My suggestion: give them one thread. Lock any other thread that discusses the issue. Teach everyone to keep that conversation in that thread.
I bet even this one will get opinions one way or the other but I am being careful not to go there...
I know before opening the thread I don't care about gun control.
Having not read anything about it, there's nothing to dislike.

The problem is that the gun control thread is rather contained; EVERY thread about craps seems to devolve into that other discussion even if it starts being about something different...

And this is wrong ... why?
Do you play craps, Ron? Or you're just reading about craps even though you don't care and then complaining about it.
I just voted that I dislike the craps discussions the most because I don't know anything at all about the gun discussions.
I'm not complaining about threads ABOUT craps; I am just saying that every one of them seems to be headed in a discussion of one specific craps topic lately. There are lots of things about craps I enjoy reading about...how people bet, dealers, playing conditions, etc.
You are not confused at all--you are a smart guy.

No, seriously. I dislike a lot of those threads too!
We have a thread where the majority of people say that they believe advantage play craps is impossible.
If it were the kind of thing where a proof were existing either way, maybe there would be more interest in other subjects.
Even if the Wizard put his foot down and said, "I have enough evidence that I now believe advantage play is possible, the debate is over" a lot of these discussions could go away.
This didn't just start here on this forum. Other forums that talk about craps don't have these pointless arguments where people claim they believe in unproven theories about what's impossible.
It's pretty much just something very special about this forum where all the intelligent people insist that something is impossible without any way to prove that their belief system is not flawed.
It makes for some entertainment, but I'd like to get to a point where people can accept that it's possible and move on to other conversations myself.
(2) The threads that focus on whether dice control/influencing is or is not achievable, advantageous, etc. are very much like the discussions of religion. Until someone absolutely proves their position to the satisfaction of an opponent (never gonna happen), the argument is just going to continue.
(3) For the past several months, every discussion of craps that goes beyond half a dozen posts, even something as innocent as the difference in the HE on a place bet 5 vs. a hard 10, seems to degenerate into a discussion/argument about dice control. I've had way more than enough of that, so I stop reading any thread as soon as the topic comes up.
(4) There have only been one or two threads that I have noticed on the topic of gun control. I haven't read any of the posts in those threads; the whole topic seemed ripe for heated, irrational arguments. (Is that the way it turned out?) I really don't care to read any thread that is primarily members arguing/fighting/attacking rather than asking/informing/discussing.
I didn't vote, because there wasn't an option for "All of the above."

#1 - Almost guaranteed, but I and FrG I think have learned much from each other, both being from polar opposite sides of the subject. Some threads go bad, but many have had very good discussion in them.
#4 - There were certainly moments where the thread went silly and I almost thought it was going to end itself, but the gun thread had some great moments and is still kicking. Was there fighting? Sure. Attacking? Not so much. Informing / discussing? In spades.
There are many. One interpretation for this thread is, "Ahigh is an ass who constantly posts about craps and I don't like him at all. Who's with me on this?"

So this thread is about you? I thought it was an opinion on which kind of threads people liked the least. You may post frequently to one of those choices (as a poster to one or the other of the threads/types of threads)--and I may be also-- but it isn't about us individually, just how the threads seem to go off on a tangent and never return.
To me, it is like the God/No God thread...one thread is okay but how would it be if every single thread became a discussion of the same thing?
You've had more than one? Or is that part of the cognitive dissonance?Quote: AhighYeah, it must be confirmation of my recent clinical diagnoses from a member of this forum that I am a narcissist: "it's all about me."

ME! I voted it in the poll...
1) This thread
2) HB challenge thread
Quote: boymimboOr a gun control thread. Perhaps both should collide and like matter and anti-matter, destroy each other.
Let's harness that energy in a controlled manner; I've always wanted to visit Bajor.
