When the Britney Spears phenomenon exploded a dozen or so years ago, I remember saying to myself, "Gee, you don't even need talent to be popular anymore, just looks." But nowadays, it seems that you don't need looks either! Case in point: Miley Cyrus.
Seriously, why is this girl popular? She can't sing, can't dance, and is not attractive in the least (not face-wise or body-wise). Is it just me though?

I don't think Miley is ugly, but she looked a lot more attractive to me when she looked like innocent Hannah Montana.

I dunno, she's not conventionally beautiful in the way that we expect our images to appear. She doesn't appeal to me, but I don't think that she is unappealing.
She isn't very talented at what she is doing now, but she's not untalented. The vocal fry is something that all the kids do these days, but she sang this when she was 18.

It's really sad how far standards have fallen since the days of yesteryear. Stars from the Golden Age may have had their own share of problems, but at least they had genuine talent and conducted themselves with class (for the most part) when out in public.
For example, can you picture the Andrews Sisters acting like Miley??? To be fair, there are a small handful of celebrities today that I can respect. Like Taylor Swift. Even though I don't care for her music, I do concede that she has legitimate talent. Too bad there aren't more like her.

I watched the VMAs and I felt creeped out. But Miley has to escape the Disney bubble somehow, and this pretty much did it. Brittney and Lindsay also had to get out of the Disney bubble and go from kid star to adult star. Males tend to do it more gracefully.

I think she looks better when she looked like the kid role model with long hair. Only slightly good looking. Now that she has piercings, tattoos, and short hair I'm not attracted at all. Some guys like that I guess but no thanks

The image is definately Beauty -----> Beast over time. Appearance is a toss-up.

I was mainly referencing the time she was legal in my own state. 2010 and later. I sorta forgot that Hannah Montana existed significantly before that, my apologies. Miley today just looks horrible. But at least she has proved she is a "freak" I guess...lol

Hmmm... Britney is/was an OK dancer, but her singing is really no better than anyone else's. (I heard a girl singing karaoke the other day who had more talent.) Wiki is much less kind to her, which I used because I never heard of her until now. The pictures on her page make her look much older than 28. And the picture I am really talking about, she was only 26/27 at the time, but she looks 36/37 in it. Her wiki reminds me why I hate models, they usually look like crap when they aren't caked with makeup.

I usually have little argument with boymimbo, but I only have to look at Macaulay Culkin or Justin Bieber to say that it's not whether they're boys or girls. There are lots of others through the years of both sexes. They're in this coccoon, surrounded by sycophants and people looking to make money off of them by trading on their bankability, making ridiculous money, and trying to predict (if they even think about it at all) from within their bubble how what they do will be perceived outside. Women have, loaded on top of that, the double standard about going from innocent girls who are not to be thought of as sexual beings to WILF's, but still need to maintain bankability. Some who recovered after making serious errors in that direction include Brooke Shields and Winona Ryder. Some didn't recover.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.
