I would want a benchmark of comparison to Cellini's book and if he gives anything over and above what is there.

The Wiz chose his words carefully in reviewing the
book, if there was anything there that was revolutionary
I'm sure he would have mentioned it.

But it's not drivel? :)

My drivel was directed towards the advertising of the book and the exorbitant claims made as well as the pricing. I will not quite
go with Bob's 12.95. But i did bet a member here that the correct price would be closer to $9.99 than to $90 and i stand by that.
I must be getting soft in my old age. Let SOOPOO off the hook for $90 and let the forum member out when he realized he had the short end of the stick. Even had TELIOT graciously offer to set a fair price.

T Dane will hopefully relist the book on Ebay with BLACKJACK in the listing heading so he might get more than 2 views this time.
Me and Evenbob, LOL

And printed books are going the way of DVDS and CDS. I sell all 3 on Amazon. This would be a great title for an EBOOK.
And allow T Dane to offer it at a good price and still be rewarded for his work

I think it is a fair debate as to whether the cost of this book is worth it. This of course depends on one's individual circumstances. Professional player? etc. Each player will have to determine that for himself. But as I stated earlier in this thread after participating in a chat with T Dane, there is no doubt he is the real deal and very knowledgeable about his profession. Sadly is he too sharp. :( This fine interview by Richard Munchkin, also confirms this. I personally found the information concerning license plate recognition both interesting and disturbing.

That interview says it all, with regards to T Dane's reputation. Munchkin asked some very specific questions that have answers that do not appear elsewhere in print, and T Dane answered them all fully and accurately. Some of the things he mentioned I personally learned the hard way, which of course means that it came at the cost of exposure or and EV source being shut off. That's not a recommendation for the book, but to blindly accuse him of being a fraud is clearly a foolish thing to do, as illustrated by Munchkin's interview.

Good interview. I thought it somewhat disingenuous on Dane's
part that he does his job and gets rid of a woman counter, than
runs into her in another casino and feels bad he was the one
responsible for getting her backed off. He should have felt proud.

There was nothing here that I didn't know or hadn't seen elsewhere.
The choke point thing was discussed on the last Cheating Vegas,
how Aria was the first Vegas casino with choke points for cameras
built into the floorplan. Thats got to make things easier for surveillance.
The license plate thing is old news, especially in the midwest. They
have been following AP's to the parking lots for years. And no, a
casino cannot call the DMV and get info on a plate anymore than you
or I can. They have to know somebody in law enforcement, just like
in the movies.

I like how he said the casinos aren't at all proactive in staying one
step ahead of AP's. They don't do anything, try to learn anything
new, until the AP's make the first move. Then the casino reverse
engineers what the AP's are doing and puts in place procedures
to deal with them. This is known as the lazy way to fight 'crime'.
Don't do anything to figure out your weak spots, don't do anything
at all until you're forced to by the 'criminals' themselves. Its the
reason AP's get away with so much, the people trying to stop them
are completely unmotivated to do anymore than the bare minimum
needed to keep their jobs.

Its just as I've always said. Underpay people, as casinos do, and all
you have is a bunch of unmotivated employee's watching the clock
for their next break and how long it is till the shift ends. Perfect
scenerio for AP's who are always thinking ahead and trying to stay
one step ahead of the casino.

Bob , all it takes is a girlfriend in DMV. Even bails bondsmen don't have a problem running a plate.

Point is, you have to have somebody on the inside.
And the girlfriend is taking the chance of losing a
really good job if she gets caught. Plate info is made
hard to get for a multitude of reasons. One of them
being, getting spotted in your new Mercedes by a
crook. If he could easily run your plate, he'd know
all about where you live and could target your
house because your elderly or handicapped.

Don't casinos have on-site police? We have the Sheriffs but a couple rooms down. Ping a plate, send it to them, they put out a radio blast, and the coppers are waiting for the crims in the driveway when they get home.

Oh, we already know in some cases. Good ol' player's card ;) In cases where we don't, it depends on the nature of the incident, but yes, almost always. Keep in mind, this isn't for AP stuff, but rather for criminal acts. As the governing body, the Sheriffs forward the info along after they obtain it.

I think, though, that this isn't how your typical corporate casino handles things. Many of the things both posted here, and that I've learned from visiting corporate surveillance, vary greatly from what we do here.

Yes, but being an AP isn't a criminal act. Can
you get an AP's plate and ask your cop pals
to give you his info, thats what I want to know.

Sorry, guess I jumped in and didn't realize the topic of conversation.

No. Or at least I assume no. We've never been out of options enough where it was even thought of, as far as I know. I also think that could possibly be illegal, so I've never tried to call in a favor. Whenever we want to know who someone is, we just follow them around. It usually comes out.

Micro-review, since so many on here practically demanded it:

It's a pretty solid book, filled with most of the info that APs already know (that surveillance thinks we don't know? Sweet!), but there is certainly new material in here. It's thicker than Cellini and DeCarlo, and a little lighter than McDowell, with little to no filler. The information is somewhat more current than the others, but it is also dated to the point where I wonder if the author still works in the industry or has since moved on to other areas of expertise. Some items of interest were conspicuously absent.

Is it worth the money? To APs making at least the cover price of the book per hour, absolutely. If you make your living from AP, you absolutely can not afford to NOT read every single book on AP that is released. If this book buys me 10 minutes at the tables over the course of a career, it's paid for itself. For recreational or lazy players, it's not worth much. There are very few things in the book that stood out as money-makers for me, but even simple reminders of stuff that I already knew are valuable, especially when framed in a modern context (Cellini has been gone for years--RIP).

Warning to readers: several "sensitive" subjects are covered in this book. I WISH these techniques were as easy to apply as the book makes them look! To be fair, the author admits that his examples are purposefully simplified. All I can say is that you should not develop any ideas about getting rich quick based on the examples provided in the book, as you will be sorely disappointed (and likely a lot poorer financially).

Overall: worth a look for serious APs and curious rich people; not a worthwhile investment for most.

Thats what I got out of the review. For every positive,
and they weren't very positive, there was a negative.
90 bucks is 90 bucks, no matter how much you make a
year. Overpaying for something just because you can is
never a wise investment. Value is value.

What you took from the review of not representative of what I wrote, in case anyone reads it that way. The purchase was personally +EV for me, but it is likely -EV for most. Those who will get value from it know who they are.

I got something out of the interview T Dane did
with Munchkin. It was something I already knew,
he just reaffirmed it. Its that surveillance isn't
proactive, they never try and think ahead of AP's.
They just wait around for the latest AP move and
take measures against it. For this reason surveillance
is always a step or two behind, a day late and a
dollar short. The translation being, they don't get
paid enough to give a shit. Which is something
I've been saying for years.

Take the FBI, for instance. They typically head hunt
people in the top 10% of their class in college, and
pay them enough to find ways to stay ahead of the
criminal element. Casinos do the opposite. They hire
people who are satisfied with doing a crappy job
for 12 bucks an hour and who cares if they're proactive
or not. You get what you pay for.

I'm still in shock to see he actually saw some positive. I didn't think that was possible. Bob World seems to be an entirely negative, misanthropic universe.

I would likely enjoy reading the book, but not being an AP I don't need to spend that kind of money just to satisfy my curiosity. Thank you for the review!

I thank you Lonesome Gambler for that fine, fair and objective review and sharing your thoughts, which many of us in the AP community value. Is it worth $90. Well that has always been a judgement call, and will vary according to each individual's circumstances. But it is funny, almost to a person, most members of the AP community, that read with an open mind have found things of value and interest in Mr Dane's work.

Now, EvenBob, not surprisingly sees no value in it. Of course, like most topics, he didn't go in with an open mind. His mind was made up long ago, and now, he insists on stomping on other peoples opinions and telling you for the hundredth time, what he thinks, even though he has not read the work.

I would love to see just one thread on this site in which Bob doesn't dominate and tell you what he thinks. Hell, I'd even settle for one thread in which he doesn't repeat his god-know-all views on every topic. It's bad enough we have to listen to this always negative dribble once. Do you have to repeat yourself numerous times? In my mind, your presence posting 26 hours a day on every single topic under the sun whether you know squat about it or not, is one of the biggest negatives of this site. Do you have any life at all, EvenBob?

It's bad enough we have to listen to this always negative dribble once.

The word is 'drivel'. Dribble is what you do with a basketball.

In my mind, your presence posting 26 hours a day on every single topic under the sun whether you know squat about it or not, is one of the biggest negatives of this site. Do you have any life at all, EvenBob?

I post in few threads, rarely before 3pm EST, and the
fact that it bothers you pleases me immensely. Keep
obsessing, its good for you.

Might I ask, if you oppose everything he says, why not simply BLOCK him ? Surely you are not trying to convert him to your point of view !

C'mon Buzz, why do you want to deprive him
of all the obvious pleasure he gets from posting
about me. Blocking would give him a big hole
to fill in his day.

While not always agreeing with Bob, I find him to be a valuable asset to the forum. Might I ask, if you oppose everything he says, why not simply BLOCK him ? Surely you are not trying to convert him to your point of view !

I think KJ was just pointing out after 20 pages of a couple of people guessing that this book was nothing more than pure drivel, and attacking the book and author on virtually every topic, that when a good review was done by a knowledgeable person on the subject matter, the rhetoric continued on, unabated. No mea culpa, nothing.
"I reject your facts, and will continue to only accept my reality." Carry on Chicken Little, but no matter how many times you say it, The Sky Is Not Falling this Time.

Given the credible review done by LG, I would be expecting a public eating of crow, but I doubt I could get a bet on this at 1:100.

I support anyone's right to call BS, but when the facts begin to point a different direction, I expect that same people to admit, perhaps they were wrong. Is that nt fair?

You are correct, Bob. I meant Drivel. My bad. I knew that didn't look right. lol

No, I won't name names. I network and communicate with a number of professional and some semi-professional or part-time, but pretty serious, players. The type of players that casino play makes up all or a good portion or strongly supplements their income. Most are not members of this site. These type of private relationships are mutually beneficial to myself and the other AP's involved. I wouldn't violate that privacy. But I can assure you that your view of immediately dismissing the work in question as totally worthless, is not representative of most of the AP community.

Given the credible review done by LG, I would be expecting a public eating of crow,

For every positive he gave about the book,
he gave a negative. I've been reading reviews
for 50 years, when that happens I don't buy
the book. When the reviewer says 'the positives
greatly outweigh the negatives', thats a good
indication of value. That didn't happen here.

I said I got something out of T Dane's interview.
Of course thats ignored, because me saying
something positive about this doesn't fit in the
template everybody has constructed about me.

This is insane. The very person who's review you are using, Lonesome Gambler, came back to post that your conclusion is not representative of what he wrote. What else do you need? It's like you won't accept HIS words, and want to re-write them with your own.

Then your comment is less than worthless. You
try and demean my comments by saying you
know all these others who got nothing but
good stuff out of the book. If you can't name
them, and point to their reviews, why say
anything at all. It makes you look so desperate
to make your point that you'll say anything,
no matter how unprovable, to make it.

Oh, right, gotcha.

Oh, priceless, very priceless. I don't have to show you any examples, why should I bother trawling through pages of articles to show you the times you've refused. You even wrote along screed once why you'd show citations.

You'll obfuscate and pretend this is high school debate league again.

I'll remember next time you refuse, then Bob.

Why would I bother to trawl through hundreds of pages to point out what I already know? Nope, I'm happy with the answer I have given.
