Of interest to me...
I am looking forward to seeing if the Canadiens’ Jarred Tinordi makes it into the regular line-up this year--he's the seventh defenseman right now. I coached him when he was 7; in spite of that, he's made it to the NHL at least on a part-time basis.

Very cool! I watch a ton of Canadiens hockey. Hope to see him out there.

That's a many million dollar question!!
Hockey demands at least some level of two-way play even from offensive superstars...yet some don't get it...you have to score a lot more goals to get away with not playing defensively at all...

Now down to 246...what happened??? :P
11 minutes until Blues puck drop!!! My g/f probably wants to pull her hair out already... :-\

My son was lucky enough to play on a team with 5 sons of NHL players/coaches. Most of the fathers helped the kids on the ice during practices when they could; it was a great deal and we made a lot of friends. Heck, I got my only "professional" hockey job out of it--helping at an AHL youth camp one summer. It was magical for me to see how talented those guys really are...it was beyond what one cane even imagine sitting in the seats.
I saw one of them knock a puck from between two players as they were passing it back and forth...from 180 feet away! He was a scorer in the NHL...
I am following with interest one player in the NHL, one in the ECHL, and one at a major college...fun stuff...

aww they took away his assist on the first goal. That is just silly.
I'm the last one to start softening sports with stupid rules, but having recently removed my shoulder from its socket, I tense up whenever I see these guys tie each other up just before striking the boards at 30mph. Keep em stiff so you can still play the boards, but attach them in a way that they have flex, similar to the glass just above.
Whenever I see two guys jam into the corner all tied up, I experience a full body cringe. They hurt when you hit them. Hitting them upside down, backwards, and all twisted up is gonna result in some co-pays.
Forget the idea. As always, the Germans beat me to it.
Quote: FaceDon't let the employment of John Scott fool you. They already did away with goon squads.
I thought teams needed "enforcers" to protect their stars from being targeted.

/sigh. It's.... complicated. I'll spare you the long history and just pick it up in the 70's.
The 70's is where the "goon" emerged. Previous to that, fighting was just a natural part of hockey, a way for the players to police themselves when 2min didn't cut it. It wasn't until the 70's when teams like the Broad Street Bullies turned the act of fighting into a core strategy. Fighting was no longer an instance, it was everything. And that's what a goon is. An enforcer at least has skills, he's just a brute on top of it. Howe is a good example. He was gonna finish a check, and if you didn't like it, you can receive some face punches. But he was also a guy you wanted on the ice as much as possible because he was good. Enforcer he may be, but when you were down by one with minutes left, he could tote that wagon.
A goon is just that. Guys like Grimson, Probert, Schultz. They didn't even need sticks; they weren't out there to play hockey. They were there to hurt you if called upon, and kill you if they could. A goon has no value outside of the pain they can inflict.
The full team brawls of the 70's led to the Third Man In rule. Now, you still need a goon, but maybe not 7 or 8 of them.
Then came the Instigator rule. You could still fight, but going to great lengths to cause one was verboten. As a result, psychopaths like Grimson became a liability. A goon has no self control, and the threat of 2min plus game misconduct reigned in their usefulness.
Then, of course, came the same zero-tolerance safety stuff that's killing / has killed the NFL. Less and less brutality is accepted, more and more rules are put into place, and suddenly, the guy that can't skate, can't pass, and can't shoot also can't fight. He is useless, so he dies off.
I remember even in the 90's, every team had one. Twist for the Blues, Probert for the Wings, Domi for the Leafs, McSorely for the Kings, and Grimson, and Hunter, and Kocur, and Manson, and Odjick, and Ray, and Boogaard... Now? Name me one goon today that isn't John Scott. Who out there has no skills except for inflicting pain? There ain't one. And the closest thing to one, like the Leafs' Orr, isn't a shadow of the sick, sick bastard that a Grimson or a Probert was.
The goon is dead. Enforcers? Sure. And instigators, and tough guys, and pests. But guys like Tiger Williams will never be seen again. It's the evolution of the NHL. "The Hammer" need not apply.
Yeah, them damn sissies and concussions. Really, Face, Really ? ? ?
To say nothing of goalies wearing masks. What is this world coming to ? Next thing you know baseball players will wear something more than just a baseball cap when batting !
And what's up with those fire suits for race car drivers ?
And running into the punter ? No grabbing the face mask, You are right Face, ruining the sports.
Many of the modern rules have been necessary annoyances. Soft walls at NASCAR, for instance. But punitive penalties for unintentional and incidental contacts to the head is asinine. Brushed the helmet with two fingers? FIRST DOWN!
Gimme a break. That makes about as much sense as outlawing fighting in hockey.
I am still trying to figure out why you can not bump a receiver after 5 yards ? I mean other than deciding to make the quarterback the star, rather than a running back ?
Don't bump him, put your hand where he can't see the ball, go for the ball yourself. What a crock. Night Train Lane must be spinning in his grave !
And Twister!!! Those were the days...he also played on one of my favorite "old school" teams...the Nordiques!

face shielding is one the dumbest penalties in football. There is no reason why they shouldn't be able to run around with their arms in the air.

If you think face shielding is the dumbest, you haven't been watching enough football lol.
I caught some of the Bills-Pats contest. I dunno how anyone watches that trash. I saw a scrum where the Bills stopped a big run play. A Bill jumps up and gives his teammate a congratulatory whack on the helmet. Nowhere near the typical foolish displays those idiot monkeys make after performing a completely average tackle, just a "hell yeah" pat on the head.
Flag on the play. Personal foul, 15yds, FIRST DOWN!
This is America's #1 sport? Lol. Y'all can have it.
