Was I in the wrong here?
Even if it wasn't spelled out who would cover the costs beyond the comped amount, I think common decency would be to chip in or split the amount that people consumed beyond the comped amount. This wasn't a business transaction: it's a dinner with friends. You were kind enough to invite people to enjoy a dinner with the understanding that part of it was free, but I don't think anyone could or should assume that ALL of it was free. Did no one think to ask how much the total cost was going over the comp amount?
Anyone remember the Father Guido Sarducci routine about how he had acquired the check from the Last Supper, and it showed someone ordered a drink yet they split the check 13 ways?
I mean, their "side" is that of most women. If you ask them out, then you should pay for everything because after all you asked and they're gracing you with their company. When it comes to friends, I think that's a really shitty attitude for them to take towards you, but that's just my opinion.
Oh well, no more comps will ever be spent on them, I hope.

5 of them split tax and tip.
If they had an expectation that it was totally free and are balking at paying (or can’t pay) anything…suck it up and treat them. Probably wouldn’t offer again, though.

Among Your Friends, apparently yes.
Among other groups of friends, I don't know. Maybe?
I know that when my friends were dining off my comps, I covered the gratuities, but didn't fight if they wanted to kick me a few bucks to defray their share.
I earned the comp, I used the comp to entertain my guests, I paid the tip.
I did not pay the tip if they were using my room comp and I was not staying. I checked in and tossed them the key, asked them not to surprise me with room charges.
Apparently I need more good friends like AxelWolf.

I think everyone could use a good friend like Axel. Of all the people I met in Vegas, he was by far the most helpful and friendliest.

It was a Restaurant in Miami. I had 5 Friends. The bill was $300, so the tax and tip was roughly $86. We are all still good friends. They claimed they didn't bring any money because they assumed I was paying for everything. They did pay me all of their portions.
