The newspapers are reporting that the Naval base shooter heard "voices in my head" and that might be one of the reasons why he went on a rampage (or not).

I have questions about voices in someone's head.

When a person hears voices in his head are the voices his own in terms of tone? Is the voice someone else's voice? If the voice is someone else can it speak a foreign language? Are the Naval shooter's voices all American? Men? Women?

If someone thinks he is hearing the voice of a German is the German voice speaking proper German even if the person hearing the voice knows no German?

Would anyone like to voice an opinion?

My daughter Melanie is Schizoaffective . The voice she has occasionally heard is male and his name is Ryan. She can be talked down by my wife. Geodon is the drug that has been her savior. The last time she was hospitalized, 5 years ago, she lost all touch with reality.
She was putting glasses ofwater in all the windows at the mental hospital to keep the aliens out.

On my visits she would tell me that Hillary Clinton and Bill Gates were also confined there.

She recently had a side effect of facial Tardive Dyskinesia. Making faces that were getting progressively worse. Wriggling nose, eye brows lifting, sticking tongue out , etc. But despite the stares from strangers, her little daughters thinking she was just making funny faces, etc., this was preferable for her to hearing voices.

Luckily, vitamin therapy reversed the side effects.

I was like most people. Used to think something was wrong with people who had a mental illness. Ok to say your wife has mono or parkinsons, whatever. But never talk about mental illness. But we are all nothing but chemicals in a brain. Problem with depression is once the brain starts making those sort of chemicals, it will continue even after the source of that depression is gone.

I used to think I was a tuff guy. Until I had to make the call on ECT for Josie. Usually shock treatment works within first 10 treatments. Doctors give up at 15. Josie came back to me at 15.

Now you probably know more about mental illness than you wanted to !

Thanks for the info. Two people in my family are mentally ill, although not in the "voice-hearing" way. One is living somewhat as a 12-year-old even though 58 years old. One is potentially dangerous, living in a fantasy world, but we can do nothing for him until he does something awful --- and we have tried everything.

Now to something else. Twelve girls? Oh, my lord, that could be rough! (Seriously, you are the richest man!)

Frank and Buzz,

I like you guys and respect you very much.
I am sorry for your situations with family members, Buzz you are a rich man(without the cash as you stated).
Frank,I have enjoyed books and writing that you have done.
I am not going to go all southern baptist on you but I will submit that every life counts and that everyone is on Earth for a reason.
We are all made stronger by tragic events or situations in our lives.
One time I heard James Brown talking about Michael Jackson and he said it makes you wanna step back and thank God for all the blessings.
That is what we have to do if we are going to be there for our loved ones.
Fight every day and don't give up.
I am sure at one point both of you have examined these situations and maybe thought why does this happen to good people?
I have had many many deaths in my family along the past ten years,my 2 grandmothers, grandfather, little bro(22 y/o),my best friend(29 y/o),my cousin(17) and her mother my aunt(49),many others to add to the list.
I never ask God why,I ask how.How can we make everyday count, how can we move forward, how can we show the ones that are here we love them more than ever.
And then I listen.I am very very very patient, probably more so than most people.I hear that voice but it is not man or woman or German or whatever voice.I can't describe who but I know it's God answering me.

I have made some moves in my life that seem absolutely silly at the time but work out perfectly.Because I listen.I believe being a patient person is one of the best qualities one can have. When I get to vegas one day I'd love to swap stories with you guys or at any other venue we might be at.

I appreciate your contributions and enjoy the comraderie we have on this forum.I wish you guys the best.

Really?

Not my brother in law.

He's schizophrenic.

Constantly talks to himself, misunderstands reality, very aggressive, now obese and basically helpless.

His mom died recently; he lived with her all of his life, and boy howdy was she an enabler.

Poor gal, probably blamed herself for birthing such a screwed up, worthless P.O.S.

Now he lives in the family home, alone; we have a caretaker come in to assist him, but no power on earth can make him take his meds, so he's a Fruit Loop, 24/7.

Would you say the same about an elderly person needing constant care who has Alzheimer's? How about a child with severe Autism?

Reminds me of a scene from Deadwood. Card player
points at a drunk who just pissed himself and says:

it's the reason most people think it is.

You bet I would.

They're all burdens.

My wife and I are, quite frankly, tired of her insane brother and his craziness.

F*ck him.

He takes, takes, and takes, while giving NOTHING in return.

Let others, paid caregivers, deal with him.

FWIW, I tried reaching out to him, I tried compassion (believe it or not), all to no avail: he's selfish, self-absorbed, self-centered, mean, demanding and very unpleasant.

As an existential atheist, I firmly believe that there is no "reason" or "purpose" to anything in the universe, most especially our lives.

Your compassion is overwhelming.

Let me tell you from a person who once questioned people with mental disorders. It is CRUSHING to see a strong sane man break down into a shell of what he once was. My brother and I had to go through this with my father earlier this year.

Of course that sucks.

I never said it didn't.

But not all burdens are assumed willingly.

Heck, one reason I work is to earn the money to pay people to do things I don't want to do.

It's the American Way.

How could there be, it's silly. It's a very freeing experience
when you realize you aren't the center of the freaking
universe.

Actually, if the universe is infinite in all directions, you are

I have very personal experience with a loved one who heard voices. In the case of this person, s/he heard two voices in her head (not his/her own), one very good (Jesus), and one very evil (no name). The voices told him/her (and s/he believed) that s/he was born as someone else and that s/he was traded out for someone else at birth. There were a number of bizarre behaviors over the months that s/he heard the voices, none of them life threatening or particularly harmful until the final day.

In the end, there was a night where s/he told me that the voices were evil (s/he thought they were good) and that they had the power to kill him/her, and that someone else in the house was infested by demons and might kill me in my sleep.

That warranted the call to 911 and s/he spent a few nights in the local mental institution. S/he was diagnosed with psychosis. Because the voices weren't there for a longer time, schizophrenia was not the diagnosis. S/he takes an antipsychotic every day but if she goes off that medication, the voices return.

So, yeah, I have an opinion, because i've lived it.

I sure hate to hear that man.I will be praying for all you guys and your families. You know life deals us a lot of bad hands. We don't have the option to just fold and the hand be over.It is unfortunate when we must bear these burdens that everyone has spoke of on this topic.

Considering all that has been discussed I wonder if anyone believes in spirit/demon posession of these poor folks inflicted by these pains and problems.

Naw.

While they are unclear on how voices in the head get there, lots of antipsychotics will control dopamine and the voices usually immediately go away after a short length of time. It's brain chemistry mixed in with some bad experiences.

The sad thing about the S word, is that it will never get better. It's pretty much a hospice situation from the moment of a true diagnosis, much like alzheimers as mentioned. But worse in a way. At least with A it is a constant, S just becomes more and more difficult to deal with. The primary sufferr may respond well to a psychotropic for a while, but eventually the brilliance of the disease finds ways around the drug's pathways and he/she will have to be hospitalized again. I wish I had an answer or comfort, I don't. It is a rare disorder and in my experience only acts of love can help.

We shall see. I know that if it's caught early enough the chances for recovery are much higher. S/he may have to live with the voices and recognize them for exactly what they are. Frankly, I'm completely dreading that future.

auditory halucinations seem to be self developed coping mechanisms, much like these "alternate personalities" that patients develop with the help of therapists and patient websites. That fact that such alternate personalities are absurd seems irrelevant. The patient chooses them until such time as they choose not to hear them.

Its a question of secondary gain.

In a society such as the UK, they refuse to recognize multiple personality disorder and proceed against the license of any therapist who encourages such things. If the USA adopted such a stance, there would be a massive outcry from the various pharmaceutical and insurance-fed therapy industries.

Think of it as a bumper sticker: " I don't care what nine out of ten of the voices you hear tell you to do, if you come at me like a weirdo complaining that you are hearing voices, I will shoot and kill you."

Please don't dread, prepare. Use amazing things like sugar crisp apples when you need to. My thoughts of strength are with you. Different weeds might help now and then. Maybe try the stuff from Colorado with low tch and high xxx? Voices aren't necessarily S, sometimes they're just voices. Be well.

Sometimes that's possible, but it's not always that the brain is just receiving odd stimuli and able to sort it out, (such as looking in a mirror and with practice you can learn to adjust your motion to reverse actions to do things). The logic processing can be messed up as well.

Years ago I had a girlfriend who had what would be described generally as schizophrenia, though I never personally heard the actual diagnosis, and there may be more refined diagnosis nowadays. She was fine for a long time but started believing cameras were everywhere (not Vegas which would be true these days, but Texas).

It was emotionally draining to reason with her as it got worse. I eventually ended up taking her to her brother in another city and he got her appointments with a psych doctor. He already knew she had been ill before.

Most likely the treatment is much better now. As long as the person doesn't go off it anyway.

I don't mean to be the asshole but if it is S the mental stuff will find a way around the drug. Hope is the enemy of peace if it is S.

Generally that is not true. Schizophrenia is not a rare disorder, but it is misunderstood.

Drugs and CBT (Cognitive Therapy) are the typical course of action. Taking away the stressors that contribute to the disease also is extremely helpful, but not always possible.

With a grain of truth applied to a Jester's commentary...
"Its not the voices in your head... its wether or not YOU win the arguement".

A lady and two others were escorting a majority-aged patient (female) into a local Donut Shop. Upon One of the aids entering, he noticed the shop was filled with TV sets (all broadcasting CNN but in closed-caption format, and therefore silent). He walked out immediately, and I could see a discussion. Slowly all four entered. The patient went to the cooler and got a coca-cola soda. She caught sight of one of the TV's and started pointing. The other three came to her side immediatly and the patient was slowly escorted out.

I was curious about this and happened to be outside the next time. One of the aids answered my question, "Its the TV sets, they are a major trigger" (for her patient I presume), and if the sound was on, the patient would not enter, and they would have gone elsewhere.

This was recent, with the Chicago shootings, and other violent stories making CNN headline status, plus Colo. flooding rescues... rather intense stories.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

True S is a degenerative disease with no cause, only course and symptoms. "Mild" conditions that mimic S can be helped immensely with cognitive and rational therapies that are easier to do than growing your own less than THC dope. The point is we don't know what the case is here (sorry not talking about you while you are in the room) if it is S, it is hopeless and a sort of hospice situation.
Of course if there is hope (thymine dymers can show it i think) then pray, wish, act and try everything.
I'm involved in some autism studies and have drawn some correlations with S. I'm also in touch with any great teacher from a rimpashea to Albert Ellis folks if you need some peace.

What I don't get about alzheimer's victims families is how easily so many give up - it must be a fearful thing. Same for S. Nobody knows, but people are working on it. Let that be your hope.

Interesting question and i'm sorry i didn't reply to the OP until now, Frank.
We have many well known incidences like the guy who shot Reagan, the guy who shot Lennon hearing voices. I'm sure there are alillion nay, billison, nay ttrillion incidences of folks hearing shit that nevr lead to violence. You have an angel and a devil, of course you do. in the quiet time in making aa decisio0n do you never hear your own voice in your head? of course you do. It is called self.

What about the voice in your head that tells you to do something good for others? Sometimes you battle that voice; sometimes you give in and do a good deed. A person with that voice-print would not be insane. That is probably covered by the idea of a "stream of consciousness."

Or the voice that says, "I shouldn't eat all of that." To be contradicted by the voice that says, "Man, I love that chocolate cake." Then somewhere inside your head is the "will" to do one or the other.

The book "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" has an interesting theory about those voices in our heads.

The hardest point of dealing with mental illness is remembering the person you are dealing with at the time is not the person you love. They are someone in pain that you can not help. You can see the wheels about to come off, but can not do a damn thing about it.

I have already told babs this, so I might as well post it here too. Josie is going thru hard times right now. It is why I am not at G2E.

I pretended to Josie it did not matter and she pretended to believe me. I would prefer no replies or PM's OK. My daughter Mary Jo sometimes visits this forum. THANKS Don't worry. We are both survivors.
