The Las Vegas Advisor is running their annual membership sale. You can get a three-month trial membership for $12, and that gets you the 2010 LVA coupon book. Aside from deals such as 2-for-1 buffets, rooms, and the like, there is $60 in free slot play, and a 50%-off-anything, up to $50 coupon for the Palms. Also, you are eligible for the Terrible's $100 rebate, which has an expected value of at least $34. The coupons expire Dec. 30, so this would only be a good deal if you were visiting between now and the end of the year, but if you will be in town then, it's a terrific deal.

Yeah, I saw that offer in my e-mail today.

I agree that it is a very good deal.

Use just one of the buffet coupons and you have paid for the trial membership 2 times over.

No match plays, and many coupons expire preceding the few days before the New Years Eve holiday period begins.

Are there not also shipping charges involved?

Due to coupon abuse there were NO match plays in the 2010 LVA book, and I'll wager the 2011 book will be even more anemic.

A much better deal would be the 2011 American Casino Guide, at $12.75 + $4 shipping APX which contains over $1000 in coupons, including many viable match plays and the 2011 coupons may be used as soon as you receive the book which takes only a few days.

I just ordered mine. For $25, you can get the 2010 LVA book and the 2010 American Casino Guide together. There's no shipping charge. It said you have to pick it up at their office (which appears to be behind the Mirage).
It works perfectly for us, because we'll be going in mid-December.

Actually, it's on the other side of the freeway from the Mirage, near the Rio and the Gold Coast.

I wish all you coupon-book luggers an enjoyable time. I find coupons just too annoying particularly when I'm most annoyed at myself for having left them behind. Even my weekly five or ten dollar grocery coupon is usually on the dining room table whenever I'm at the grocery store.

Expires before New Year's Eve? I'm so glad. No one wants to be futzing around with coupons on New Year's Eve and certainly no one wants to be the person in line behind someone who has some time consuming coupon.

I took a quick glance at the Terribles web site and couldn't find anything about a 100 rebate but would be interested in learning about its expected value.

Why would you be interested in its expected value if it's beneath you to use such an offer in the first place?

Us coupon-book luggers lug them heavy coupons because they're worth money. I, personally, prefer to be ahead when I start gambling. If I use a coupon for $10 slot play, I'm better off than if I start from scratch.

The Terrible's rebate is only available to Las Vegas Advisor members, so Terrible's has no reason to advertise it on their website. The expected value is (from the LVA website):

Way back in 1998, the gambling mathematician (and author of our books The Theory of Blackjack and Extra Stuff) Peter Griffin provided an excellent analysis of this proposition. The analysis showed that the expected profit for playing 25¢ video poker was $37.50.

I mistakenly quoted this earlier as $34.

Coupons may not be worth the trouble to you, but when I get a free $100 bankroll from one coupon, $50 off my dinner check from another, and $60 worth of slot play from one coupon book and $120 from another, it's worth it to me. The Terrible's rebate gives you a free shot at winning something big. Why not take advantage of it? Especially since the LVA membership only costs $12 until the end of the year.

Don't forget to log on and print out the Terrible's coupon before you go. This is a terrific deal--a $100 slot/video poker freeroll.

These penny pinchers worship at the Queen of Comps alter. She puts on some crazy show that's so full of holes you could drive a truck through it, so the weak and unsuccessful players jump through hoops just to get those dumb coupon books to save them $15 on a 3 day trip. And all the time they're looking the other way at the fact that those "free things" are only there to reel them into losing inside the casinos. The ultimate cheapskate's waste of time.

Yeah, I agree that both books are much weaker than they used to be. Two years ago my friend and I made $300-$400 each using most, if not all, of the coupons, and last year I did a solo run of all of them and made a LOT, like $700-$800. (I count the winning bets as well as the coupon value--I was lucky). There are much fewer this year. Some of them take a long time like the 2-1 blackjack payouts, but since I am going to play BJ anyway, I don't mind those. The Palms 3X points takes a long time (you can earn a maximum of 40,000 points), so I like to play multiline video poker. I plan on doing it again this year if I can get a flight out there, so I will report back how it goes.

Cheapskates win $500. Non-cheapskates lose $5000.

Hmmm..which would I rather be....

Hey, to each his own. Some 2 for 1 buffets and some matchplay coupons are a nice little bonus to me, so I like using them.
