I've seen a team of panhandlers working the flamingo i15 on ramp. All of them with veteran signs. Also almost every offramp.

John Stossel did it on FOX.

Good piece! I always liked him. The guy who did my first bunch of Wizard videos was an intern for John Stossel.

Everyone knows they can make money but doesn't mean every brief encounter can be judged with certainty to not be in need and not legitimate. If you can say no so easily, could mean the person isn't so good begging and not the case being a secret millionaire.

I'm going way back with this one. Does anyone remember the time that Stossel got smacked around by wrestler David Schultz after calling the sport fake? That was a $425,000 pay day for John.

I didn't know that there was a settlement, but I remember the incident. Smacked him twice.

Was this the same David Schultz that won two Olympic gold medals in wrestling and then was murdered by the crazy millionaire John Dupont?

I'm getting sick and tired of being asked for money in and out of a casino. I don't know what it is but recently I've been asked to spare a dollar while I am playing more often then when I'm not. It can't be a different environment since I go to the same area every time. My compassion for helping out my fellow man is wearing very thin because all these people asking for money on the street or the overpass usually end up gambling it away so what's the point in giving them anything?

I've politely refused to give change, and now am gradually becoming more nasty in the way I refuse since EVERY one of these guys/girls have some story, but the ending is all the same, "can I have some money?"

Now I'm starting to understand the story of my grandfather's neighbor. Turns out he owned a lot of land in the area and when his wife passed his children descended upon him like a vulture and tried to go after the inheritance. He was so paranoid at that point he moved away next to my grandfather and never talked to anyone, because he assumed everyone was after his money/land. Same thing happened to my uncle's mom, the other children took the father's inheritance and left her dry.

Has any journalist ever done an experiment to see how much money he would make pretending to be a panhandler? I would hope it would go a long ways to stop people from giving to panhandlers if it were exposed that they are already making way above the minimum wage.

John Stossel of Fox News did it in New York City. He disguised himself pretty good and made some pretty good money.

The issue with panhandling is free speech. Does a person have a right to ask for money? Is the bell ringer at Walmart (around Christmas) a panhandler? Are the TV preachers panhandlers? Are the Republican and Democratic parties the two biggest panhandling organizations in the country?

I never thought of, or wanted to panhandle ever, as a scheme or anything else. Now as a kid I thought owning all those gumball machines was the way to riches and the easy life. Gumballs in, money out. Or so it seemed.

Back to the original topic....it is interesting/weird, but I have never been panhandled by a woman in Vegas , only men.
I wonder why?

I find it relatively easy to refuse panhandlers unless they are around my son's age.
A young man telling me he is hungry is almost impossible to ignore.
All I can think of is that if it were my son, I would want someone to help him.

Wrestling is obviously fake and scripted. However it's not a cake walk, you have to be athletic and take tons of abuse to your body. There's tons of skill and practice involved especially to learn how not to break someones neck or have you'res broken.

Its really just a soap opera for men and boys.

How about the guys in the white shirts on the strip with some kind of patches on them saying they work for a homeless organization asking for change in a legitimate looking can. I always figured someone is hiring them at minimum wage or less and is keeping 90% of the money as "fundraising expenses" and making a fortune off if. But then I am cynical about everything and am always looking for the angle.

The death rate among "professional" wrestlers is disturbingly high. I wonder what it would be if you factored in the Luche Libre stars south of the border?

When I was younger I had a friend of mine who went to India. He recounted that he gave a street beggar in India some money and his tour guide was aghast asking him "Why do you want to interfere with this mans Karma?" I think about that every time I see a panhandler.

All I can think of is that if it were my son, I would want someone to help him.

Would you want someone to "help" him score his next 'nickel bag' of smack?

An enterprising attorney who was quite publicly bursting with conspicuous compassion who I use to know in Portland about 25-30 years ago came up with a brilliantly creative (and successful) legal argument that those on skid road who were being housed for the winter through a program using public subsidies to get them out of the weather and off the streets for several months had an individual "property right" to the value of their housing subsidies as soon as they got a key to a room, so they could leave their housing and demand to immediately receive the full value of their housing assistance in cash. As a result, several dozen that I personally know about were dead within a couple of weeks, and probably quite a few others that I never knew of. That fellow is now on the State Supreme Court. He's quite popular with some. With the sort of folks who attach the most importance to what they intend and how they feel about what they intend. Not so much with some others more concerned with the actual results; not with me or with others who attended some of those funeral/memorial services that directly resulted from that "help."

No you would not have. In the 80's
I picked up some pro wrestlers in

ring is fake, but these guys are real
life tough guys. They like to fight,
and are very good at it. They're
huge, know they can kick your ass,
and let you know that immediately.

I didn't pee my pants, but wanted to.

Sorry to see Mickey gone for another week, but he did say he was about to hit the road again for some plays.

As for Dr. D, he lost out on some huge paydays as this happened just as Pro Wrestling was taking off and I believe Vince McMahon had him in line to headline against Hulk Hogan. His career never recovered as Vince covered his ass and fired him.

Mickey seems to have beer muscles. Is professional wrestling real? Of course not. Are many of them very strong and athletic. Yes. As proven by a few of them moving to MMA and more specifically, straight to tangle with the cream of the crop in the UFC.

I was panhandled by a woman once. On Ogden, walking towards the fabulous El Cortez about 15 years ago.
Other than that women always offer um, "services" rather than straight out panhandling.
The sleaziest encounter I have had by far was when I was walking alone north from the Queen Of Hearts to Fremont about 20 years ago and got approached by 2 relatively innocent looking boys (yes boys) about 12-13 who openly offered to Lewinsky me for $50. One of them actually laughed out loud when he saw what must have been the horrified look on my face. Found out later that the city was housing desperate families in some of the broken down joints in that area.
