I understand an attorney posted an ad in this section and it got flagged off the forum. He sent me the text of his ad, which was perfectly fine. If this kind of over-flagging continues I will have to make it more difficult for posts to be busted. The down side of that is that we'll all have to put with more from trolls and spammers.

When in doubt, don't flag.

Perhaps posts to the "commercial" category can have a different color header or something to alert readers.

It was clearly an advertising message, in part. I would have flagged it if I ever did that - don't even know how. So free advertising for.....just who?

It sounds like you need a "quarantine" subforum, that is only visible to admin. When a post is flagged, it should get moved to the quarantine instead of getting completely wiped out. That way you could restore the posts that you don't want removed.

Hey Wiz, how about posting what he purports to have posted. Are they necessarily the same?

I use the [Recent Threads] link to look at the forums, thus I rarely notice which forum contains a particular thread. I can see where this would cause some advertisements to look like spam since people may not pay attention to the line that indicates the forum where it was posted.

Anyone can advertise in the Kiosk : Plug your Las Vegas business interests here. No Gambling Ads

I would suggest the Kiosk doesn't allow flagging. Or has a slightly different rule set. But that probably requires code changes (or making the Kiosk the same as the FSZ...)

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was posted either this morning or yesterday morning.

The REAL reason it got flagged from all areas, including the Kiosk, is because the identical post appeared in three of the sub-forums.

That sort of thing, particularly from a new menber (is he new?) generally does not get received warmly on ANY Forum.

ON SECOND THOUGHT...

As I typed that, it occured to me that I am thinking about a completely different post.

I was about to flag it, when I remmebered to check where it was. Since it was in the Kiosk, I left it alone.

I am a regular reader and poster to this forum. All I was trying to do is let everyone know about the radio show since we discuss many of the topics and questions the members post on here and I wanted to let everyone know they were welcome to call in and give your opinion.

Didn't know it was going to be a big deal since I posted it in the Kiosk forum, which was designed to promote Las Vegas businesses.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm confused - you were promoting a Las Vegas business? Your law firm offices in LV?

Yes. I am an attorney in Las Vegas. The firm is located in downtown Las Vegas. The radio show is done out of a local radio station in Las Vegas.

Oops, I was out of line, then. How about posting your business number again so if I ever hit megabucks I can call you after it is denied due to machine failure. I will put in my billfold and access it if I can send you someone.

As I typed that, it occured to me that I am thinking about a completely different post.

Now that it's been revived, I can honestly say that I WAS originally thinking of a different post.

I didn't flag this one but in fact had planned on returning to the post in question to check it out.

Thanks for reviving it.

That is a good point that most people aren't aware or don't care what category a post is in. There is indeed a looser standard for some categories, like the Kiosk and Free Speech Zone. The ideas about different colors, or just disabling flagging for those categories, are good. Let me confer with webmaster JB about this, although he is very busy with another project.

Until then, if you post something in the Kiosk or FSZ you may wish to state so at least in the body of the post, if not the title, to warn those with an itchy flagging finger.

Same here. When I read that post, I thought it was inappropriate for this forum. Then I saw that it was in the Kiosk and accepted that it was OK for that category. Personally, I would prefer that ads not show up in recent threads, but that viewpoint wouldn't be very hospitable to advertisers, I suppose.

Is it spam just to post? I thought this was a space where you should share our local business? The title of this thread is: Plug your Las Vegas business interests here. NO INTERNET GAMBLING ADS.

I admit the subtitle should say this, but prior permission from management must be obtained first. We don't like it when newcomers come along and start promoting their business interests in the first post. The Kiosk section is more for members in good standing.

Hi, Entirele.

Beneath and to the right of all posts is a flag option in a gray box. A post that doesn't meet forum standards can be flagged by any member. Supposedly, when it gets a certain number of flags the offending post disappears. Does it work? The claim is that it does. Names in green cannot be flagged because, well, they're in green. I strongly disagree with this. Even though we know no one in green would ever post anything untoward, I feel the option should still be in place.

That's the short version, Entirele. Use this site's search function and enter "flagging posts" to find a lot of articles on this subject. Some of it goes back a few years an may not be completely accurate.

I don't care that moderators can't be flagged. If a moderator goes off the rails, there are other ways to complain and have action taken. I am sure two things would happen--it would be noticed and commented on and people would PM ownership about the issue.

Maybe it "should" be different, but this is the forum we live in for a few minutes at a time and we are allowed to disagree with each other!
