Quote: treetopbuddyDid anybody find the "stay in place or settle in place" order in Boston and surrounding area a little much? A 19 year old held a million or more hostage? Why so much fear? I'm guessing I'll be the lone wolf on this one....
Not a lone wolf. Once he was on the run and known to be around Watertown it seemed silly to place the city of Boston on lockdown. But public officials take no blame for costing the reported $300 million the lockdown cost local businesses. They would have taken the blame if he somehow eluded the dragnet and went to Boston and caused more death and destruction. So what does the public official who wants to be re-elected do? You found out....
What is the number on lost revenues due to people having to spend an extra hour or more every time they get on a goddamn airplane?
I mean if you want to complain about the negative effects of terrorism on the economy, let's talk about lost time of business people just getting from point a to point b.
Quote: AhighI think that putting a number on lost revenues during this period of time is sort of fool-hearty.

I agree with your second and third points wholeheartedly!
Similarly, it was correct to declare the entire country a no-fly zone on 9/11/11. It made that last plane flying kinda conspicuous.
Quote: DJTeddyBearI think it was the right thing to do. Not only for the safety factor, but simply to make it easier to find the guy. I mean, it's kinda easy to move about unnoticed in a crowded city. But when the streets are deserted, one guy moving around stands out like a sore thumb.

the wingnut was found by a citizen (non law enforcement type) after the the order to "stay in place" was lifted......he was also a smoker. He was forced outside by the old lady for his smoke break......
Quote: DJTeddyBearI think it was the right thing to do.
Fortunately this is a hypothetical. But lets say he evaded capture, and he was able to drive to some other terror cell out of state undetected. How long do you keep the city of Boston shut down? Once it was known he left the city of Boston the city should have been open for business.
Oh. I missed that part.Quote: treetopbuddythe wingnut was found by a citizen (non law enforcement type) after the the order to "stay in place" was lifted..........
But my logic sounds good, right?
just to see if they can. Obama wants that power real
bad..

I viewed the whole episode as a test......it was law enforcements "dream week"........
I feel the loss of freedom since 9/11 and now reinforced by the Boston situation are the worse loss of rights for all of North America since the American revolution. The arguement that 'if it saves one life it is worth it' is a crock of s--t and simply a power grab by authorities.
Quote: kenarmanIt appears to me be totally over the top. From a civil liberties position it is terrible. If any rights you thought you had can be taken away on a whim by a democratic government what will we have left if true dictators get into power.
.
Gov'ts wet their pants over having this kind of
power. Obama salivates over it, he wants an
internet kill switch so bad he can taste it. The
desire to control the public and control the media
runs strong in politicians.

The... "if it saves one life", B.S., is an idea that is widely accepted in this county today. Boston and surrounding areas are the epicenter of these wrongheaded ideas, so it's no surprise to see the Bostonians fall in line. I'm sure a small segment of the population didn't like it but knew a severe beat down was headed their way if they didn't follow orders.

It was interesting that some of the early news coverage I saw in the morning was from Boston Commons and there were people strolling around. The reporters commented on them. Very few people though.

Forgive my ignorance, but I don’t have TV and am out of the loop.
Are you saying there was threat of use of force if people went outside?

I'm betting it wouldn't have been a good time for open carry.

Gov. Duval Patrick imposed a "stay in place" order.....I'm guessing that an "order" is something the law enforcement takes seriously. The beat down would not necessarily result in the use of force. An arrest maybe, force if offender is not compliant.

It was definitely implied. Thats the impression I
got, anyway. Stay inside or else.

It works too when you want to take out your Daddy's nemesis. Yeah, those are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Yeah. Let's kill or maim a few hundred thousand innocent Iraqis and a few thousand young American soldiers and spend a couple of trillion to boot.
The desire to control the public and control the media runs strong in politians, indeed.
What the f**k did Obama have to do with Boston?

Lol, city folk and their crazy ways.
Quote: rxwineI'm betting it wouldn't have been a good time for open carry.
“In the woods” is the only time good for open carry. But I gotta admit, as someone with no TV or radio, if I walked out of my Boston apartment into empty streets, I would’ve ran back inside for my 870 drooling and out of my mind in excitement that the zombie apocalypse was finally happening =D
Sorry if language offends anyone...but it just felt right.
The city did lift the order before the guy was found.
Quote: vendman1The worst part of the "stay in place" order, which essentially shut down the entire Boston Metro area for a whole day, is that we essentially handed terrorism a victory when that sort of thing happens. The goal of terrorism is to disrupt the status quo...to wreck havoc on society and the establishment. When we shut down a whole metro area to look for this gigantic dick head...he wins. The way to beat terrorism is to shrug it off and get back to business. Fuck Em.

Agree 100%.
Quote: boymimboThat was the most amazing thing to me - the stay in place order was followed.
Also agree. I wonder what would've happened in a redneck city.

Suspects chased through the streets by pick-up trucks?
Quote: rxwineSuspects chased through the streets by pick-up trucks?
In a redneck city/state they would have first gone after the Governor for imposing the sissy rule and then the bomber. Both would be rounded up by sundown.

As a west coast liberal, I find nothing liberal about restricting the movement of people, and the whole idea of doing so rather scary.
A couple of Dunkin' Donuts were allowed to remain open during the whole ordeal to accommodate rescue workers. No cop jokes. :)

It is scary, and its a power gov't wants. Controlling the
populace, like they do in China, is a very big tool. They
don't have that here, as well they shouldn't. We aren't
sheep.
Quote: SOOPOOWe had a surprise snowstorm a few Octobers back, and since the trees still had leaves many came crashing down, essentially blocking off many roads, and causing power outages to many neighborhoods. The 'order' was put out that only 'essential' travel was allowed. As a physician hospital worker I was permitted to go to my hospital, but on the way home I went to stop at my in-laws, to make sure they were ok, help them shovel, help them with their generator, etc... On my way there I was stopped by a cop who, when I told him the truth, told me I must go directly home! I told him I would, sensing trying to reason with him would do me no good, then went to my in laws.... In essence the 'government' decided for me what was 'essential' or not, in theory they weighed the 'public good' over my needs, and the needs of my family.
LOL the October storm was the first thing I thought of, as well as, I dunno, the Gowanda/Silver Creek flood of ’09, flood of ’96, Blizzard of ’99….
If I have somewhere to go, I’m going, simple as that. I’m thankful for the warning, but I’ll decide what I can do, thank you very much.
The flood of ’09 was the scariest. I came into it at about 6a, before any emergency response was present. Had no idea is was going on until I was in it. My 5,500lb, lifted, 4x4, quad cab, HEMI truck actually floated down the road. That was sketchy. But even if there was a ban, pfft. I had to get to work.
