This may sound awkward but it's true. I've been too Vegas about 2 months ago and I simply loved it. I live in Europe and I think about Vegas every single day and every single day I am anxious and excited too get back (I must be crazy). Now, I am planning to get back in about 2 years (!). I will book my vacation about a year in advance as I did with my last one (cheaper rates and LOTS of excitement). I'm planning on staying two weeks. I've stayed at the Gold Spike downtown but I really loved the Main Street Station where I've hit the buffet almost every morning. They've got a policy that you can only book up to seven days so I figured that I would stay at another hotel the other 7 days. But I can't decide which one. I am considering the next door California, the El Cortez, the new Plaza and last but not least the Stratosphere.
But which one is the best for comps. I am a low roller who plays penny, nickel and quarter slots (maybe dollar slots when I am in an aggressive mood), nickel en quarter VP, Blackjack, Baccarat, Roulette (did I mention that I'm European) and some craps. My average bet for Blackjack and co is probably 7-10 dollars, for roulette 5 dollars en craps with odds around 20. I know that is not much but I am planning on playing the whole day (or as long as my bankroll lasts) at least 5 days a week. In the evening I will be hopping on Fremont Street when I've still have gambling money left :-). I know that I will not get my room comped anywhere but I am expecting to get at least a discount and of course some free meals. So where is the best place to go for someone with my level play in your opinion? Any answers are much appreciated, thank you!

Have you stayed at ElC before? They rate repeat visitors differently (from what I've heard, anyway).

WHY do you say you will not get a room comp?

Yes, you are indeed a low roller but you will be in a casino that will value you. Perhaps not all that highly but they will value you. If you go to the biggies on the Strip with that kind of action you will be totally invisible to them, but at the Stratosphere playing all day at a ten dollar craps table you will be appreciated. A three hour stint at roulette will get you noticed even if you do only outside bets at table minimums. Perhaps you were jumping around too much on your prior visit. You have to do sustained stints at one particular game, perhaps.

Main Street Station is a good choice for you. You like the buffet and you like the casino. If you stay there and play there that will be good. Now we can argue about slot machines and how much you are spending versus a better rate on the higher denomination machines, but slot players do get good comps because they are so valuable to the casino.

I think your table game action will bring better comps though. Just don't flit around, do a good solid three hours or four hours at each game if you can. You know your average bet, figure out your theo and while it won't be all that impressive you still will see just how valuable you are to them.

You should be eating free. You might be a bit iffy on the room comps but MSS and The Strat should each give you a night or two comped depending on just how high your action turns out to be. Your action of Fremont Street doesn't count though.

No, I haven't stayed there before. I know they cater to low rollers and they have really nice games but I've heard of getting heat extremely easily at blackjack. Also their clientèle is not really pleasant to be around. I don't like their rooms either. But the overall atmosphere in the casino is very nice and I'm obsessed with house edges (especially the low ones), their SD BJ is like heaven for me.

More like a kindred spirit :)

I've been vacationing in Vegas the past three years. I love it!

Likewise! Look up my thread on extended stay. I found the 4 Queens Downtown does let me book for 12 days, at least. Very reasonable rates, too. The casino ranks high for VP at VPFree, offers 5X odds on craps and, like most of Downtown, welcomes low rollers.

Still, if you're staying at the Main Street Station I see two options: 1) book for 7 days, then book again for the following 7 days. You may need to meial or call to arrange it. 2) stay the rest of your trip at another Boyd property; meaning California or Fremont.

I play about at your level. I've given up looking for comps, but I do plan to spend much of my money at the 4 Queens next year.

So when are you planning on going? We've scheduled WoVCon ][ for May 12th and all are welcomed to attend.

MSS and Cal are next to each other with same ownership, so I'd rank them equally.

You've already stated a preference against EC, so I'd rank it less although the comps may be slightly higher.

Strat is not walking distance to anywhere. Unless you want to stay in one spot or spend all of your comp savings on transportation, stay downtown.

With 14 days, and the 7 day limit, I'd opt for one week at MSS and the other at The Cal.

Since I am still studying I will visit Vegas again in the summer months. I like the 4 queens, I like their selection of slots (I LOVE 3 reel slots with 5 or 9 paylines) but I am not such a fan of their selection of table games. Besides, why are the dealers of 4 queens and binions wearing this weird ugly T-shirts? I would rather prefer something classy.

And yes, I could book 2x 7 days at MSS but I think I will use the opportunity to stay somewhere else to keep my vacation fresh and new.

I would like to hear how you did at the 4 queens. Maybe you can post your experiences here.

Yeah, I considered them many times before but the location is such a drawback! I've played slots there for two hours (loosing of course). Although I like it there I wouldn't want to stay there "without ever leaving the dock". Until a few months ago at least the sahara was on walking distance nut bot anymore :'-(

But what keeps me from staying at the Cal is that I am staying basically in the same place. And though the Fremont has nice looking rooms (I like modern decor hence my aversion to the El Cortez Rooms), it has such a smoky casino.

Has anyone experiences at the Plaza. They have nice looking rooms now at affordable prices, but what about their casino and comp policies?

You can count on it. Look for my report around late May 2012.

Thus far my expereince there consists in getting a player's card and playing a little VP. I think I played a slot-like version of roulette, too, but that might have been elsewhere.

Anyway, Teddys has spoken. You should listen to him. he seems to have the ambition of visiting every casino in the world, or at least every city, town, village or whistlestop with a casino in it, and he's doing remarkably well in this hemisphere. I hear he's a question on the SATs now "Teddys is to casinos what gourmand is to ______" :)

Seriously, and the above was serious if lighthearted, I'd consider his advice on where to stay and gamble anytime.

Edited to correct a bad typo.

BTW when considering hotels, aside from Teddys advice I also read the reviews on this site, some written by the Wizard. Just click on the tab labeled "Hotels" right under the site logo. You can sort the list by reviewer, region, name, etc. The Wizard did put up a review fo 4 Queens in Nov. 09.

The reviews are well written and quite comprehensive. they nclude the usual about rooms and restaurants (at elast some restaurants), but also about the casino with types of games, limits (sometimes), payouts, etc. Even better for determining comps, many reviews say something about the casino's player card programs.

I know you didn't ask this at all, but have you considered booking a room, at least for a few nights, somewhere along the main part of the strip? You could do 10 or 11 nights in downtown, and then maybe 3-4 nights at a cheap strip property like Circus Circus, IP, Excal, Luxor, Bally's, etc. While I cannot speak to the quality of the hotels in these casinos, at least you would have easy access to the strip. It would be a shame to be in Vegas that long and not at least delve into the strip a little. And I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) many properties comp fairly generously for "low roller" slot players, even some of the nicer properties.

I think we would all highly recommend a visit to the strip but if most of his gambling is going to be Downtown then so be it. Not much use staying at IP and hotfooting it downtown for breakfast.

Visiting other casinos briefly will be fun as will wandering the strip and gawking the way tourists do. Buildings, crowds, fountains, slots, party pits, real gambling pits. I would recommend some adventurousness too because the present preference for Downtown is simply based on his first trip having been there.

However, time, energy and budget constraints are all limitations to be dealt with. He might love Tuscany but its a trek. The Strat would probably be generous towards him, but its in the middle of nowhere and he would have to do his gambling there to even hope to earn comps, so meals would be there as well. One day of exploring early in his trip would probably be rewarding for future visits and perhaps he might change his plans too.

Downtown slots are in general preferable to Strip slots and Boulder Strip slots are even better than Downtown.
The buffet at Sams Town and their 26.00 dollar internet-rate rooms is a pretty good deal. Their slots are very good, their craps game is 10x odds rather than MSS at 20x but SamsTown has the various longshot side bets that some players like. The buffet is only a bit lower than MSS, probably pretty much the same. For a slot player, Boulder Strip is a bit better than Downtown. The trouble is he knows what Downtown is like. He does not yet know what the Boulder Strip casinos are like. I'd recommend the lower house edge on the slots at SamsTown, but I wouldn't recommend taking a cab to get there from Downtown or you would have to play the slots for a week to make up the cab fare.

Just a quick mention.... Remember too, that The California, MSS and Sam'sTown are all Boyd Properties using the same B-Connected Player's Club Reward Card. And, the free shuttle bus runs from The Cal to and from Sam's Town every 45 minutes, 18 hours a day.

You're sure to earn some freebies if you spread some play at all these properties, you could even throw in some play at The Fremont for a little more variety and an additional Boyd Property.
I don't know everything but I know a lot.

I know that is not much but I am planning on playing the whole day (or as long as my bankroll lasts) at least 5 days a week.

I realize that you have asked "where" not "what", but perhaps we could also help you with the what.

Mentally I divide your play into "slot nonsense" and "real gambling" but that is simply my biases and its your vacation so what you consider to be fun is important. You happened to mention slots first and I fear that is what is probably most important to you. Also you mention the worst slot machines first: the penny slots.

So for last year, the casino win rates were:
Denomination.........BoulderStrip ............ Downtown.
Penny........................9.47........................10.97
Nickel........................4.43.........................8.75
Quarter......................2.96.........................5.12
Dollar........................3.44.........................4.65

Now these are averages and not the figures for any one casino since that data is never made public by the Gaming Board.

I'd post the figures for Table Games but those figures include the undisciplined hunch players, not just basic strategy "sharpies".

So everyone, should our low-roller friend use this data to influence where he stays/plays?
Is the data really all that persuasive? (In other words, does it really matter to a low-roller)?
Should a low-roller concentrate his play on Table Games? Or perhaps play Table Games first and slots later during his trip? Would this make any differences to his Comp Potential? Is there any way to get a property to focus more on comping him for THIS trip rather than just sending him nice mailers for future trips? Is there any way the European address might alter his probability of being sent mailers?

I know what Sams Town is like. They've got a nice atrium, but only a few table games... And it feels like the last station before the graveyard. Nothing against older people, but when 80% of patrons is at least 40 years older than me... That just doesn't feel right...

This is a good idea. My original plan was that I would be hopping on the strip once a week with my very own "strip hopping bankroll".

The Luxor would be a candidate. They've got affordable room rates and 10 dollar double deck BJ, ideal for flat betting. You see I like to play slots for say 2 - 3 hours but I still prefer table games.

I just looked on their site, yes they have good room rates for a strip casino ($605 for 7 nights), but the MSS is only $285 for 7 nights. For the 300 bucks I save for staying downtown I could ride the bus all day long (30 day pass for $65, just how I did on my last visit) and I would have $250 dollars more gambling money. After all the basic rooms at the Luxor aren't really better than at the MSS, they've only got that Egyptian theme.

I've stayed at the Strip once and the Rio another time. Both times I ahd no trouble at all getting Downtown late in the afternoon, staying there for dinner and the light show, and making my way back to the Strip, all by bus.

So you can easily do it the other way around. Stay Downtown and travel to the Strip for sight seeing. There's a lot more to see and do at the Strip anyway, gambling aside. You may wind up a bit more tired, but so what? You're on vacation and don't have to get up early.

I was going to chime in earlier, but didn't... I agree, you need to have at least one or two nights on the Strip, simply for the experience. However, Luxor won't have double-deck for $10 (personal experience from last weekend)... if they do, it will be a dreadful 6:5. Excalibur does have DD for $15 min 3:2, which may be a bit high for your budget. They pitch BJ there, which to me is more fun than when they deal the cards from the hand face-up.

I'd consider the Tropicana myself. The place got a nice face lift and they have a good promotion going on for slot players. Of course, two years down the road, a lot could change (like the may not even exist anymore), but that's true ANYWHERE on the strip.

Oh, the Black Jack Survey and the review need an update... I like the Trop, it just screams "Coconut" to me! It looks like the Mirage in the movie Vegas Vacation (I really don't like the "new" Mirage). But it is a bit too expensive for me... I think it will still be there in two years, it would not make much sense too close it down three years after a multi million dollar renovation...

$15 BJ won't be a problem for one or two sessions, although I like to vary my bet what makes a 5 dollar game ideal. I looked at Excalibur but their rooms are just plain ugly and too many kids, same is true for the Circus Circus. And the Riv just disgusts me, they seem to have nice rooms but when I came walking in I hit a smell of rotten eggs, I am telling you, rotten eggs! Thats not really a nice welcome. I think the El cortez has a nice smell. Anyway the Riv seems half empty. There was a lot of unused space...

As it seems the Trop doesn't give you the best rate. I found a rate online that was more than 200 dollars cheaper for a total of 520 dollars (for 7 days) than the rate on the Trops website! This makes it it affordable again! I think the Trop would be a great choice for staying on the strip!

The Harrahs casino is awfully crowded and more than a little bit tacky, IMO. If that doesn't bother you, though, go right ahead. I like the Flamingo casino and the buffet is pretty good, plus they ahve the fish and fowl in the gardens if you want to take a relaxing stroll. The pool looks nice, too.

I don't know the rooms. Opinions vary wildly.

I definitely would not pay $605 for 7 nights at the Luxor! I think based on what you say, just 2-3 nights on the Strip would be plenty. And with that 30-day bus pass, you could easily bus downtown if your gambling budget takes a hit, or if you're just missing the crackheads on Fremont St.

Since you have all the time in the world, it might not hurt to reserve a cheap deal on the Strip and check regularly at a few of the other Strip casinos. You never know when they may offer some crazy 48-hour sale. A lot of casinos are now advertising these types of sales on their Facebook and Twitter accounts, so you may choose to friend/follow the hotels of interest. And if it comes down to it, call the hotel(s) and see if they can make any deals. So what if they laugh at you? It only leaves you where you were before the phone call.

The hotel isn't bad, it's not great either. The location is prime as well... right in the middle of everything with a monorail stop far back on the property. The pool is legendary.

The games, frankly, are AWFUL! There are WAY too many 6:5 6 or 8 deck tables, all at a $10 min. There's maybe one pit that has 3:2 as options, and one DD game with a minimum min of $25, more likely to be $50. It's just an awful casino for gambling... those ratios are nearly identical at Harrah's, so for games, don't expect much... sorry if I burst a bubble there.

I like playing at el cortez, but I've never found them to be generous with comps. A pit boss told me that a 25 a.hand bettor will earn about $4.70 an hour in comps at elco. This is not overly generous IMHO. Hours of green chip play has never generated any free room offers for me. I think the easiest bounceback free room offers come from stratosphere, Boyd properties and plaza/Vegas club.

That's indeed really stingy of the El Cortez, especially considering the low rolling clientèle that rarely bets more than 10 dollars a hand...
The Stratosphere seems indeed good for room offers from what I've heard. Maybe I should split up my two weeks upon 3 hotels, not two. like 7 days Mss, 4 Days Strat and 3 Days Trop. That Way I can compare Boyd and Strat for comps (and for 4 days I should be doing ok staying at one place) and I experience the strip without spending a fortune (is also nice for completing your vacation).
My favorite bet: Double Down!
