The man may have been crazy, but he had class. I would have loved to share a Martini with Howard Hughes.
My question is how a man who was so clearly incapacitated could make so much money. I think I am reasonably sane, but I have no idea how to get prosperous, let alone rich.

And there lies the problem. I personally think your brain needs to be wired slightly differently to look at things a different way and see how to make money out of it.

There are no casinos in Hawaii.Quote: Croupier58:Las Vegas is home to the largest community of Hawaiians outside of Hawaii.
That's because the native Hawaiians voluntarily joined the USA. We didn't have to steal their land so now there are no reparations to displaced natives, and therefore no Indian casinos in Hawaii.
I'm not sure how that affects the number of Hawaiians living in Vegas, but it should put a smile on Doc's face that I bumped up the post count.
As for Hawaiians voluntarily joining the USA, I think there is a segment of the island population that vehemently disagrees with that, claiming the initial territorial status (not the statehood) was achieved by conquest or by extortion imposed on the monarch. I think that segment actually campaigns for independence.
Toothy grin smiley.
Really? Interesting.
Have they always felt that way, or just since they saw all the Native American tribes on the mainland making a ton of cash in their casinos?

You are quite welcome.
And I know that it would help displace the other thread, but I would feel that was cheating slightly. I would rather do the bulk post and have peoples discussion make up the rest.

I know I am behind schedule but have been hitting the OT hard at work for a little extra spending money with my trip coming up, and the weakened state of the GBP. Bring back the glory days of 2007, where for a short time 2USD = 1GBP. Those were the days. Everything was half price to me.

I'm a 2nd amendment advocate so this one is of particular interest to me. I guess the locals can answer this, if any of you are gun owners: How true is this? The way I could see it is: "concealable" means handgun and Clark County could be one of the places in the country with an unconstitutional no-handgun law. In other words, since something like a rifle or shotgun isn't "concealable" you are legally allowed to bring it in in order to get registered. In retrospect, this could actually be a devious way to keep handguns illegal without actually making them illegal.
I suspect it's not too deep, but not sure.
Also, I wonder how often they scoop all the coins out. (people throw coins in, I know they do)
Quote: rxwineAlso, I wonder how often they scoop all the coins out. (people throw coins in, I know they do)
I saw a show on TV, I think on the Discovery Channel, which said they use divers for routine maintenance of the fountains. They can scoop up coins that way, too.
In other areas? I have no idea.
On a related note, the lake uses recycled 'grey' water.
Grey water is water from sinks and showers, that gets filtered and recycled.
Water from 'other sources', called black water (although, I'd call it BROWN water), goes to the sewer system.

On a related note, the lake uses recycled 'grey' water.
51:Contrary to urban myth, the lake is not filled with treated greywater from the hotel. The lake is actually serviced by a freshwater well that was drilled decades prior to irrigate a golf course that previously existed on the site.
or at least, so says Wikipedia.
A mega update is coming later today.
It was also where I heard the term 'black water' and immedialty thought, that should be 'brown water'.
Quote: DJTeddyBearReally? Well that urban myth, wherever it was that I heard it, was the only time I ever heard the term 'grey water'....
It was also where I heard the term 'black water' and immedialty thought, that should be 'brown water'.
In many places it's common to use grey water for watering plants and gardens, as it cuts down in overall water usage. Black water always goes to treatment plants, and what's left is dumped to the nearest river, lake or ocean.
I think I have seen the programme you mentioned, I think it was "How do they do that" on Discovery. I had the same thought regarding Black water. And it was a good enough line to use twice :P

I find it quite interesting that the only posted comment (on the page you linked), claims that the Las Vegas Sun's report is basically a completely incorrect distortion of what actually happened.
I, of course, have no idea which version is correct, if either. But it is frequently entertaining to read all the various ways a story is presented; the newspapers don't necessarily get the basic facts correct when they have a message they want to send. That might have happened in this instance.
Croupier gave up on that plan a while ago.Quote: rdw4potusSo.....1 day, 50 facts to go?:-)
Maybe he'll have 50 while he's in Vegas, and report them when he gets home.
Then again, he may just have fifty stories about his experiments with the first fact he discussed....
A few of these are slightly non Vegas but Im a desperate man now, so expect lots of filler.

Hmmm... The King of Hearts is also the Suicide King.
Was the original artist trying to suggest that men with moustaches lead happier lives?
Howard Hughes wasn't always incapacitated. He surrounded himself with men who neither smoked nor drank. (Nor gambled, by the way). He was in the entertainment industry and that has always been a strange field. A tremendous slice of the economy and so lawless that when a maid found a corpse a movie studio was called several hours before the police were. Fatty Arbuckle's agent ruined Arbuckle's career for ten grand. Movie studios keep more sets of books than any other industry. The entertainment industry has often declared war before the Congress has. Its that powerful.
Howard Hughes was also a pioneer aviator. When you are in at the creation of an industry, it helps to get rich. When a court ordered Howard Hughes to show up in person or lose TWA, he chose to lose his massive block of shares in TWA.
>I think I am reasonably sane, but I have no idea how to get prosperous, let alone rich.
Before making a fortune perhaps it is necessary to lose one's sanity. J. Paul Getty started out as a wildcatter. He had his first lease at a favorable price because he bid thru a beard who intimated all the other wildcatters into not bidding at all. He paid the beard off with a cigar!
I enjoyed this thread, and am sad that the list was never finished. I'd like your permission to complete it with some tidbits I have been collecting.
