring, and putting the picture on a fake shouldn't be too hard. There is something odd about getting her to fish for the phone over the back of the chair, and I don't think that's just so she has her bum in the air and the equivalent of a short stick.
Still, very impressive... knowing a way it could be done, and actually doing it are far different things!

If you watch his sleeves, just after he takes (or fakes taking) the second picture, (the camera cuts away a couple times right then, but I think he swapped phones between pictures; the angle on the pic at the end looks to be the first one), he's pushing up both sleeves, the left already pushed up, then the right. I think he dropped a dummy in the water, then disappeared that one either into the hair dryer or palmed it as he stuck the hair dryer in.
Then, when he starts off the stage, gesturing to Mel to follow him to the sound, his right hand goes quickly into his pants pocket as he walks, and I think he's placing the real Mel phone from his sleeve to his pants pocket then. I think he had gotten it from his left sleeve, as that's the one that's back down to his wrist, where a moment before it was pushed nearly to the elbow.
So then, when he pulls out the big knife, he's gotten the phone from the same pocket up his sleeve, and goes from there.
But again, I don't know.
