I can't stand it anymore, I have to speak. I'm sorry, but craps is the most annoying game in the casino. I can't tell you how many hundreds of times I've cursed it when I was playing in the last 30 years.. At the BJ table I'm trying to concentrate, and from behind me 12 people scream at the top of their lungs. Not little children, but full grown adults. It always startles me and instantly pisses me off. I'll needlessly ask the dealer if he can get the loudmouthed jerks to shut up, and mostly they say they wish they could. I understand that craps can be exciting, but c'mon, screaming like maniacs? You didn't just win the lottery or get a pardon from the governor, knock it off already. If you only knew how extremely annoying it is to the 99.99999% of the people in the casino who aren't playing the game, maybe you would think before you scream. Thanks in advance..

That is the whole point of craps. To get adult people to scream like maniacs without having to undress first.

What is wrong is casinos not putting craps tables behind at least some partial soundproofing partitions.

You will never hear me screaming out at a craps table it's the worst thing anybody can on, all it does is call in all the Fleas, and stops any roll from happening, as the table fills up!

I some times wear ear plugs at the tables, it seems like every damn fool that ever saw a movie about Vegas, come here smoking a cigar, and screaming their heads of like fools.

They think that if you scream your head off you will win money! I see the same thing at BJ tables, you got to laugh when you see one of these fool in a sport jacket and a cigar stuck in their mouth..!

I never win at craps, I play perfect strategy (only play pass and come with odds) and I never can leave ahead! (Well once I left ahead +$5) Here is how my usual run at the table goes, I roll a number, then do the come thing and end up with 4-5 numbers working with full odds, then I seven out, none of the numbers ever hit and I leave behind more than $70 on a single roll! Ughhhhh

Here's something most people don't know. When Frank Sinatra started singing at the Paramount in NYC in 1940, his record company publicist hired a dozen young girls to scream at the top of their lungs and faint once in awhile. He hired an ambulance to sit outside the theatre and they would carry the girls out. It worked like a charm, within 6 weeks every girl in the theatre was screaming their lungs out and nobody could hear Sinatra sing. The NY critics were appalled at the screaming, it had never happened before. By the time Elvis and later the Beatles came along, screaming was a tradition. My point is, its not natural for everybody to scream. For some stupid reason, its a tradition at the craps table. It pisses off a lot of people, including casino dealers. Over the years I've had countless numbers of them tell me how much they hate it, its like working in an asylum. Its unnerving. And dumb. And completely unnecessary.

Some "lucky" shooters ask the dealers to loudly announce 7 outs, and mumble winners. A loud winner produces fleas, and there goes the neighborhood.

I've noticed the people screaming the loudest always seem to have a $5 pass line bet with minimal odds...it really isn't like they won the lotto or something. They might have won $25 bucks. Of course, they likely lost a lot more than that before they won...

Maybe its excitement due to the fact that even though its a small amount of money to a lot of people, it could mean a lot to them.

Maybe they are new to the game, and casinos in general, so are not yet jaded by the whole thing.

Or maybe, [insert deity of choice or lack of] forbid they may be in a casino and actually having a good time.

I know a lot of dealers do not like these people, but I for one do. It can be far more entertaining dealing to newbies than the hardened gamblers. Some people are just miserable.

It is only an observation I have made at my local casino over time. It doesn't bother me. If it bothers the dealers, I don't really care. The dealers are there to deal the game. I like a fun crew on the table--stiff dealers don't help their tips with me.

Its a valid observation. I was just trying to suggest some reasons why. The better the dealers, the more fun people have, the more noise there should be. Makes for a good atmosphere, in my opinion.

I agree that it's needlessly excessive.

But you'll occasionally get the same type of reaction at a BJ table, particularly a full table where nobody except the dealer busts.

In general, noise in a casino is needlessly excessive. And noise feeds into more noise.

Do slot machines need to be so loud? Do you need to hear the artificial sound of coins clinking when your cash out ticket is printing? Does that coin sound need to be piped into the sound system?

There's an area in Showboat AC by the valet pickup where you can hear the music. There's also a small vestibule area where the music has the coin clink added. Is that REALLY necessary?

Want to gamble in a quiet area? Learn to play poker. But even that has a lot of noise. Not only are there seating assignment announcements, half the poker players, when not in a hand, are fumbling / shuffling / clinking chips.

The only time that the craps noise bothered me was when I was playing poker at the Hilton AC. Their poker 'room' is just four tables at the end of a craps pit. Particularly since my other game of choice is craps, the craps noise was getting me nuts!

I hear lots of screams from the Blackjack table too when the dealer busts with a bunch of youngsters on the table. Alas, it's a 6:5 game :).

That said, craps is very much a community game. There are more players around the table. Players are 16 feet away from each other. It's a loud game. Get over it.

Those screams are really bad when they reach the poker room. I still remember the dude yelling "BUST, BUST" and a tablefull of poker players saying, "WTF?" On break the guy was still playing and yelling. I think an employee asked me if it was bothering us. I just said, "He is at a 10, we can use him at a 7." Should be joy in a casino, but when you can hear one voice and pick it up across the pit, well, that is a little over the top.

I love craps. I love the sound of it, the smell of it (and sometimes it reeks), the sight of it, the symmetry and absolute depth of color of the table (unless you are downtown where we amuse ourselves making pictures out of the various stains - and trying to guess where they came from). When I went to my very first baseball game (old Yankee Stadium) and walked out into the sunlight I thought I would never see another sight as absolutely glorious as the emerald green of that field - that was up until I saw my first craps layout.

Craps is an emotional game - I too have been known to let out a little "attaboy" when the shooter hit a yo for the second time in a row and I had parlayed a $5 bet on the yo after his first one. Who wouldn't give a little cheer or two after winning $1125 on a $5 fling? (Once I let the bet ride and the guy came back with another yo. I think I might have said something akin to "Glory" in a rather loudish tone of voice).

Blackjack - you can't win that kind of money without risking a lot more at the start. Most BJ players put down a table minimum bet and quite a few cheer when they hit it. I've seen and heard roulette players scream when their number, color, side came up.

Poker players basically are in a war and there's no cheering in war - only crying and I've seen and heard a lot of that.

You can win a lot at a slot machine but there is no social aspect to slots. Talk about grumps - nobody in the slots section gives a crap about your win or loss except your immediate family and the three guys who are trying to figure out how to scam you out of it.

On the other hand the one thing I can't stand, noise-wise in a casino, is when someone hits a big jackpot on a slot machine and it takes the floor person 20 to 30 minutes to make the hand pay. Meanwhile the bells just keep ringing, ringing, ringing. Harrah's AC is notorious for this - the craps pit is right next to a $5 slots section and it seems they are hit more often than anything else in that casino with the possible exception of the whores.

Craps has driven me crazy for just about 2 years now. Before that I merely looked at the table and shrugged. I didn't know, I moslty didn't want to know. Then I studied it a little and like some kind of 1500s Explorer I kept wanting to know more. I picked up just enough from the dealer we had at the casino nights and the Wiz's board to feel confident enough to step up and make a pass line bet. My buddy was more afraid but gave me $50 to put in play. When I came back with $90+ in 10 minutes he was amazed, though it took him another year to step up no matter how many times I told him all he had to do was pass-line and odds.

Then came taking class and REALLY learning the game. Not making it past audition 2 made it worse, learning to deal it totally efficiently has become a sort-of white whale. Take losers first, pay pass-line base to stick, pay come stick to base. No dirty money. Your brain can go crazy. Then you go to the casino and see two base-dealers doing it and they make it look so easy. You first practice cutting cheques and your hand hurts after an hour. Three weeks later I couldn't relax unless I had a handful of cheques I was cutting. My dexterity gets to the point I can size-in without even looking but I want to cheque-handle even better. I want to be as good as those old-time dealers who could pay off the line bets on a winner while giving directions to the men's room at the same time and get both right. Then I drive somewhere and try to calculate payoffs using license plates as the amount bet. And why?

Sometimes the fun comes in teaching. Last week I really got to spend time teaching one guy. Yet my advice was heavy on, "Trust what the dealers tell you when you bet wrong, they are there to help." At best people can learn 4 bets in one night, one being the field bet that anyone should understand. Yet some get that one wrong. Then there is the mystique of the language. I have taken up comparing it to floor traders on the NYSE. You only realize how well it works when new players don't use it right. We walked a fine line with this kid in showing him enough to keep him out of trouble but not so much to get him in over his head. I have yet to find a regular player who can correctly exlpain much more than half the bets on a normal board. 1/3 or so is usually what they know.

And then there is that ability to, if you want to, explain the game so no human being can understand it at all. PASS-LINE-PLACE-A-BET-HERE-WHEN-THE-PUCK-IS-OFF-AND-ROLL-IF-YOU-GET-7-OR-11-YOU-WIN-IF-YOU-GET-2-3-OR-12-YOU-LOSE-SO-AT-FIRST-SEVEN-IS-GOOD-BUT-ANY-OTHER-NUMBER-BECOMES-THE-POINT-YOU-NEED-TO-GET-THE-POINT-BEFORE-A-SEVEN-SO-THEN-A-SEVEN-IS-BAD-OR-YOU-CAN-PLAY-THE-DON'T-PEOPLE-SAY-YOU-ARE-BETTING-AGAINST-YOURSELF-BUT-YOU-ARE-NOT-YOU-ARE-BETTING-AGAINST-THE-DICE-SO-THE-DON'T-IS-OPPISITE-IF-THE-PUCK-IS-OFF-IF-YOU-GET-7-OR-11-YOU-LOSE-BUT-YOU-ONLY-WIN-ON-A-2-OR-3-A-12-IS-A-PUSH-WHICH-MEANS-NO-MONEY-CHANGES-HANDS-NOW-WHEN-THE-PUCK-IS-ON-YOU-WANT-A-SEVEN-FIRST-SO-FOR-YOU-SEVEN-IS-GOOD-BUT-MOST-PEOPLE-DON'T-PLAY-THIS-WAY-SO-DON'T-GET-EXCITED-WHEN-YOU-WIN. You getting all this? Good. Now about the come bet..............

Finally, in class we were told it used to take five years before you were no longer considered a break-in on the game. No wonder why.

I agree it's a bit more complex than necessary, but I like it. This complexity adds a perceived element of strategy to what is really just a process of rolling the dice. It sure feels less dumb than a simple "roll above the dealer, house takes 2-2 and 3-3 ties" game would be.

You got it right, most of the time the dealers start it out, when they scream out winner, at all the casinos I play at, they scream out the winners, they damn sure don't mumble they.

They want to call in all the Fleas, and as soon as the first on shows up there goes the game!
What you are saying works if you can get the dealers to work with you, the problem is most won't even when you are tipping them good.

We all see screaming at all casino games, I just want to know what some of these people are thinking, I wouldn't want anybody to know that I just won big, at anything!

Not to smart in this bad economy, you might be setting yourself up to get robbed...!
One of the worst screamer I ever heard was at a BJ table, she was screaming with every card that was flipped over it seem like, and had a voice that pierced your ears!

Winning should be done with a smile on your face and that's about it.

Cheering at a Craps Table is a custom that long out dates me. I just consider it part of the scene.
I would be surprised that a Craps dealer would not want a boisterous crowd. People when having fun tend to be looser with money and tokes.
The Casino should amplify the cheer. To a passer by it gives the impression of winning. Hey if I had a casino I would hire a dozen people to cheer every 3 minutes.
I have a bewitched egg that I use to play VP with and I have net over 900k with it.

I prefer the cheer of a hot table to the incessant pinging of the fruit machines... in some casino's it's so loud you can't talk to your friends... I normally walk out of those places. I like to feel comfortable when I sit down to play, not confused and stressed.

C'mon, Bob, really? Craps was loud before you stepped up to the table; it seems too late to complain about it now.

The noise is part of the communal fun, unique to that game. Otherwise, the background music of a casino is limited to the clanging of slot machines and the Pfoosh! of the oxygen tank supplying the next breath to those players.

It's not like it's breaking your concentration -- the decision is up to the dice. Heaven forbid people express happiness when they win.

Craps is by far the most emotional game in the casino. Blackjack is too analytical; you have to make decisions. Roulette moves too slow. No other game allows a gambler to get as much varied action, so quickly.

I am working on a thread topic about the correlation of house edge to game fun. My hypothesis is that the greater the house edge, the funner the game. Craps is the "best game" in my matrix because line + maxed odds every roll is the most fun you can have for the least amount of house edge.

I am working on a thread topic about the correlation of house edge to game fun. My hypothesis is that the greater the house edge, the funner the game. Craps is the "best game" in my matrix because line + maxed odds every roll is the most fun you can have for the least amount of house edge.

You just contradicted yourself.

If craps has the lowest edge, and is the most fun, then it DISproves your hypothesis!

Personally, I think the greater the edge, the more likely uninformed gamblers will love it.
I invented a few casino games. Info: http://www.DaveMillerGaming.com/ ————————————————————————————————————— Superstitions are silly, childish, irrational rituals, born out of fear of the unknown. But how much does it cost to knock on wood? 😁
